Um, Lincoln believed in raising public revenue for the purposes of making infrastructure improvements to further economic growth... um, yeah sounds a lot like the government helping to create jobs in a public/private partnership. Which is solely the language of Democrats nowadays. So yeah I buy that.

The party of Lincoln has become the party of Lincoln's assassins.

Lincoln also called the south on their bullshiat, and freed black people, two things the modern Republicans would never do.

Well, he was a rail splitter.

And back in those days, "Rail" was a euphemism for "anus".

Wow what a ground breaking article. Not like I read that Lincoln is a Dem on the internet every day since Gore gave it to us. Yeah, it's a good point but only a hack would write solely about it.

Which is funny because in real life he joined a new third party when neither of the big two showed any interest in endangering their crooked power-sharing arrangement by even acknowledging, let alone solving the country's real-life problems.

Not to mention, the Republicans have adopted the "states' rights" arguments of the 1860's South, while Democrats have become the party of a strong federal government and a strong union -- which is exactly how Lincoln governed.

Lincoln wouldn't be a Democrat; he'd be standard-bearer for the actual progressive party that emerges after the Democrats split.

Lincoln was a Marxist!

Considering that the GOP's base now consists of the old pro-slavery, Confederate states that Lincoln fought a war with, and whose sympathizers ultimately assassinated him, I'd say it's pretty farking obvious that Lincoln wouldn't be a Republican today. The Republicans sold "The Party of Lincoln" down the river when they launched the Southern Strategy.

CSB: Harry Turtledove wrote some alternate history books in which Lincoln doesn't get assassinated after the North loses the war and ends up joining the Socialist Party after being booted out of the Republicans.

He said that he was researching Lincoln's speeches and was kind of surprised how little he had to actually change

That was prett Rovian, ED, except Rove would be slightly more subtle, not just swap the damn word and then go "No tag backs!"

The true core of the two party system in America goes back to the Federalist "liberal" strong federal government-antislavery John Adams and the Democratic "conservative" states-rights, slaveowning Thomas Jefferson. By Lincoln's day it was the Republican "liberal" pro-union, anti-spread of slavery/anti-slavery vs the pro-slavery/states rights Democrats. By the time of FDR, the Democrats were strong-federal government types. (New Deal, TVA, Social Security) with the Republicans preaching about private charities and being bootstappy. The Truman/Eisenhower/Kennedy days were more blurred, with the Dixiecrat branch existing. By the 64 election. It was the pro-civil rights "liberal compared to the others" LBJ carrying most of the country with the more conservative Republican Goldwater taking the south. The less racist/pro strong government (Democrats now) vs more racist/pro states rights (Republicans now) is the real measuring stick historically.

So yeah, Lincoln was the "librul" of his day. Republicans used to be the liberals. Not a hard thing to wrap a head around I thought.

It's not, but the Repubs try to play both sides of it, taking credit for Lincoln while playing to the very bigots Lincoln was opposed to. Hint: If you see a rightist refer to the Republicans as the "party of Lincoln", you can write them off as a disingenuous fark.

I don't think the Democrats would want him:

"I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And in as much as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything. I do not understand that because I do not want a negro woman for a slave I must necessarily want her for a wife. My understanding is that I can just let her alone." -- Abraham Lincoln, during debate in Charleston, IL, Sept 18, 1858

2012-11-15 03:46:41 PM
What today's Republicans manage to completely overlook is that their party was a progressive party back in those days -- i.e. lefties! -- right up to Teddy Roosevelt, who managed to divide the party when he tried to rerun for a third term in office. The progressives followed TR, who lost his re-election bid, and the party morphed into a more conservative group. However, even they were still progressive when compared to the whackjobs running the show today.
