That's sort of the point that I came here to make. A lot of the people who I know who are psychologically dependent on marijuana would just turn to something else to self-medicate themselves. I bet alcohol would be their next choice.

I can assure you there is at least one pot-smoker who self-medicates with alcohol when pot isn't available. Otherwise, hardly ever drink.

It is a gateway drug. People move up from there drugs on schedule.....uhm,....negative infinity.

I smoke weed every day because I was an angry mother farker and it wasn't very fun being angry at everything all the time (not like physically violent angry, just incredibly frustrated and shouty). Weed came along and I mellowed out a ton. Even though I smoke everyday, if I can't for some reason it's not a huge deal. The only withdrawal effects I notice are a decrease in my appetite (the horror, the horror!) and I'm slightly more irritable. That's it. I've been smoking multiple times a day, every day (with a few breaks here and there) for around 7 years. My memory is still as sharp as ever, and I could be high as a kite and you would never be able to tell as long as I had eye drops. I know so many daily smokers, none have ever even thought about going to rehab. We're all employed, motivated people who just happen to like smoking weed. Everyone in rehab for marijuana addiction is there because it was court mandated, no one needs rehab for weed. I've helped opiate addicts in withdrawal, that enables me to laugh at anyone who even remotely suggests that weed is somehow horribly physically addictive.

/tl; dr: pots not addictive and anyone who says that it is, is a blindingly moronic buffoon.

The reasonable definition of addiction is: "If it causes problems in your life but you cannot stop or moderate without physical or emotional pain you is an addict".

MJ is really not one of the easy things to get addicted to and I really don't see many new users starting if they weren't going to already so no new spike in MJ addicts on the horizon but lets be honest with ourselves, if people can be addicted to Texas Hold 'Em they can be addicted to MJ.

I'm a lazy sonofabiatch. I hate doing stuff that's not fun. I have smoked weed regularly for a span of time and then laid off for years. I remain a lazy sonofabiatch regardless of how high I am. Actually, I have more motivation to do manual labor and repetitive tasks when I'm high.

Cannabis is not like other drugs. It isn't really beholden to the Puritan Ideal that anything that feels good must be bad. Some things that feel good are good.

We can make some inferences, though it's hard to adjust for culture, availability, etc., but you can't get more available and socially acceptable than the Netherlands.

Either they aren't drinking at all or they are all in, drinking from morning till night, they may function OK sometimes but it's never at their potential. I know that you were trying to be funny but there are too many people who are trying to say "It's just your weak will" to let this go. Addiction is a real problem for some people, A tiny percentage of people who ever try a drug will become addicted to it, maybe 10% or less for the most common (alcohol) but for those that do help is the better and cheaper option than incarceration.
