namatad: Holocaust Agnostic: No state has any particular right to exist, they either do or they don't according to the actions of their supporters and detractors.

Existence is.
The "right" is irrelevant.

Israel exists. End of story.
It is the same story for every other country in the world.
The US exists. Did it have the right to kill all the natives and take all the land?
Who cares, it happened, it is over, and millions of people live here now bathing in the spoils of those wars.

WARS are all about land grabs. (yes, I know, there are other kinds of wars, but for this argument, we are talking about the traditional wars used to build countries)

HELL, the US exists because we illegally went to war with england and stole their rightful land.
Every side in a war justifies their actions. Some of those justifications are less lame than others.

...OK?

The question I was answering was "should the Jews have a state?". The answer in no. No group should or shouldn't have a state.

If you were to ask specifically do I think that the actually existing state of Israel should remain a Jewish state, that would also be "no". But that's a practical matter. It is demographically implausible. The Jews in Israel are being to badly outbred. Remaining a Jewish state eventually means actively disenfranchising or purging Muslims. And that's bad juju.

Okay Gaza is under military siege and has been for years.

Uncle Tractor: BgJonson79: That's what I mean about the history of it all. Waaaayyyy back in college I took a course on the Arab-Israeli conflict and learned a ton about the history of it all. Jordan and Palestine were one big group of people and one sorta province of the Ottoman Empire, until they lost WWI and the British got the Mandate of Palestine and they broke it up into differing states. Jordan was called Trans-jordan, IE, the other side of the Jordan (al-Urdun) River. Same ethnic group, other side of the river.

You missed my point. The palestinians who lived west of the Jordan ... lived west of the Jordan. Creating a palestinian homeland somewhere else would do them no good. Some people don't mind picking up and moving at the drop of a hat (or at the whim of some government), but if your family has lived in the place for centuries, you might not be so keen on leaving. Particularly when it's somebody else telling to move.

Lived, but didn't own.

Yeah, but if Mexican drug lords were randomly shooting crap rockets into the southern U.S., and my home were near their range... Yes I would absolutely request either the freedom to shoot across the border at them, or military response. I think anyone would.

They're crappy rockets, sure enough, but it's not like you'd continue bar-b-cuing and drinking your beer if they started landing near you.

2012-11-15 02:24:45 PM

Nadie_AZ: Ok, so Hamas fired eleventy billion rockets at Israel.

I'm curious about the rockets.

We know the Gaza Strip isn't big. 25 miles long, 6 miles wide, borders the Mediterrenean on the northwest, Israel on the northeast, southeast and shares a small border with Egypt on the southwest.

What sort of rockets are they using?

The Qassam rocket.

[upload.wikimedia.org image 300x197]

Their range?

[upload.wikimedia.org image 351x585]

Their cost? $800 per rocket (according to wiki).

These things suck. I mean they fail all the time, apparently. And from this image, they look like metal bottle rockets.

[upload.wikimedia.org image 666x599]

Hamas should spend more time building infrastructure with that money. At the same time, Isreal relies on scaring the absolute sh*t out of Americans with the 'oh they are launching a jillion rockets at us' as if they were ICBMs or Patriot missiles.

Aren't they still using surplus Katyusha rockets too?

2012-11-15 02:24:57 PM
OK, everybody back to their corners. Hamas, you agree to acknowledge Israel's existence and stop bombing them. Israel, you acknowledge you took their land by force simply because you wanted it, pay Palestinians a yearly tax for the land, remove all settlements that are disputed. Deal?

So you would be fine if someone would start shooting at you with a.22 as long as they dont actually hit you... about 50 times a day... Wow, you are retarded.

My point isn't to say that they should or shouldn't defend themselves. Of course you defend yourself. I completely see the political advantage Israel has in claiming any damn bottle rocket is a weapon being launched at them is, in fact, a massive barrage of missiles.

And that is it. Interesting to see how small that area of the world is and how big it is presented 'over here'.

So what do you call 130 rockets if not a barrage?

Amos Quito: Lehk: With claims that Palestinian militants fired nearly 150 rockets on Thursday, killing three people, defence officials said Israel was prepared to launch a ground invasion into Gaza if necessary.

So far, at least 15 people, including Mr Jaabari, have been killed in more than 50 Israeli airstrikes - codenamed Operation Pillar Of Defence. Two young children were also among the dead.

Izzy has not reached their ordinary quota of 1 Israeli worth 10 'rabs one being a child yet, they will continue airstrikes until at least 1 more child and 14 adults are killed

Spot on.

2012-11-15 02:32:18 PM
Most of the rockets being fired are the older Katusha rockets. They have a 30lb bomb in them and would blow-up a room in a house or a single vehicle pretty easily. They only occasionally kill people because a victim has to be within about 10-15' to likely get a lethal chunk of the blast.

Now the new Grads have triple the payload and almost triple the range. They have about the same warhead as a 155mm artillery shell. If one hits your house directly, it would blow out a side and kill/injure everyone inside. A hundred pounds of explosives will do that.

So the rocket threat is unlikely to do massive damage, but the V1s and V2s didn't do that much real damage either. They are a weapon of terror against a civilian populace, not a military weapon since they are effectively unguided.

BgJonson79: Shouldn't the Jews be able to have their own state?

The Israelis can do whatever they want to. I just don't think the job of the United States to ensure that their borders are protected. We've spent trillions of dollars and thousands of lives trying to stabilize that region, and as far as I can tell it hasn't done a damn bit of good. We need to cut our losses and let the chips fall where they may. I'm done squandering our blood and treasure trying to fix all the problems in the world when we have so many things that need our attention right here at home. We tried, it didn't work, and to keep trying to fix their problems is insanity.

That's actually a complete myth. There were never Jewish slaves in Egypt..

Only one party will benefit from this. So, let's center all of our news reports around their claims about rocket attacks and casualties. If rocket attacks didn't exist, it would be necessary for Benji the Butcher to invent them.

The Zionist has a history of killing even its own people in furtherance of politcal goals or more land.

I've been more curious about the ever continuing powerplay in the territories. And have been wondering how much of this is still due to the fight between Hamas and the PLO. Since Hamas boycotted the elections in October and the PLO didn't have a strong showing it seems like neither side really got an advantage so the stalemate continues. Link

Also it seems like Hamas has been having trouble keeping the other militant groups under control. Link

"A major Israeli attack on Gaza would not curb growing extremism in the Palestinian enclave, with the ruling Islamist group Hamas itself struggling to quell radicalism, a senior Israeli official said on Wednesday."

"Most of the activity is coming now not from Hamas," he said, adding that Islamic Jihad was receiving a relatively bigger share of the weapons that had "been pouring into Gaza".

And the Islamic Jihad is now claiming responsibility for the rocket attacks today. Link

The Quds Brigades hit the occupied city of Tel Rabea (Tel Aviv) with a Fajr 5 rocket causing a large explosion to shake the city," the group said in a brief statement, shortly after an AFP correspondent reported seeing a rocket land in the water south of the sprawling coastal city.

"What comes next will be greater," the statement added.
