(Yahoo)   Listen, I know it's been a hard couple of months for us NHL fans, but allow me to offer a bit of good news in this sea of gloom and doom: Don Cherry was attacked by a swarm of angry bees yesterday   (sports.yahoo.com) divider line 75

I once replied to the Canadian border guy on why I was entering Canada - "I want to buy a suit and look like Don Cherry!"

Half hour later, I was free to go...

vudukungfu: Elzar: The guy played one game in the NHL - one game and the rest of his 20+ year career he spent in the minors... oh and he is a loud-mouth buffoon and national treasure of Canada.

SO he's like Madden?

Cherry was also an NHL Coach....and not just ANY coach. He was Bobby friggin' ORR's coach. He led the Bruins to 2 Cup finals, and had a 231-105-64 record in Boston. Say what you want, the man knows the game.

He's loud-mouthed, abbrasive and unabashedly supports developing Candian talent at the expense of "imports". He's one of the biggest spokespeople for player safety (every Canadian remembers him bashing poor Ron on the head with the shoulder pad to prove that they were becoming more like weapons than protective gear). He's also firecely insistent on honourable play - such as calling out "enforcers" who won't remove their visor in a fight, thus risking additional injury to their opponent.

When he goes on tirades or says stupid things about foreign players, it's easy to see why some people can't stand him...but that's also exactly what makes the rest of us love him.

srhp29: Maybe the NHL fans could get together and play a pick up game. Yeah, you would have to skate 4 on 4 due to lack of players, but that would open up the ice more.

I'm actually playing tomorrow night (5 on 5, but damn I hope we don't have a short bench again), though I don't know if I still qualify as an NHL fan anymore, since I canceled my season tickets and am now rather "meh" about the whole league.

Wow! 10/10, liter +1000, etc. etc. That is some next level trolling. Hats off.

ordinarysteve: Fark Don Cherry, the fact he was voted one of the greatest Canadians is a national embarrassment

Not only was Cherry voted one of the Greatest Canadians, but he was endorsed by Bret Hart.

That's pure Canadiana right there.

Except Madden has the highest win percentage of any coach in NFL history.

brantgoose: You know who riffs well off of Don Cherry? Fellow Traditional Pride Day Flag, Craig Thompson.

Speaking of gays, Here's Cherry besieged by KITH alumni Scott Thompson. It's not that Cherry hates gays, he's just not comfortable around them (he's from that oldskool you know? ...different values).

Grapes is awesome. Met him in person, very gracious to fans. Love his Rock 'em Sock 'em vids.

Me and the wife went to the 3rd to the last game played in Maple Leaf Gardens. The game was vs Boston. Bobby Orr (Grapes' adopted son) was there. Got the game program signed by him plus the book he wrote about their sons' battles.

He's great, except for drinking the kool-aid regarding this outfits.

TheBeastOfYuccaFlats: There are not enough words to express the joy I feel every time someone complains that a major league season has been canceled.

Not because I don't necessarily enjoy watching said sport, but, rather, because the butt-hurt that sports fans who think this stuff actually matters fills my schadenfreude implant to overflowing.

I mean, why single out sports? There are lots of things that "don't matter". Movies, music, alcohol, art and art museums, 99% of television, sports cars, video games, and most books, novels, and magazines, to name just a handful.

All of those things exist solely for our entertainment and enjoyment, and don't directly serve any practical purpose. I'd wager you're enthusiastic about plenty of frivolous and unnecessary things; singling out sports fans seems rather asshat-ish. IMO, entertainment itself is important.

SpaceButler: Let's just make our own season! Use NHL '13 to simulate the cancelled games, streamed live online with hockey nerds providing commentary. Cherry can put obnoxious backgrounds on his Twitter account and exchange tweets with Ron MacLean between periods.

Only if we still get to kill Gary.

keylock71: Lol... Don's the man. Never fails to crack me up.

Been following the AHL closer this season than in the past...

I kind of feel like normal even more so than if the NHL season was a go, because I'm rooting for a Bruins team that's in last place and can't keep a lead to save their lives. : )

I'm pretty sure the Caps gotcha beat on choking.

Go Caps!
:'( please?

Rev.K: I like Don Cherry. I don't agree with everything he says, but he's genuine and truly cares about the game of hockey.

I will truly be sad when the day comes that he is no longer with us.

Remember when IOC asswipe Dick Pound went on record saying that he wouldn't be surprised if 50% of NHL players were doping and he said this with no evidence to back it up?

It was Don Cherry who brought him on national television on Coach's Corner to be held to account for those words because Cherry was so offended that Dick Pound would slag 50% of NHL players with no proof.

That's what a stand up guy does.

/Cherry, not Pound

What do you expect from a dude named Dick Pound? I mean, really.

And no-touch icing, rubber strips on the dasherboards, neckguards for youth hockey and a whole laundry list of other things. He likes good tough hockey, but he hates seeing players get hurt.

GQueue: Shazam999: Were they European bees

Don says you can tell they weren't because they attacked him, and European bees are wimps. These were good, tough Canadian bees.

Don Cherry has also said the single greatest game of minor-league hockey he ever saw was during the first season of the Montana Hockey League (now a part of the AHL).

"Ever penalty was met with boos, and at the end of the game, both sides had black eyes, sore legs and smiles broad as the Big Sky. Hockey in America will survive."

Seems like we're the only inland state that gives a damn about the game, in its entire, but we feel the same way about football and baseball. Three failed basketball teams, I'll leave it at that.
