In most cases I am all about artists getting more money for who utilize their works, but the compulsory license disparity between terrestrial radio, satellite radio and Internet streaming is ridiculous. The only reason satellite and Internet broadcasters pay more right now is that they had less millions to pay lobbyists last time around.

theorellior: Coldplay, however, is sitting back smug and happy.

I swear, you start a new channel on Pandora and you'll get a Coldplay song within a dozen selections. The only channels this didn't happen for me were my Beethoven channel and my James Brown channel. Other channels--bang, Coldplay. Seeds as diverse as Ozric Tentacles, Sleater Kinney, Fatboy Slim and Missing Persons.

Coldplay farking sucks.

I have the problem with Jack Johnson. I'm liberal with my "I'm tired of this track" with his sings. I wish Pandora had a "This artist bugs me for no rational reason, block him from my account".

reverend maynard: I've never understood the appeal of Billy Joel. I'm not a fan of Bruce Springsteen, or even Celine Dion for that matter, but I understand their appeal at least. Billy Joel is one big enigma to me.

the holy trinity of suck in the rock pantheon: The Eagles, CCR, and Billy Joel.

Interesting that the article fails to spell out the different rates assessed to various forms of digital radio.

Satellite radio pays about 7.5% of revenue in royalties
Cable company music channels pay about 15% of revenue in royalties
Pandora pays more than 50% of revenue in royalties

They're not suing Pandora. They're speaking out against a bill that Pandora is lobbying for that would cut the revenues they earn from online broadcasting (Pandora already pays them, they just want to pay them less)

I'll just be over here, continuing to download music for free directly from Youtube...
