Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré led Task Force Katrina in the aftermath of the hurricane that struck the Gulf Coast in 2005.

Yes, tell us how to run a disaster recovery response.

He's the one who got the job of cleaning up the mess left behind by Katrina, Brownie and four decades worth of local incompetence and corruption...were you expecting to trust maybe Ray Nagin's judgment instead? Brownie's? Oprah's?

I'm not sure I see any real criticism of the federal response in there; it seems to be questioning why New York isn't letting the federal government help more.

2012-11-15 11:23:52 AM
His comments are aimed at NY's response more than NJ or the Fed. One does wonder why Cuomo hasn't called for more NY NG troops when people still don't have food/water/power at their community.

I'd trade 10 four stars for one of this guy.

my experience with living in NY is that it is a money grubbing shiathole that does as little as possible for the citizenry.

Maybe Subby's stuck on stupid?

And maybe, just maybe the response isn't as big as the one for Katrina because NY and NJ got hammered, but not on the scale of Katrina.

I am forced to conclude; Obama hates white people.

FEMA typically gets high ratings for their handling of a disaster right after it happens. As the recovery goes on, opinions tend to sour.

well look at the area that the hurricane hit, and there you go.

Where is the command center? D.C.
Who is in charge? POTUS
Where is the National Guard? Recovering from shooting students at Kent State.

I remember first hearing about this guy during Katrina. Ordering troops to lower weapons aimed at civilians because they were "on a rescue mission, damnit!" It's good to see he's still a John Wayne dude who gets stuff done.

/salute.

yeah, the liberal media conspiracy... you should only trust right wing news, look how accurate they were with the election results. they never lie.

If you look at FoxNews's polls before the election, they always reported a very close race. Besides, we all knew that it was about turnout. Republicans didn't get their supporters out there to vote. That's about it. I think the disconnect was looking at polls based on 2008 turnouts and wondering, "Will the Democrats be able to repeat that turnout?" They didn't quite do it, but Republicans failed to get close to their 2008 turnout also. Some just didn't believe there would be anywhere near the Dem turnout in 2008 and looked to previous elections for some balance.

Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré sounds racist

2012-11-15 12:16:17 PM
I don't think he's properly taking in to account the differences between New Orleans and NYC. For all its faults, NYC has a much better functioning state apparatus than New Orleans had. More National Guard troops might possibly not help as much in NYC.

I actually let my company know I was happy to volunteer to go up and help our office clean up/recover. They told me know, they have plenty of manpower already. In fact, some of our associates were spending a lot of time in the office because they didn't have power yet restored at home.

I tend to think the Lt. Gen. learned a thing or two about disaster response from Katrina. His opinions are grounded in experience, so I'll take his word for it.

Another case of Democratic selective outrage:

www.global-air.com

Before internet and satellite tv coverage, there was the 1995 Chicago Heat Wave. 739 poor, and mainly black, people died, while President Clinton vacationed. (new window)

The New York Guard can't deploy outside of the state. You might be thinking of the New York National Guard.

WTF is the New York Guard?

chetbango: WTF is the New York Guard?

It's the purely state organized militia force that "fills in the gap" for the New York National Guard if it gets deployed. The New York Guard, however, can't be federalized, and thus can't be deployed outside of the state without the express consent of the governor, so it's always available for in-state use.

From a Floridian who's been through quite a few major hurricanes:

Hey NE US! This is what a hurricane is like. This is what Floridians go through every few years and somehow still manage to live. We've even managed to stop biatching about power being out and have learned to enjoy our extended time off from work.

/ProTip: Find a good coastal community (w/adequate preparations) which has a strong fishing community. Hurricanes mean some of best parties you'd ever seen. The fisherman have giant diesel-powered ice machines, the bars have kegs, and the restaurants have walk-in freezers/fridges full of food that needs to be eaten.

one thing to remember, New Yorkers and northeasterners in general aren't floundering retards without resources. This has less to do with being black or orange and more to do with the geography. In NOLA, the less you move the better because it's a steambath, in the NE, you freeze to death half the year. Plus, the NE is less about "family" and more about "community." You don't have to actually KNOW the guy you are helping out in order to help out, you just realize that theere is someone who had a dune move into their living room, see that you aren't doing anything more important and pick up a shovel.

There are going to be lots of disruptions, but by the summer, Jersey and New York will be back to being themselves while New Orleans will still have people living in rotting FEMA trailers.

Those of us on the west coast have known that the media only concerns itself with events on the east coast for quite some time. I guess we now understand that they really only concern themselves with a few blocks of Manhattan.

I'm curious if you've ever spent any time here. Because I wonder where you got such a dissonant sociology of the area.

I guess Sandy was larger in area. But wasn't Sandy a category 1?

And the reason they called it a "super storm" was because it was not quite a hurricane?

Just checked damage

Katrina: 1,899 deaths $100B damage
Sandy: 200 deaths $50B damage
