Was there more than one this year?

2012-11-15 09:08:09 AM
That was wretched keeping and defending by England. Three defenders around the keeper and he parried the ball right to Ibrahimovic.

Ridiculous.

That was quite the goal.

But in goal of the year consideration, I'd like to see Luis Suarez's mid-field long bomb against Norwich make the list.

If you're brittish, here's all four of Zlatan's from last night.

More importantly, there's a video of all of the goals up for the Puskas award this year.

There are some ridiculous volleys in the compilation, Falcao, Stoch, Hassli, even an outside the box overhead backheel from some Bolivian guy.

Neymar will win.

I chose Neymar because that was all skill. A lot of those were fluke shots that are tried a million times, and those were the few times that the ball went in, but Neymar's dribble was no fluke, that was Giggsy a la FA Cup Semi Final '99 esque.

That's what you call a feather in the hat trick.

Brilliant Tonnage. Seems Joe Hart has been on the end of some spectacular goals.

2012-11-15 10:32:53 AM
More like goal of the century. The fact that he knew to stop running forward, back up, get the height he did and that the ball dropped right in front of the crossbar making it unsaveable all added to making it one of the best goals ever. Incredible.

Papa Demba Cisse's goal is still the GOTY IMHO.

As mush as I love that one, the close control goal he scored against Newcastle a few weeks ago was better.

Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that it's too late to enter it in this year's Puskas Award voting.

Here's an idea: don't start voting on that until the year is over, morans.

Joe Hart is playing without a lot of confidence at the moment and is making some bad decisions. Still that was a stunning goal. Just incredible

The one against Chelsea? Yeah, that one was crazy. So many great goals are helped along by bad defending or keeping--Demba Cisse's goal couldn't have been stopped by anybody. Petr Cech is one of the best in the business and he couldn't stop it. The ghost of Lev Yashin couldn't have stopped it.

Seriously. Between that and Robert Green's horrible keeping against the US in the World Cup... England has some serious keeper issues.

That won't help Zlatan's ego at all.

Alexi Lalas' mustache. What the hell. Link

What makes that a GOTY is that no one expects anybody to hit a shot from that angle with that much swerve, bend and accuracy.

The beauty of that goal is that the initial line of the shot is at least ten feet outside the posts. The confidence in his own technique and his ability to curve the shot is incredible.

Also, I like the way that video starts with the slo-mo replay. Really captures the "hang on, WTF did I just see? That can't have just happened" vibe of the moment.

"Zlatan-style"

As good as all those goals are, I'm a little disappointed Darren Mattocks' header vs. Toronto FC isn't included. How far he goes up to head that ball is awe inspriring.

I'd vote for Ben Arfa's dancing through the defense, but they're all damn fine.

I would agree with Ben Arfa's moves but there's something about that Hassli strike that makes this former keeper flinch badly.

What does it for me is I've never seen it. Meaning we've guys waltz through the defense from midfield. We've seen players catch a volley from 30 yards straight out. I have never seen anyone do that. Cech could not have saved it with a rake.

An oldie but my favorite soccer of all time scored this amazing goal waaay back in the 80s and I was a fan for life. Poor guy had to retire due to an unfortunate nagging ankle injury. Marco Van frickin Basten summersault kick.
