Also a potential cause of head injury for soccer players: driving your head into the chest of Marco Materazzi.

Wow... Thats news.

We had a ban on heading the ball back in 1984 because of the same reason.

I wanna get paid to read old studies and come to the same conclusions.

If it was in the face instead we could have signed Zidane for Scotland.

Ah, the moment soccer almost became a real sport in the eyes of Americans...

Soccer players should wear helmets, shoulder pads, eye make-up and tampons like other football codes. And stop kicking the ball.

Sports are dangerous. We should settle all athletic matters like gentlemen... on the Xbox.

So repetitive concussive injury caused by rapid coup-contracoup movement of the brain is bad? And accumulates into major neurological disability later in life as each injury occurs ontop of the other?

Wow. This is so 1990.

This was shocking news... in 1980.

Like, oh my God subby - stop being so yesterday...

No, it wasn't really. I was there.

It was new, sure, but shocking? No. Your skull is a remarkably strong structure, all things considered. What's contained inside it? Well, even that is pretty amazingly resilient and can surprise you with it's ability to recover from extreme trauma... sometimes.

The key word is "sometimes".

You're still rolling the dice. Roll it enough times and you're bound to see more than a few results you don't like. Just ask Muhammad Ali.

I've seen a few players, not Cech, wear small, soft helmets around their heads. Not sure if this is for head-to-head or also heading, but it's probably something that should be required.. especially for head-to-head.

The ball's gotten way lighter than it was even 20 years ago. Cech has had to use that soft helmet b/c of a collision with a Reading player about 4 or 5 years ago where he suffered a cracked/broken skull.

Like I said, I wasn't talking about Cech. I believe a non-keeper from the Union wears something.

Yeah, headers have always been dangerous just like 50-50 balls. Like a receiver going across the middle of the field, it's the perfect time for a defender to take a cheap shot. Because of this, most coaches I had advised you to keep your elbows out when going up for a header. Yes, I know this article is referring to the actual act of heading the ball, but the other stuff going on at the time is much more dangerous.

As someone who plays in a few competitive adult league, it's shocking the amount of players who don't know how to legally be physical with someone and the amount of refs who don't give a shiat when someone goes in cleats up a second or two after you've released it.

What I think this study is saying, as well as others regarding US football, is the hard blows aren't really more dangerous. In fact, the repetitive softer blows is the real danger.

That's right. Football players are pussies for getting hurt when hit by fast moving 250+ lb mountains of muscle. Getting hurt by the ball or by tripping on a blade of grass just makes you a badass. You Euros are simply studs. We are all in awe of your manliness.
