Makes sense to me, all my white trash relatives got was an Obama Phone and that was enough to make them vote for the Big O.

"You can imagine for somebody making $25,000 or $30,000 or $35,000 a year, being told you're now going to get free healthcare, particularly if you don't have it, getting free healthcare worth, what, $10,000 per family, in perpetuity. I mean, this is huge," Romney said, the New York Times reported.

I can imagine somebody making $25,000 or $30,000 or $35,000 a year, being told they don't matter and they refuse to take any sort of responsibility for their lives, and finding those statement repugnant so they decided to not vote for the guy who said those things.

I know. Republicans could have TOTALLY gotten in on that healthcare mojo but NOOOOOoooo...becuase then Obama would take the credit and he's blah so we can't have THAT. Better to just tell people their miserable wretches who don't deserve nice things like a prescription drug plan. That's much better.

Nobody contributes nothing. Those who don't pay federal income tax certainly do pay other taxes.

Plus - as someone who pays taxes (I'm currently in the 28% federal tax bracket), I certainly don't begrudge helping pay for healthcare for someone who is trying to raise a family on a fourth of my income. They need all the help they can get. I don't envy them at all, even if they do have a lower tax rate.

Aren't we past this Derp? I seem to recall we had an election a week or so ago, and that one party did pretty damn well for itself? That party holds the Presidency and gained seats the Senate, which they also control? Yeah.

Time for the Republicans to sit down at the table and stop whining. They spent the last four years doing everything they could to stop Obama from getting re-elected, while ignoring the problems that face this nation. Grow up, get to the table, and start doing the job we voters elected you to do!

And as for those who are upset cause your party lost, you need to grow up, too. Get over it, stop whining about blaming others. Your guy was a horrible candidate, who thought insulting half the country was a good strategy for winning an election. Seriously?

The best part of this election was watching self-entitled whining conservatives get smoked out in the open. Usually they're better at hiding their true nature.

I wish Obama really were going to enact real tax reform; return to the 70% bracket for asshats like Mitt, AND change the tax code to hit his dividend income.

These "screw you I got mine" guys have had a free ride living in this country for far too long.

Heh... He still doesn't get it.

Romney showed the American people what he thought of them when he called 47% of them takers.

The GOP and its flunkies seem to be operating under the delusion that only Republicans work hard and everyone else is a "taker"... Just look at some of the ridiculous things that were said the other day at the Republican Governors conference.

Now that the election is over and Romney's ideas have been soundly rejected he's not even trying to hide his contempt for the poor and middle classes.

He was an entitled, smug asshole when he was Governor here in the Commonwealth and he's still an entitled, smug asshole... But now we can add loser to that.

fark you, Mitt.

"I'm free to drop the mask now. Let them see the real Mitt," seems to be the gist.

Uh, Mitt? We already did. You already made this stuff perfectly clear in the 47% tape. But hell, it was clear before that.

This is the first time you've hit the news since your loss, and it's excuse-mongering that repeats the vile shiat you repudiated only a few weeks ago.

These people literally do not believe in "society". They think that human civilization is just a random aggregation of seperate and disparate individuals, and that they themselves exist above and apart from it. They honestly believe that if you dumped them and a bunch of other, like-minded sociopaths on an island somewhere, they'd build New York city - with no outside help.
You can't argue with a mental illness.

I like how we've moved the goalposts so that useless leeches now include people who work full time jobs that pay low wages.

Apparently, the people scrubbing the toilets of the upper class contribute nothing to society, and do not deserve medical care. They should have thought of that before they chose toilet cleaning over law school, I guess.

Basically, the next four years will be consumed by the GOP trying to remake our elections so only the corpse of Ronald Reagan gets to vote.

Just for a reality check, I'm not even going to address the basic lie that the President "gave free stuff" to minorities. Here is a short, incomplete list of free stuff Romney promised.

Free stuff for young people: Increase spending on pell grants/student loans.
Free heathcare via the emergency room.
Free stuff for seniors: Increase spending on Medicare (because Obamacare cut it!).
Free stuff for military contractors because of increase spending on the Military.
Free stuff for the 1%: Reduced taxes
Free stuff for corporations: Reduce taxes.
Free stuff for oil companies: remove 'expensive' regulations/government fees.

Etc....

That's the thing that kills me about the whining coming from some of the wealthier citizens in this country...

I've never been anything other than lower-middle class, same as my parents and grandparents. I'll happily pay higher taxes if it means my income is pushing me into those higher brackets.

I'd love to see some of these rugged captains of industry and "job creators" make do on what the wife and I live on...

Romney is the type of asshole that makes you understand why dragging people like him out of their homes and loping their heads off in a public square seemed like a good idea at certain times throughout history.

Obama is "divisive" because the right refused to work with him since day 1 of his presidency, and reaffirmed their ambitions in 2010 when they thought their momentum would carry through to today. Because he didn't cave into their every demand, it must mean that he's polarized Washington even more.

Fortunately, their constant blocking of progress was seen for what it was.

There's no grey to them, only black and white. Or I guess red and blue.

The GOP is as wrong about the reasons they lost as they are arrogant and insulting.

They can't even pretend to give a shiat about anything but the interests of rich white christians, and at the same time absolutely shiat on whole segments of voters. What do they do when this costs them an election?

They attack the very voting blocks that they will need in the next election.
Fellas...it's not them, it's you.

jso2897: mscleo: Really?

Pathological delusion?

People who work and not just the welfare queens are now the enemy?

And the conservatives call Obama arrogant.

They want to divide the country into the "productive" and "nonproductive", along utterly arbitrary and meaningless lines. But Obama is "divisive".

Romney and frankly the GOP divides everything. Their basic understanding of the world demands that they have an enemy. While Romney was calling the President "divisive" he would literally divide the country up into "good" and "bad" in the same speech!

For instance this is a short list of places or people Romney used as examples of the 'enemy':

Chicago
California
Washington
47% of the American people
Hollywood

These are the only the ones I know of. Imagine if President Obama said something about say Texas like Romney has about Chicago or California?

You know after this election I was sort of concerned that the Conservatives in this country would re-group, reflect on their loss and get their act together. The would support comprehensiveness immigration reform, move a little (but not substantiated) toward the center on taxes, and use that strategy to outflank Obama and stage a comeback. It would be the death knell of my lulz, the butthurt would dry up and all my entertainment would dissipate.

But the past week has made me giddy. If anything the butthurt is increasing at an exponential level now. MORE BENGHAZI!!!! THEIR WAS A CONSPIRACY TO GET TO PETRAUES SO HE WOULDN'T TALK ABOUT WHAT HE KNOWS!!!! OBAMA WON BY GIVING AWAY FREE STUFF TO THOSE HORRIBLE MINORITIES AND WOMEN!!!! CLOSE THE BORDER!!!!! NO TAX HIKES FOR THE RICH EVEN IF IT MEANS RAISING TAXES ON THE MIDDLE CLASS!!!!!

You guys really are coming unhinged. It's glorious.

Romney circa 02/12: Ya know who are sponges and feeloaders? Minorities. All they want is free stuff, and there's nothing I can do about it, they're just gonna continue to sponge and freeload their entire lives, teach their children to be sponges and freeloaders, there in making it a culture of sponges and freeloaders. As far as I'm concerned, I'd remove all their social programs that they think are entitlements because they breed like rabid ferrets, and let them suffer into oblivion. I think comparing them to rodents and other small creatures that scurry about and breed out of control to become pests is the best analogy I can come up with. No amount of teaching and training is going to change their genetic make up, so why even try?

Romney circa 11/12: The minorities were bribed to vote for Obama!

Good politicians know that the month after the election is the best time to lay some blame on yourself - it makes you look good and doesn't cost you anything. Newt may be half scrotum, but he's from the older breed that still knew how to politic.

What free healthcare?

2012-11-15 08:23:30 AM
Politicians represent the interests of voters, not the interests of taxpayers. They are not employees. Somebody who pays a larger amount of taxes is not entitled to more say in government than somebody who pays less. So if African Americans, Hispanics and young women vote in quantity, any sensible politician will see they get something from the government.

But because they don't pay as much to the government as rich people, whatever they get is labeled a "gift" - which is very narrow-minded.

This is why I disagreed so strongly with pundits on election night who were talking about how "sincere" Romney's concession speech was or how it would have been a different race if the guy that gave that speech showed up for the rest of the campaign.

The speech was clearly nothing more than a good chunk of his victory speech with some stuff tacked onto the front about calling the president and congratulating him.

In his heart Romney never conceded. Because why? Unpatriotic douchebag.

Obama promised a bunch of free stuff if you voted for him. Political bribery or not, call it what you will, but that's what he did. It's been an inherent flaw in democracies for politicians to promise to give away to the masses more free stuff (which must, of course, first be taken from someone else in the population - a minority which everyone can scapegoat and no one will care about, like rich people).

Every one of you people commenting in this thread enjoy a standard of living your ancestors barely 100 years ago could ever dream of, yet you cry on and on about how the rich are fleecing you when (excluding rent seekers - a.k.a. political cronies who corrupt the market through government intervention to extract economic rents - i.e. most of Obama's wealthy backers) you can only become rich in the private sector by producing the best good or providing the best service for the lowest cost to make consumers (i.e. all of us) better off. Mutually beneficial exchange happens all the time in a market economy, and thieves rarely ever last long enough to become massively wealthy (without the help of government cronies, of course). Have any of you ever read Adam Smith?

Curious - which counties? Some of the richest counties are the ones surrounding DC alone - sounds to me like they were a bunch of cronies who got rich by buying off the right people to give themselves perks. Go ahead and keep trying to draw your tenuous correlations to support your broadbrushing statement, and keep rooting for your political football team, though. Rich people who vote for Obama are OBVIOUSLY all unselfish while rich people who vote against Obama are OBVIOUSLY all selfish.

Mitt promised to cut my taxes 20%, increase military spending, let me take my SS money and invest it in the stock market so I could make millions for my retirement, eliminate the parts of Obamacare I don't like, but keep the parts of Obamacare I did like, not reduce or eliminate any government programs I liked, including education, add 12 million jobs, and do all the above by balancing the budget. If I was willing to be bought by a politician making promises to give me stuff without a means to pay for it, I would have voted Romney in a heartbeat.

HST's Dead Carcass: Romney circa 11/12: The minorities were bribed to vote for Obama!

Romney's too blinkered and cloistered an idiot to see the deep racism in that statement. Non-whites don't vote by considering their wider best interests and that of their families, they vote for free-Walmart days. Not being smart enough to keep those thoughts to his golf club buddies reaffirms his complete lack of qualities for presidency, something the citizens of London, for example, already understand. Now now, to his credit when he lost he didn't call in the lawyers. He didn't turn it into a clusterfark in the only real and true way that someone of his wealth knows how. I honestly gave it a 50/50 chance that it was going to go that way no matter what.

But he didn't. And it pains me to say it, but that is to his credit.

However with a man of such extreme hubris I fear to say that he's not going away, or at least not without some parting shots. It's mostly just impotent rage over the fact that he now holds no public office for all that he spent and the general consensus is that he us largely unwanted for a gig like that in any state.

Some Adam Smith quotes for the Derpers:

"Whenever the legislature attempts to regulate the differences between masters and their workmen, its counsellors are always the masters. When the regulation, therefore, is in favor of the workmen, it is always just and equitable; but it is sometimes otherwise when in favor of the masters."

"The proposal of any new law or regulation of commerce which comes from this order, ought always to be listened to with great precaution, and ought never to be adopted till after having been long and carefully examined, not only with the most scrupulous, but with the most suspicious attention. It comes from an order of men, whose interest is never exactly the same with that of the public, who have generally an interest to deceive and even to oppress the public, and who accordingly have, upon many occasions, both deceived and oppressed it."

"All for ourselves, and nothing for other people, seems, in every age of the world, to have been the vile maxim of the masters of mankind. "

"It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expence, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion. "

"This disposition to admire, and almost to worship, the rich and powerful, and to despise or, at least, neglect persons of poor and mean conditions, though necessary both to establish and to maintain the distinction of ranks and the order of society, is, at the same time, the great and most universal cause of the corruption of our moral sentiments."

Hydra: Have any of you ever read Adam Smith?

Yeah.. Here is something Adam Smith said pertinent to this conversation:

"The necessaries of life occasion the great expense of the poor. They find it difficult to get food, and the greater part of their little revenue is spent in getting it. The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. A tax upon house-rents, therefore, would in general fall heaviest upon the rich; and in this sort of inequality there would not, perhaps, be anything very unreasonable. It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion."

Meanwhile, Tagg was gathering his family friends together under a private-equity fund in anticipation of the taxpayer-funded handouts they would be able to grift under a Romney presidency. What is your budget plan? "Policies to promote growth" isn't a plan. Give details - tax rate and deduction changes. The budget kicks in in a few weeks so you must have something concrete.

It's easy to just swipe at Mitt, and apparently the voyage from magnanimous concession to biatchy loser is a short one, but Romney's points are extremely weak.

College loan rates: Obama signed a bill passed by Congress that prevented what would have been a doubling in college loan interest rates due to the structure of the laws that set up that system. Nobody wanted that, left or right, which is why it managed to pass through Congress in an election year.
Contraceptive coverage: This isn't a giveaway of any sort. It says that if you offer health insurance, you need to cover contraception. That means you pay for it in your health insurance. It's as "free" as the "free" drink you get in your McDonalds combo meal.
Keeping college-aged people on their parents' health insurance: Again, not free. Mom and dad are simply allowed to keep paying for young adult kids on their plan as they establish themselves.
Health care for the poor: Yes, finally we get to something the government will be subsidizing. But we're also going to be keeping the poor & indigent out of emergency rooms and other emergent care facilities by keeping them healthy in the first place. In the end it'll be more efficient and people overall will be healthier. What do you want - to give them free check-ups and basic healthcare now, or wait until they're at the emergency room with expensive major problems?

Listening to a guy with hundreds of millions be so upset - nay, angry - that poor families with kids making $20-35K might be getting regular health care the rest of us are paying for is galling. How do you tell someone their kid can't get regular check-ups because they're poor and you don't want your government to help them? How does he look at his own cute little grandkids and think "eh, those other poor kids that aren't ours, fark 'em." How does that even begin to square with his faith?

You aren't. Like the rest of us, you are dependent upon human society for your very survival.
If society had not supported and protected you in a myriad of ways throuhout your life - you would not exist.
Under pre-civilization conditions, your soft, coddled, civilized ass would last about 15 seconds.
If you were solely responsible for yourself, you would be long dead - if you'd ever been born at all.

Only if you don't regard taxes as an obligation - a bill to be paid. Otherwise, a discount off those taxes is, in fact, a subsidy.
Of course, if you subscribe to the "taxation is theft" school, the discussion is over, and I have no point to make.

amiable: Hydra: Have any of you ever read Adam Smith?

I'd like to point out that more than half the country categorically denied Romney. They didn't just deny him the presidency, they rejected him wholly as an attempted leader, knowing he was lying, outright and completely, about many of his claims, and promises. They smelled his BS like a fart in the car.

The residents of this nation stood up at once and said: No! Not yours! You can't have it. Those that were opposed to his competitor couldn't even be bothered to leave the house to vote for him. He was such an unsaleable force in the political environment, his own kind left him forsaken! That's very telling about a candidate when he can't even whip up his own base, because they know he's full of it.

So, no, we're not spiking the ball. We're congratulating each other on a job well done and you come into OUR party like a drunk ex-wife and start complaining and whining. We politely asked you to leave, but, no you have something to say, you want to ruin it for us. Well, I'm sorry. We're not going to put up with it.

Not only is your candidate a loser, you are, as well. You backed a loser. There are some on your side of the fence that were cogent about the election and stayed home, knowing Romney was a loser, but you had to go balls deep, parade around, showing your ass and making a fool out of yourself during the process. So, when we simply show you how egregiously moronic you were, you fall back on the tried and true Right Wing platform of playing the victim.

Now, mind you, we were gonna let it go, but since you Republicans like to talk about rape so much and how it's not a big deal, we all decided in a secret forum only for Lefties to verbally rape you and your kind every time you decide to show up with your stupid persecution complex. You want to be the victim? You got it buddy! I got you flagged and will dog you and your victim complex for the next four years, lest you forget exactly how bad your candidate was, and how badly he lost.

For the next four years, we will treat you EXACTLY as you've been acting: As victims, and as such, we are going to victimize you every chance we get. We don't like it, but we want you to fit in. You chose the role, not us, so quit crying about your position. It was your decision to be the victim, not ours, we're just more than happy to accommodate you.

Lessee...

-Okay, forgiving student college loan 'interest' is a nice little favor. But the principal is still there, and last I checked, the laws and rules on student loans ensures that will have to be paid almost without exception, even through bankruptcy.

-Obamacare isn't 'free', and that disingenuous chucklefark best stop pretending that being required to BUY healthcare isn't the same thing as getting healthcare coverage for free. Now, if you're below the poverty line, you get some help, as well you should.

-As one might surmise... demonizing the children of a growing and ever more significant part of the population doesn't exactly endear you, or your party, to them. I am not going to penalize someone who came here as a toddler or child. No, I'd rather support them, help them, bring them into the fold. This is the only home they know, and I'll be damned if some xenophobic ass is going to force them to leave and go to what amounts to a foreign nation because it makes them feel 'concerned'.

Not to mention it is really hard for them to accept their declining role in the US. If they really paid attention to demographics (not just minorities increasing but the fact that the GOP plan does not sell to younger voters nearly as well as the Democrat platform) they may see the real reason they lost and will continue to lose for the foreseeable future. Yeah, because rewarding people for being losers is what made America great, amirite?

If there's anything we've learned, it's to remove any incentive to succeed, and to reward people for sitting on their ass and/or being stupid.

Whatever. Taxing someone less is not giving them anything. It's taking less from them.

for you and all the crying GOPers:

I want a government that does something.
I want a social safety net, I want affordable healthcare, if that means the government needs to get involved, fine. I want modern roads and infrastructure, I want our children, all of them, to have access to top notch education, I want tax incentives for American companies to keep manufacturing jobs in America not move them into China. I want collective bargaining rights for our work force. I want clean water/air/soil...you get the idea.

That's the kind of America I want, and it seems most American voters want that too.

You either don't want those things for the country or you don't seem to understand that they cost money. Either way, you had a chance to vote for what you want. You live in a democracy, and you've been out voted.

If a small tax hike is what it takes to move this country in the direction I'd like to see it go is necessary, fine.
Tax them, tax me I get how this works and I'm saying, do it.

I've never needed government assistance, but I'm glad it's there for people who do. I know several people who've used some form of assistance in hard times that, thanks to the help, are productive tax payers right now. Maybe you don't get how that works.

You and yours can cry all you want. You're wrong, and we're moving on.

Welp, anyone who thought this election might serve as a wake up call to the Republican Party can let go of that dream because it's simply not going to happen. On one hand, my inner four year old is cheering because "ha ha Republicans are too stupid to figure out why they lost and take corrective measures, so we're going to win even bigger in 2016." But my inner adult counters with "but that means America has to do without a sensible opposition party for the foreseeable future. That's not a good thing." We (America and Democrats) need a sensible opposition party to temper the excesses of the party in power, to craft compromise legislation that makes more than just one side happy, to bring alternative ideas to the table (sorry GOP, "no!" is not an alternative idea).

This is how it's going to be until that third party comes along.

What I find most interesting, and what I haven't heard a lot of commentators mention, is that this is essentially a restatement of the 47% line, albeit with a few more Americans included. We spent the whole election trying to figure out what was the "real Mitt" and it turns out it was 47% Mitt. The one and only thing you can count on with Romney is his genuine contempt for the average American.

And he learned nothing. He probably does think that one of the reasons he lost is because he got CAUGHT making the 47% speech, not because the speech reflected something fundamental about him that was both completely transparent and overwhelmingly distasteful.

Thanks for reminding us that we made the right decision, Mitt. I genuinely hope we never hear from you again. Go live your toxic life and leave us alone.

Let's oversimplify the electoral process and see if we can find a problem. Set complexity level to 'Flintsones'.

Say Fred needs 50.001% to 'win' an election as Grand Poobah of the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos. Unfortunately, he's effectively alienated 47% of the members when an angry rant over the wall with Barney becomes public knowledge throughout Bedrock.

This means the Flintstone/Rubble ticket must win 94% of the remaining votes if they ever hope to wear the sacred hat.

Fred's campaign strategy is to focus mainly on the interests of 20% of the members.

Who is likely to win - Fred Flintstone or incumbent Poobah Barock O'BamBam?

If you take advantage of all the various Uncle Sucker programs it comes out to about $22K/year. So why would you even bother doing something other than sitting on your ass down on filth-and-muck end of the ladder?

Well, do you think it is fair that billionaires pay more in sales tax then dozens of poor people will earn in a year? They are the true victims. Put these people to work to pay off the differences, there are fields that need to be harvested, roads that need to be worked on. Turn the government lands over to the job creators and make laws that the poor people have to work on these lands and in the factories for free as a form of punishment until they too become rich enough to pay more. This will both get rid of welfare, and take the unfair burden the wealthy have endured for the last century. Only then can we be a free society again!

Without a solid thorough education, it's pretty easy to be making that much, if not less.

Minimum wage is 7.25... 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, that comes out to a whopping 15k and change. And that's gross, not counting taxes that, oddly enough, do end up being taken out of their paychecks.

Tell me, if you will, how that is 'sitting around on one's ass'? And how, exactly, is someone making that much, trying to provide for a family, going to afford anything more than basic food/shelter?

rufus-t-firefly: Shhh...he's endorsing an increase in tax rates. Now we just have to decide if they'll be progressive (the rates, that is).

What I endorse is CUTTING SPENDING. We could lower EVERYONE'S tax if we spent less.

I think it's funny that you guys see the Greek model as the solution, and not the problem.

I am all for changing tax policy so that it isn't REGRESSIVE where it is now. But that's not so much federal income tax policy, except for the mortgage interest deduction I mentioned before.

A good example is the gas tax. That kills the working schlep who commutes to work 35 miles each way for a measly $85,000 or whatever. But for a successful person, he doesn't give a shiat about gas tax. If gas was $20 a gallon, it wouldn't make him a flit of difference.

So I would remove the gas tax, and pick it up elsewhere, in a way that is less regressive. Like in a luxury tax for expensive, low-economy vehicles.

SevenizGud: If you take advantage of all the various Uncle Sucker programs it comes out to about $22K/year. So why would you even bother doing something other than sitting on your ass down on filth-and-muck end of the ladder?

You've obviously never been on a Social Program in your life. Congratulations! And, I honestly hope you never have to. Things you cannot have while on Social Programs: Mortgage Payments (if you outright own the house, you are told to sell it and live off the equity instead), Car Loans (they tell you to sell it and take the earnings to buy a car outright), a full-time or part-time job (taking home more than $100 pre-tax wages in a week disqualifies you for many social programs).

But, let's see what you do get: $300 a week, plus $80 in food stamps.

So, Mr. High And Mighty, go ahead and live like a welfare queen, you can only spend $300 cash a week (cumulative to $1200 a month for all bills), and $80 in food. If you have kids, we can add another $40-60 per kid per week. Remember, that Food Stamps only work for food, you can't go spend it elsewhere.

Go ahead, come back in a month and tell us how great the Welfare system is and Food Stamps is living high on the hog.

(psst, now's the time where you make excuses about not having to do it because you're better prepared in life, but can't see the stupidity of your statements.)

Obama is "divisive" because the right refused to work with him since day 1 of his presidency, and reaffirmed their ambitions in 2010 when they thought their momentum would carry through to today. Because he didn't cave into their every demand, it must mean that he's polarized Washington even more.

The Why Not Guy: Welp, anyone who thought this election might serve as a wake up call to the Republican Party can let go of that dream because it's simply not going to happen.

Democrats have moved so far to the center and center-right that they are functioning as both parties right now. As a supporter of "single payer" health care reform, I've got plenty to not be happy with under Obamacare.

But it was still better than the "let everyone but me die so I can get another tax cut" plan the 1% Right on FOX was proposing for the country.

There's about 4.3M recipients of TANF benefits, 3/4 of those are children (effing freeloaders, amirite?).

That leaves us with about 1M adults who receive TANF benefits, less than one-half of 1% of the adult population.

According to HHS, in any given month, about half of all TANF recipients live in a family unit with at least one person who is employed, but those earnings are so low they are still eligible for a small amount of benefits.

Nearly 30% of TANF recipients live in a family with at least one person who works a full-time job, but again their income level is at or below the poverty level.

Half of all persons who enter the TANF rolls and begin to receive cash benefits from the program will exit the rolls within 4 months, three of every four TANF entrants will exit within a year, and only about 1 in 6 will receive benefits for 20 months or longer.

Your idea that people are living off of TANF benefits generation after generation is simply not true. But you'll have to ignore that (which you've clearly chosen to do) if you want to continue to scapegoat welfare recipients (3/4 of which are children) as the source of all of our fiscal woes.

I always say this because it's true: I do volunteer work with folks that are on these programs. Across the board, nearly all of them don't want to be on them, but, that's the hand life dealt them. For a myriad of reasons, people rely on social programs to simply get by in life. There are the lazy ones or the ones that have given up on life that milk the system, that is very true, but they are a small portion of the average person on the programs.

Demonizing people for being on them is not the route to go. Actually doing something about it is the proper way to handle it. I take the time to help people do a variety of things, learn skills, properly prepare them for the work ahead of them, and I am very proud to have helped a good number of people actually get off social programs by helping them find jobs, make resumes, teaching them skills, finding a halfway house, or finding them an apartment. I didn't do it for them, I showed them how to do it. I personally spend my time, free of charge, doing this. I go into homeless shelters to help them. I pull up in my fancy car, nice clothes, and slightly overweight bulk to show them what they can be. I was there, I pulled myself out of the fire by having someone show me the ropes, and I took what they taught me and gave myself a good life.

Those that don't care for my help don't get it. There's nothing I can do for someone that isn't willing to help themselves.

I don't ask anything of anyone I'm not already doing myself. If you don't like the 'freeloaders' of America getting a 'free ride', why not do the work yourself to help them attain a level of living you find acceptable.

Now, mind you, we were gonna let it go, but since you Republicans like to talk about rape so much and how it's not a big deal, we all decided in a secret forum only for Lefties to verbally rape you and your kind every time you decide to show up with your stupid pers ...

rufus-t-firefly: unexplained bacon: SevenizGud: HST's Dead Carcass: You've obviously never been on a Social Program in your life.

Uhm, actually, I have. I know, I know hypocrite and all that.

When I was in graduate school, and making almost nothing, and working in the lab about 60 hours a week on medical research, AND teaching undergrad courses, and taking graduate courses of my own, AND paying for the privilege to do so, I took advantage of a program that knocked 10% off my electric bill as long as I was under such-and-such kwh/month. So it saved me about $10/month.

I've never taken advantage of any government program like that...I consider myself lucky.

I'm glad it was there for you though.

I'm glad that anyone can get help, even if he turns into a hateful asshole who wants it to be unavailable to everyone else. When some people need help, they turn against those that helped them and want to erase the fact that they ever needed help. It's a shame.

more and more the angry modern RWers seem to have some sort of mental problem.
they're mad as hell at what they wrongly perceive and there's no talking them out of it.

often it just seems like thinly veiled racism, since they seem to blame minorities for using government aid almost exclusively, while simultaneously forgiving themselves for any aid they themselves took advantage of (that's different because *insert BS here). But it's more than just that, they seem ill to me.

2012-11-15 10:21:27 AM

The Why Not Guy: Welp, anyone who thought this election might serve as a wake up call to the Republican Party can let go of that dream because it's simply not going to happen.

This lack of an effective opposition party has me concerned, as well, though I am not at all convinced that an effective third party will come along. Or even that it is desirable. I have lived long enough to have been through a couple of instances of unitary government (Dem and GOP) that the very idea gives me the hives (figuratively speaking). Therefore, I am fairly comfortable with the Dems holding the WH and Senate, while th GOP holds the House. That means both side will have to compromise their extremes to get anything done. And the side that won't compromise at all will be painted into the same obstructionist corner the GOP ended up in after the debt ceiling debacle last year.

So, while the GOP holds the House the Dems will have to curb their strongest tax & spend proclivities, a Democratic President will be picking new supreme court justices, assuring a more progressive tone on the bench for years to come.

Moreover, the GOP can't really exercise their brand of leadership from the House. They can only react to initiatives from the WH, while the President beats them with a stick. Sure, they appropriate the money, but that's only really in reaction to the Administration agenda.

Of course, it's too early to declare definitively what the GOP will look like over the next couple of Congresses, but we can take a clue from this article, in which the Governors primarily see Romney's defeat as his fault, and that there is no need for substantive change to their narrative.

Good luck with that.

jso2897: morlinge: jso2897: morlinge: I think all this article proves is how much the democrats love to gloat after their victory. Clearly the republican party is trying to be the bigger man, but the democrats just cannot stop spiking the ball. Really disgraceful.

(notsureifserious.jpg)

It makes me want to make sure that my state is on the list to secede. If the democrats cannot play fairly with the republicans I think the only sensible thing is to take the ball and go home... crying... about the ref, and the fans, and the opposing players, and the court, the rules, the fact that their team isn't allowed to run with the ball and has to dribble, the fact that someone called them a name, and the fact that the expensive uniforms don't make a difference.

WTF am I reading? I get that the Republicans are being whiney sissies - but why would that kindle your interest in this 100% bogus "petition" bullshiat?

The point I was trying to make is that the republicans are being sore losers, complaining since the election ended, and calling the democrats bad sports.

SevenizGud: Xcott: If you end up being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, that's your fault for not taking personal responsibility for your "self."

Yeah, it's clearly someone else's fault. They should be held accountable for my health care.

I'm starting to see the problem here: you're equating taxes with blame.

For example, if I have a health insurance plan that covers a severe illness, that means the insurance company thinks my illness is "someone else's fault." Because it's coming out of other people's premiums, right? If my house burns down and my home insurance pays for it, that means I'm blaming everyone else for my house fire.

And if the government pays to repair flood damage with county money, that means they're blaming me, the taxpayer, for making that flood. Because they're using my money to pay for it.

Under this weirdly juvenile understanding of insurance, the very concept of insurance flies in the face of personal responsibility. So does the concept of taxation---not just high taxes, but any taxes---because it's wrong to have to pay for anything that isn't your fault.

Maybe a compromise solution is to keep the system the way it is, and anyone who objects on these grounds can be herded to a playground to spend the next 4 years fighting over how to divide a large bag of M&Ms.

Total bullshiat. Gates and Buffett are two of the richest people in the world, and they are giving almost everything away. So the most generous people are the richest people in the world, clearly.

The rich aren't the most generous. Middle-class Americans give a far bigger share of their discretionary income to charities than the rich. Households that earn $50,000 to $75,000 give an average of 7.6 percent of their discretionary income to charity, compared with an average of 4.2 percent for people who make $100,000 or more. In the Washington metropolitan area, for example, low- and middle-income communities like Suitland, Md., and Capitol Heights, Md., donate a much bigger share of discretionary income than do wealthier communities like Bethesda, Md., and McLean, Va.

How about people with net worths more than $10 billion as a percent of net worth given away during their life?

You know what amazes me? That people would even consider voting for a person who would use visual post-production techniques to deceive the American people.

Take, for instance, this picture at the Democrat convention (FFS), where they are clearly try to make it seem like Obama increased the number of ships and jets by trying to fool the American people into thinking that ships from other naval forces and jets from other air forces are ours. Hey guys, look at all these NEW SHIPS. You haven't seen THESE SHIPS in our forces before, have you? Therefore we must have built them on my watch, right?

That's the kind of disgraceful patent dishonesty that I think should disqualify him from being president. But what do I know, the American sheeple already showed that they would elect a guy who thinks there are at least 57 states. WTF?

I'd like to encourage every Republican to continue using the word "leeches" to describe poor people, old people, sick people, ethnic minorities, women, gays, students and everyone else who isn't a white male between the ages of 20 and 60.

In fact, you may wish to step it up a notch and start calling them parasites. And maybe call for their elimination, for the good of the Fatherland.

That'll start winning elections for you guys. I just know it in my heart!

/you're welcome

Whatever. I would never argue with a lib about what class warfare is, as you guys are the experts at that.

Basically, what I am hearing around here from some folks is: If you ain't pumping money into to something you are not contributing. So Romney is doing more for you than say a fire fighter, nurse, etc because he (while not having a job) is helping others by taking money from the many and giving it to the few.

Got it.

your anecdote sucks.

so you want to keep the programs? ok great, me too.

I hope you realize that no one is ok with these programs being abused including Obama.
So how is what you want any different than what I, a self admitted "dumbocrap" voter (who has taken less from these social programs than you btw) want? explain...please for the love of money, explain yourself.

What is it exactly that you want? You don't seem to be interested in the stats as far as who is using these programs, yet you want them to be there only for people who aren't "being losers"....you're all of the map with absolutely no idea about what it is you're mad at.

Thats nothing.

Last week I was at the Whole Foods. Some guy walks in wearing an Armani suit, but with the pants down around his ass, you know how they do it. The woman he was with was wearing some Dolce & Gabana dress and those big blinged out glasses. She was chatting away on her brand new iphone.Their rug rast, completely decked out in tap out clothing, were playing on their brand new ipad minis. They were loud and rude to everyone as they went through the store. I was waiting patiently in line at the shade grown coffee counter and they cut right in front me, laughing as they did it. They ordered the most expensive lattes, paid for it with their welfare card, took two sips and then tossed them away. I watched as the paid for the rest of their groceries with the welfare EBT as well. After leaving the checkout, the got into their brand new Bentley (which was parked right in front of the doors, how typical) and then drove it to the other side of the lot into their Sea King Helicopter and left.

We needed Romney to stop the helicopter welfare queens!

SevenizGud: why do MY CHILDREN have to suffer through my purchasing power being eroded through my money being given to losers?

I would argue that only two things really drive conservative morality: is us versus them, and punishment and reward. Worship of free markets, psychological dependence on dualistic religious schemes of heaven and hell, and even their apparent mass lack of empathy is really all about punishment and reward. If you didn't get rich enough with the right job, you deserve to be poor and die of untreated medical conditions. If you didn't keep your legs crossed, you deserve to be forced into childbirth. If you did anything to bring yourself under government suspicion, you deserve to be subject to police brutality and torture. The rest of the racial and religious aggression and resentment is just a function of tribal us versus them mentality. Sanctity, loyalty and authority aren't core values of the conservative mind, but simply functions of the principles of punishment and reward, and us versus them. Link

Shocking how much mileage I'm getting out of this eerily accurate blog post.

Seems relevant:

Reagan is often lauded as "the great communicator," but what he often communicated were lies and distortions. For example, during his stump speeches, while dutifully promising to roll back welfare, Reagan often told the story of a so-called "welfare queen" in Chicago who drove a Cadillac and had ripped off $150,000 from the government using eighty aliases, thirty addresses, a dozen Social Security cards and four fictional dead husbands. Journalists searched for this "welfare cheat" in the hopes of interviewing her and discovered that she didn't exist. But this phony imagery of "welfare cheats" persisted and helped lay the groundwork for cuts to programs that help the poor, including children.

How would any possible inflation or other effect, somehow, not affect others as well?
What is your fascination with these 'losers'? I ask because it sounds like being employed is winning, from those of a similar philosophy to your own, even if it's for minimum wage that would make sufficiently low income to qualify for these support programs.

I was just trying to find some more background on your rather dramatic claim that you give 85% in charity. In that other thread, you said maybe you'd be more charitable if you hadn't already had your money taken... $300k worth, apparently. Which could have been used, you know, to actually employ people, but you decided to take the profit and pay the taxes and then give to charity. If you're going to give 85% to charity regardless, why not take a lower profit (since apparently your business is structured in such a way that you have a degree of control that allows you to at least mentally conflate the taxes your business pays with taxes you personally pay) and hire some people, getting them off the government teat, and reducing how much you're giving to the government that you seem to find abhorrent? It might not be the greatest business decision, but you're just giving that money away anyway, why not do it in a way that would seem to be more in line with the minimal government philosophy you've espoused here?

Paper that the register person took as payment, that wasn't US currency, and wasn't traveler's checks or a regular check.

But you are right. I could have mistaken rolls of quarters for food stamps. I guess.

Paper, you say? Link

How do I obtain my food stamp benefits?

Your food stamp benefits are automatically deposited to your Oklahoma Access Card account on the same day of each month you are eligible. You can check with your county office to find out which day you receive your benefits.

How do I use my Oklahoma Access Card to shop?

You can use your Oklahoma Access Card at all grocery stores that display the Oklahoma Access Card sticker. After you have completed your shopping, tell the cashier you are using your Oklahoma Access Card for your food purchases.

Most grocery stores in Oklahoma accept the Oklahoma Access Card. If you make a purchase in another state, look for the Quest ® logo which means your Oklahoma Access Card will be accepted.

To use your card, you or the cashier swipes your card through the point-of-sale (POS) equipment. The cashier or the register automatically enters the amount of your food purchase. YOU must then enter your secret 4-digit PIN on the machine's PIN pad. Never tell the cashier or anyone else your secret PIN. Never ask the cashier to enter your PIN for you.

The machine prints your receipt with your purchase amount and the amount of food stamp benefits you have left. If you want to purchase any non-food items not eligible under food stamp rules, you must pay for these with cash or another form of payment such as a debit or credit card.

This happens all the time on FARK. Somebody has a juicy story about standing in line behind a breathing stereotype who uses "food stamps." Usually the poster isn't dumb enough to actually claim they used paper stamps. But even then, these stories simply defy logic, unless these people are pervy freaks who stand pressed up against the person in front of them in line. Or they actually lean forward over their shoulders to see what card they are paying with. Nobody does that, ever, unless they have major cognitive/behavioral problems. Its a laughable lie.

The business owner (in this case, a pizzeria owner) can purchase a Camaro for his business. Not only does the business owner get to enjoy the car as he wants, there's an added benefit: the car is tax deductible as an operating expense.

Has it occurred to you that maybe the business owner simply didn't want to shame the awesomeness of a Camaro by putting one of those stupid lights on top that advertises his business?

Has it also occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, those 2 pizza delivery guys were going shopping right before a shift change? One guy's shift ends, the other takes the keys and drops off guy #1 at home?

Does that make sense, Flash?

The writing was perfectly fine. You people deliberately mis-interpreted it because of your bias.

More importantly, it's still a true story. At that time my wife and I had:

A. a new Nissan
B. an old Mercedes 350SE
C. a Honda Civic hatch

The camaro was better than any of those 3 cars (slightly better than our Nissan, and much better than the other two). So that was the last time that I saw someone with a better car than me paying with food stamps. Which was the question. And which I answered totally truthfully. In short. Suck it, haters.

Incorrect. You're not accepting alternative, reasonable explanations. Yours could be the correct explanation, mine could be correct. The point is, nobody knows what the correct explanation is, and this is why you're getting flamed, because you're insisting that you're correct.

I love how you guys make up all these fantasy scenarios to counter....what?

It was exactly like I said it was. Did I consider alternatives, like maybe they had just won the car in a drawing at ace hardware? No. It was exactly like I said it was.

So what? Does being a couple exclude them from working for the same pizzeria?

Not categorically - although restaurant and bar owners generally don't like to hire husband/wife teams - they tend to steal.

Okay, first of all, do children really apply for food stamps often?

But more to the point...why do MY CHILDREN have to suffer through my purchasing power being eroded through my money being given to losers? It may not be those losers' kids' fault, but I can tell you one thing for sure...it isn't the fault of MY CHILDREN!

Your lazy little brats should be in the mines too. What have those little leeches done to earn their keep? .

No, you're adding assumptions to your observations.

You saw two people buying groceries. You say they handed over something that wasn't 'money' but, also from your stated observations, wouldn't fit with any kind of Food Stamp program either. In short, this entire element bespeaks of bullshiat.

You saw two people wearing pizza place attire. Which means they could be delivery staff, they could be the managers, they could be the franchise owners. You don't know.

You saw two people climb into a car that may, or may not, be owned by those two people. It may well be owned by someone else who is allowing them to use said vehicle. You don't know.

A series of assumptions do not validate your Randian perspective.

SevenizGud is claiming that this incident took place some time ago, before the advent of EBT cards, etc. Which would have been, I'm guessing, some time in the 1990s? But you know, all this shouting about food stamps and welfare queens is missing the point.

The point is that Mitt Romney really believes this stuff---he was caught on camera telling us what he believed---and then he went on national TV and lied to us that he wasn't really like that. As soon as it didn't matter anymore, he goes right back to saying that half the country are moochers who are bribed into voting for liberals.

Of course he's going to say that's why he lost the election, because that's what he really believes. Of course, there's another explanation for why he lost: he called half the country a bunch of welfare queens, and could not convincingly lie that he didn't believe this. This last remark just confirms that the voters were right about him.

And really, it's quite rational to vote against someone who holds half of your population in such contempt. I mean, why would he even want to be their president?

This is why I am skeptical of the conservative argument that private charities and faith-based groups, rather than the government, should be taking care of starving people. Those charities are just as exploitable by people who aren't truly in need, and the same moral objection applies to them. If people think food stamps are wrong because of food stamp cheats, then they're not going to donate to a soup kitchen any time soon.

I'm skeptical because any private charity, or faith-based group, can turn any they feel is unworthy away without any recourse.
I'm even more skeptical of any sort of 'contractor' option as that almost always just mean the same expense, for less service provided.

I'm not surprised but I am actually disappointed. I felt he was being the real Romney in his 47% video but I was sorta hoping that he was just doing whatever it took to get elected (not that this is much better). To find out that he is at his heart exactly as selfish and arrogant as we suspected is depressing. Also, it is scary that someone like that could get that close to becoming POTUS.

Oh, I can honestly say at least half of the Republicans are not paying their fair share. I went on facebook and collected about 8 posts the day after the election about them biatching that other people are living off their dime, when in fact, their parents support them and they themselves don't have jobs.

Yet, the poor folk are the ones that are moochers. One guy in particular hasn't held a job in over a decade, his mother pays his mortgage, all his bills and gives him an allowance. He's 37 freaking years old! He tried some BS on me about how his property taxes are going up now that Obama got re-elected and I just straight told him: "Your property tax? And what rate is that? How often is it collected? What's the new rate going to be? Oh, wait, your mom pays that, so you're angry your MOM'S property tax is going up." After that lunch, I've not heard from him. Truth is, I was sick of hearing him whine on and on about crap he doesn't contribute to. Another truth: I will probably never hear from him again.

My father lived off his VA benefits and disability till he died, and it was all he had, which was not much at all.

One of my friends, son of a full bird colonel in the Air Force, got every station he ever asked for, and never once went to Iraq, though he was in the Air Force for 7 years, takes 15% disability from his time in the Air Force. Banging Russian whores and British chicks wears out your body, I guess. He had a desk job and claims his 15% disability is Carpal Tunnel. 15% disability for that, yet he can be found playing video games most nights and even with a Bachelor's Degree can't seem to find a job, so his wife collects WIC and he collects SNAP and some other government funded program, but he's not a mooch. It's President Obama's fault, so he's taking advantage of it, like he says everyone should.

He's now a College Drop Out, having washed out in Pre-Med when his best friend, a doctor, wasn't doing his homework for him anymore. He hasn't outright blamed Obama for that, but does blame Obama that he can't get back into College with Grants because they've been wasted on all the minorities that Obama is trying to give a free ride to.

I've got a relative who's seen all the anti-Obama propaganda films, frequents all the RW blogs, thinks FOX is too liberal, Obama is destroying America with his failed socialist policies...hates Jon Stewart (you know he's really Jewish right!?), but think Colbert is pretty good (totally serious here).

He lived with his parents well into his 40s until he got married, now he lives way beyond his means off his wife's fast diminishing trust fund (Thanks Obama!). He recently quit his job as a waiter because of back problems that no doctor will confirm, has been trying to get on disability and seems to be developing a prescription pill problem.

haven't heard his pompous blowhard opinion about the election yet...don't care if I ever do.

HST's Dead Carcass: morlinge: I think all this article proves is how much the democrats love to gloat after their victory. Clearly the republican party is trying to be the bigger man, but the democrats just cannot stop spiking the ball. Really disgraceful.

Now, mind you, we were gonna let it go, but since you Republicans like to talk about rape so much and how it's not a big deal, we all decided in a secret forum only for Lefties to verbally rape you and your kind every time you decide to show up with your stupid persecution comple ...

I had an orgasm reading this.

Owned so hard.

Another one of my friends, a 'true Conservative', but one of the good ones. He's the type of guy that when the election started getting closer said: "Listen, I'm not going to debate politics with you all anymore until after the election, but I want all of you to promise me you're going to vote. I don't care who you vote for, just vote!" I have respect for this guy for these types of statements. I call him what he calls himself: A true Conservative. He admits he has very little in common with the Republicans making headlines these days, he thinks they're fools and on the take. He thinks the tea partiers are morons, and that the birthers are brain damaged. He doesn't think Obama is a socialist, he just doesn't like the fact he has a (D) after his name, and even says that Obama is a Reagan era Republican. With all his silence about the election, I truly wonder if he voted for Obama.

But, like a True Republican, he swears minorities are living off the government teat and it needs to be stopped! His parents pay his apartment rent (he couldn't live with them anymore because he was always arguing with his mother and brother), pay all his utilities and even do his grocery shopping for him... oh yeah, and they've paid his full way through college to get an associates degree. In his defense, he has MS, so somedays, mobility is not his friend, and it's good his parents go shopping for him, because he doesn't have the foggiest clue how to grocery shop. He's rather racist, and only turned that way after his last job in a call center where he felt the black woman boss gave the minorities working there a easy ride while piling up all the work on him. Now he drops the N word like it's an F bomb (meaning all the time) and has an even worse opinion of what he feels are welfare queens. ANY minority in his book is either on government programs, has been on them or is about to go on them. As bright and insightful as he is, this overriding thought permeates the most logical of his thoughts and just brings them all crashing down.

The best time to debate him is over 2nd Amendment Rights. He's a gun nut that owns a lot of guns, but doesn't know which ammo goes in which firearm. We all had one helluva laugh over that when he was trying to load .38 shells into the magazine for his 9mm. That is not a joke or an exaggeration, and something we tease him about every chance guns are brought up.

HST's Dead Carcass:

My father lived off his VA benefits and disability till he died, and it was all he had, which was not much at all.

My uncle is the same, although he is pretty much apolitical, or at least he keeps it to himself. Korean war Army vet, got shiat for VA benefits, worked a full time civvy job for years, had that retirement stolen from him via something like mittens does to companies, and yet, he's managing his lot in life, my aunt has dementia, it's to the point that he's going to have to find a facility for her, he can't keep watch on her 24/7 anymore (they are both well into their 70s) and it breaks his heart. They are barely scraping by. But you'll never hear him blame anyone. My brother, on the other hand, his wife also gets 'disability' and just started pulling her Medicare bennies in addition to what he pulls down. Her sister also lives with them, a poorly self managed bi polar who also draws disability in her 40s, and has not worked in 20 or more years because of it. My sister was a manager for a quick stop store for almost a year, and "had to quit due to the stress". Every single one of them are the first to jump on the "OMG MOOCHERS" bandwagon.

My sister, whom I do love dearly, went on a rant this past weekend about the forced SHOSHULISM of the ACA, and followed that up with a rant about their current insurance they are 'forced' to buy from my BILs employer at about $400 a month with astronomical deductibles. To top it off, he needed some treatments earlier this year that amounted to about $20K, they went to all the right 'insurance doctors' got all the required referrals, and found out their insurance paid exactly dick. They 'have' to stay with that insurance because of some preexisting conditions. I couldn't explain to her that the ACA will help her with that. They have shopped for another insurance on their own, and of course can't find one that will cover him.

I gave up.

SevenizGud: Aldon: Free stuff for the 1%: Reduced taxes
Free stuff for corporations: Reduce taxes.

Yeah, because letting people keep some of their income is the same as giving them stuff.

Liberal logic right there, ladies and germs.

So if the taxes only on the 1% were reduced to zero by Romney, it wouldn't be 'giving' them anything. Got it.

Conservative 'logic'.

Hunter S. Thompson would be nice to still have around, too.

I'm just a dead carcass now.

No matter. We can't stop here anyway. This is troll country.

They are white. White people don't get handouts. They reap rewards.

Not in my town (60% Hispanic), all the beggars are white, so I guess they do get handouts... unless standing at an intersection with a card board sign is a reward.

In Romney's defense, he may be money hungry, but the contracts offered by these outlets would not compare to what he can make on his own, and he'll get taxed harder with that income. The Wasilla Hillbilly thinks that was a lot of money and that's why she went for it, plus, she's an attention whore, he's just power mad.

Sarah wasn't "sinking" so much as cashing out while the horny old white guys would still shell out money to see/listen to her.

Yeah, and let's not forget the "gift" of a president who knows his ass from his elbow.

It's great to hear the party of personal responsibility blame this loss on everyone else playing mean. Romney was offering stuff to lots of his followers, it was just all aimed at the rich, or people stupid enough to think trickle-down works. Sore losers.
