This has nothing to do with Hemingway, but I learned recently that banana flavoured rum is a thing and when you add it to rootbeer it's like alcoholic liquid candy.

I've tried finding them. Many grocery stores do not carry them anymore. I'm sure you could order them. If you live in a big city you could probably track them down if you were really anal about needing your sugar in cube format.

That had to be the worst slide show ever. (Well one of them.) Scrolling in the little window within the bigger window was crappy on my tablet and I had to break out the computer to finish the damn thing. Will people ever stop using that stupid format?

Too many gin-based cocktails for my liking. Don't know why, but it's the one hard liquor that I can't stand.

The others sound worth trying. The Josie Russell sounds like a favored cocktail from college. Just substitute mountain dew for the hard cider and it's pretty much the same. Oh, and don't forget the GHB.

Shaken or stirred whatever trips your trigger.

I have a book of cocktail recipes called "How Red The Nose, or Breath in the Afternoon," compiled by Esquire Magazine a long time ago. Ernest Hemingway's contribution was a drink made with half absinthe and half champagne.

IIRC, he was a huge fan of daiquiris at the El Floridita in Havana.

BTW, I highly recommend visiting the Hemingway House in Key West.

I thoroughly love trotting this out, called "Winston Churchill's Best Martini":

-Ice (if preferred)
-Good gin
-Vermouth (sweet or dry, your choice)

Pour all ingredients (except vermouth) into a glass. Consume while giving the vermouth a derisive look.

I follow the recipe from Esquire on this:

1 sugar cube
3 dashes Angostura bitters
short splash of club soda
2 oz. rye whiskey

Wet the sugar cube with the bitters and club soda then crush it with a wooden muddler, toss in a large ice cube and the rye whiskey, stir.

Since Templeton Rye has been more available of late, I use that, but double the instructions.

Heaven.

I use 1.5oz gin instead of 1oz and 2-3x as much orange flower water. Also, use a little simple syrup, not sugar.
Add everything but the soda and shake it. I mean really shake the hell out of it for like a minute at least!

Yeah, Hemmingway was a cocktail guy, not a shot guy. He was a heavy drinker, but would be utterly out of place at your typical frat party.

I like a good Old Fashioned, but I hate using sugar or sugar cubes in drinks. It's a pain to get it to dissolve and it almost never all disappears into the drink. Simple syrup (or double-strength syrup if you want to cut down on water added) is sooo much easier and works better imo.

Dash of sugar syrup.

Add the sugar syrup and bitters to the glass. Add fruit, ice, and whiskey. Stir, bruising the fruit as you do so. Drink.

I also like the "Improved" Whiskey Cocktail:

Swirl just enough absinthe in glass to coat the bottom, fill the glass with ice

In mixing glass:
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
¼ oz. simple syrup
¼ oz. Maraschino
2 oz. bourbon or rye

Add ice to the mixing glass and stir.
Strain into your prepared glass.
Add a lemon twist to the drink as a garnish.

Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster

- Take the juice from one bottle of Ol' Janx Spirit.
- Pour into it one measure of water from the seas of Santraginus V - Oh, that Santraginean seawater! Oh, those Santraginean fish!
- Allow three cubes of Arcturan Mega-gin to melt into the mixture (it must be properly iced or the benzine is lost).
- Allow four litres of Fallian marsh gas to bubble through it, in memory of all those happy hikers who have died of pleasure in the Marshes of Fallia.
- Over the back of a silver spoon float a measure of Qualactin Hypermint extract, redolent of all the heady odours of the dark Qualactin Zones, subtle, sweet and mystic.
- Drop in the tooth of an Algolian Suntiger. Watch it dissolve, spreading the fires of the Algolian Suns deep into the heart of the drink.
- Sprinkle Zamphuor.
- Add an olive.

Quite simply, an old fashioned has fruit, by definition. The name comes from having an "Old Fashioned cocktail", which is a reference to the original meaning of the word cocktail itself: a mixture of spirits, fruit, sugar, water, & bitters. A recipe that leaves fruit out entirely is wrong. Some use a lemon twist only. I think that that's a cop out and shouldn't really be called an Old Fashioned, but we'll grant it here. If you don't like it, you don't like it, but it doesn't add that much (any) sweetness to the drink, doesn't crowd out the flavor of the Bourbon. And you're not drinking a "pure" version. I've heard that one, and anyone who insists on it deserves a whack in the face. It's just flat out wrong. I get the same way about "martini"s. If you don't like martinis, fine. Just admit it, and don't insist that drinking gin (or god forbid, Vodka) with a miniscule amount of vermouth or no vermouth is somehow a martini. You're drinking iced gin with an olive dropped in it. A martini is a cocktail that, by definition, requires both gin AND vermouth. Stop being a prat because you want to pretend you're James Bond or whatever. I hear he drinks Heineken now. Bugger off and leave those of us who like cocktails alone, and order one of those.

Sorry, where was I? Oh yeah- fruit in an old fashioned is part of the drink. The lemon and the cherry cancel each other out in sweetness, you add flavor without crowding out the bourbon. What's not to like?

This is just flat wrong. The word "cocktail" never implied fruit, it meant only spirits with sugar, water (just to dissolve the sugar), and bitters. The Old Fashioned whiskey cocktail in particular has gone through many permutations, both with and without fruit, in many different bartenders recipe books over the past century. Suggesting that there is a single definitive recipe that always includes this or that is just blatantly incorrect.

Gin's my spirit of choice, though I've started developing an appreciation for scotch. As far as nice, refreshing beverages though, gin and tonic is hard to beat.

While I'm a bourbon-on-the-rocks kinda guy, I know that's not the way to do gin. Any suggestions for gin-based cocktails without tonic water? I can't stand the stuff (which I've previously taken as a sign that gin's not for me).

I know this drink sounds terrible, and I only made it up because I had an ancient bottle of peppermint schnapps someone left at my apartment after a party, but give it a shot:

The Christmas Martini

Same as a regular martini (1 1/2 - 1 3/4 oz gin), but instead of vermouth, use peppermint schnapps. Shake or stir, pour into a martini glass, and garnish with a peppermint stick or miniature candy cane. The pine flavor of the gin pairs surprisingly well with peppermint, and being a sloppy drunk is more socially acceptable if you're drinking a holiday-themed beverage.
