First rule of Rove: Always attack your opponent for their best qualities. It makes low-information voters a little more confused. And in the case of McCain, he comes up short compared to Obama in, well, just about everything.

Republicans are REALLY hating the fact that this Petraeus scandal is taking away from their Benghazi wankfest. Particularly considering the fact that Petraeus and McCain were like two peas in a pod at one point.

Also this: After a short pause he continued, "There's 4 dead Americans. The lives of other Americans were put in jeopardy. This is a matter of 4 dead Americans. I think that the other issue raised is very serious and I think it deserves a thorough and complete investigation. But it does not rise to the level of an attack on an American consulate that took four American lives."

Because Rice is a leading candidate to replace Hilary. The Repubs are trying to dirty her up, Rovestyle.... they apparently are too dumb to understand that this crap has worn out, and is why they lost the Prez election and lost seats in both the Senate and the House.

Take anything he says about national security with a grain of salt.

you really think Palin was a personal pick from among his own inner circle? i always had the feeling she was shoved into the position by the party leaders who spent big money on her pretty talking head from early on in her career. i think she was an embarrassment to mr. frozen french fries.

The really funny thing is that if the Generals mistress gained access to truly dangerous classified documents somehow. For instance, if she was actually a spy playing the long game, she could very well have gotten her hands on documents that end up putting many, many more American lives in danger. That retarded old codger is so heart-set on making Bengazi a thing that he didn't even consider the question, or answer reasonably.

Well, that coupled with sucking up to the guy that sank his presidential run in 2000, even going so far as to hire the people that launched a mean-spirited, racist attack against him, sank it for me. That's when it was revealed that he is just another guy willing to whore himself out to anyone to get to the big chair.

Remember how after 2008 had winded down, and the inauguration had some and gone we all said to ourselves that these retards would burn themselves out? We consoled ourselves with the thought... nay, certainty! that the retards would get over it, and that there was no way they could stay that angry and that energetic for too long? Yes, we told ourselves that after a few more months they would calm down and let things get back to normal? Boy were we wrong! *sigh*

Because odds are if there were intelligence failures it was because the head ofthe CIA was busier sticking his dick in crazy and playing damage control when she went "crazy" on him than doing his job. Catch-22, Petraeus is a "hero" to Republicans. Thus the answer is to spin it into an attack on the president and those in his administration. I would put more weight into the Republican outrage and investigation if they didn't appear more interested in finding a way to use Benghazi to make the president look bad than in finding answers. Especially since they are the ones who voted to cut funding for embassy security yet refuse to acknowledge that it might have something to do with embassies having insufficient security.

Considering the GOP's behavior, can you imagine how they would have behaved had McCain been a democratic nominee? They were unconscionably rude to John Kerry with respect to his purple heart, Again, if McCain was a dem, I'm sure Fox news would have been endlessly attacking McCain and his ability to fly, or concocting stories about how he got himself into a warrior's prison just to avoid fighting They probably would have go so far as to ask if he was really tortured or if he just made it all up. This is probably the first and maybe the last time I'll say this, but for his sake, it was a goof thing McCain was a republican, It would have been horrible to have to go through those incriminations of being a shiatty soldier, a liar and a fibber,

I had more to say, but I lost my train of thought.

I can't even figure out what the "scandal" is regarding Bengazi.

That it took 7 hours to send a rescue team? Okay then, how long should it have taken. And what makes that a scandal?

That the administration should have told us more or wasn't completely accurate in what happened until about two weeks afterwards? Okay then, what did that change/affect?

Seriously, someone needs to explain what the scandal is. If everything the Republicans say is true, at worst the administration could have done better and been faster with information and reacting to the attack. Valid criticism, but no scandal.

/a scandal needs immoral or illegal activity.

I was a McCain supporter in 2000... I remember well how he lost South Carolina in the primaries.... Bush/Rove went after his military service by having a proxy suggest that he was brainwashed when he was a prisoner.

Then McCain and Bush had a 'debate/joint interview' in SC and McCain basically said that was a low blow, Bush responded by saying with an indignant 'Are you questioning my honor? Don't you question my honor!' (paraphrased). I new McCain would loose at that moment.

There isn't a scandal, this is an attempt to direct Republican rage. We were supposed to be enraged about the economy. We were supposed to be enraged about minorities. We were supposed to be enraged about the suppression of rapists' God-given parental rights. We weren't. Well, at least not in the way they had hoped. So now they keep this in the news, because the kind of people this bullshiat works on won't care about any facts or information (and have, in fact, made it virtually impossible for an unbiased investigation to take place).

Well you see, our president is a ni-*bong* so the Right wing half of this country is ECSTATIC that American's died. They want to pin these deaths on him so badly that they can't even see there is no scandal here (as you have noticed) They know Dubya dropped the ball on 9/11, they are coming to terms with the fact we never should have been in Iraq. The previous administration is responsible for so many civilian and military deaths that they can't even mention his administration anymore. In there twisted minds having Obama be responsible for some American deaths makes Bush look better, Unfortunately they are doing what they ALWAYS do, start with the conclusion and make reality/data fit their needs. We saw this with the recent election, ie Romney will win, so we must make the polls reflect that. We see that with creationism, ie God made it all, so lets make the science show that. We are seeing it with Bengazi, Obama is responsible for those deaths, now lets contrive evidence and a narrative that makes the black man a bad man.

there is no scandal, and there is nothing this Administration could have done, so the Right's tactic is to have first decided he's to pay and next to figure out how. You know, their standard operating procedure.

\My God I've become cynical =(

why? He does such a shiatty job at it, if we weren't mocking him for being such a tool, at the very least we should denigrate him for being so bad at what he does. There's no avoiding the fact he deserves our scorn.

/push polling that McCain fathered a mix-raced child didn't help either.

I was 17 at the time, so I wasn't paying attention to politics yet. That is absolutely despicable. Had McCain not sold his soul to the GOP devil for the 2008 nomination I'd feel bad for him. But he did, so Fark him.

None the less, we are fortunate that there are Americans willing to go and die and be tortured and held prisoner for our sake. As evil and demented as he is and became, he is still worth respecting for having fought for us.

If the John McCain who had served in Vietnam and spent all that time in an NV prison had been the

Am I the only person who doesn't understand why this is a scandal? Look, I get that people died, but being an ambassador in a politically unstable nation like Libya and being physically outside of the embassy (the place guarded by the USMC) is a dangerous business. It just is! Shiat happens, and in a place like Libya, I'm sure it's very difficult to tell what certain groups motivations are, especially when they're masked in some larger context. The terrorists that attacked the consulate were taking advantage of the confusion caused by the riots regarding that dumb anti-Islam video, but of course it takes time to prove these things.

Also, Stevens himself chose to travel with a minimal security detail---he thought it would help him with the "hearts and minds" part of his job. Can't blame Obama for that. Also also, Republicans need to understand the difference between a consulate and an embassy. I'm so sick of hearing people tell me about the "embassy in Benghazi" that got attacked. STFU already, consulates != embassies.

And finally, as others have pointed out, you weren't mad about all the embassy and consulate attacks that resulted in deaths during the Bush admin. Why are you so upset now? Difficulty: you can't admit to taking politics past the national border.

Is this the thread where everyone pretends that McCain was a reasonable moderate back in the day and hasn't been a cranky old ultra-conservative asshole his entire farking career?

The Maverick is a media creation, a product of decades of sucking up to the Beltway press corps with BBQs, donuts and tire swings. McCain has always been a right-wing conservative who holds a grudge. His standing up to Bush was more about sticking it to the guy who beat him in the primaries in 2000 than any sense of principle or fairness. And he's doing the same thing now trying to stick it to the guy who beat him in the general in 2008.

Give the legend a rest, already.

It's kinda funny that these turds keep comparing Benghazi to Watergate and Iran-Contra...two actual scandals (one of them high treason) that were perpetrated not only during Republican administrations, but by Republican administrations, and the efforts made to cover up both incidents were orchestrated by Republicans.

/And surprise of all surprises, two key orchestrators of those scandals are Fox News contributors!

2 things:

-good answer from JohnnyMac, though I'd have liked a bit more "Here's why it's a stupid question" without pimping 4 dead people. 6.5/10, but a few more carefully chosen words and it'd have been a 9 or 10.
-Has there been a single hearing over the intelligence failures leading up to Iraq? How about the coordinated series of embassy attacks (Yemen and somewhere else in Africa are the two I remember right now - within like a month of each other) 10-12 years ago? How about that time a top ...CIA? guy was killed in Afghanistan in one of the first widely-reported Afghan-on-American attacks? My point is that every death is not Watergate, and sometimes, you have to accept that things will happen that we didn't want to: the enemy gets lucky, or they found/exploited a vulnerability we thought we'd covered, or they use a spontaneous protest to stage an already-planned attack, or our initial reports aren't 100% accurate when spokespeople report them on Sunday talk shows.

And sometimes, the top civilian and military people in the country lie to us for 3 months straight to get us involved in a bloody, costly and pointless adventure.

We're supposed to believe that a minor one-and-done embassy strike that killed a whole 4 people is a bigger national security issue than the former head of CENT-COM and current head of the CIA leaking shiatloads of classified documents because his dick wasn't gonna suck itself?

Republicans are OBSESSED with Benghazi. They somehow think that it is some smoking gun for Obama trying to cover-up Al Qaeda. They are trying to turn this into Obama's Waco (which itself was overblown BS).

Just ignore the fact that Obama has had less embassy attacks than any president in the last 50 years. Just ignore that fact that Republicans defunded embassy security. Just ignore the fact that 9/11 and Iraq only happened because Republicans and their appointed Agency Commanders were incompetent and arrogant.

Thing is, she had a security clearance and private access. Even if she wasn't some secret super spy, she could have gotten her hands on shiat she really wasn't supposed to have even if she just wanted it for something as benign as a book.

That's part of why they're digging through her documents after the clearance was revoked - the question currently is if she was told things she didn't need to know. Until that's answered, 'why' isn't a question being asked by anyone but people who depend on ratings for money.

Romney could have actually done better, IMO, if he stuck to the Ryan guns and put that out as a starting point for discussion. Hee hee! The guy who has nothing. Let the facts wash over you, sport shirt:

The State Department denied Tuesday it ever concluded that the deadly consulate attack Sept. 11 in Libya was an unplanned outburst prompted by an anti-Islam movie, despite public statements early on by some in the Obama administration suggesting that was the case.

The Obama administration used the film explanation for more than a week after assailants killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. Most notably, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said in several TV interviews five days after the attack that it appeared to be "spontaneous" violence spinning out of protests of the film.

The worst part of this "scandal" is that they're, like with Fast and Furious, trying to make the "coverup the real crime" argument. Except there's no evidence of a coverup. Or a crime. While I agree with the Senator regarding the Petraeus, and while I also agree that it is nothing less than tragic that four Americans are dead, let's have a little perspective on Benghazi:

June 14, 2002, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan
Suicide bomber kills 12 and injures 51.

February 28, 2003, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan
Gunmen on motorcycles killed two consulate guards.

halfof33: Mr_Fabulous: So

so ... the State Department denied Tuesday it ever concluded that the deadly consulate attack Sept. 11 in Libya was an unplanned outburst prompted by an anti-Islam movie, despite public statements early on by some in the Obama administration suggesting that was the case.

Could you please clarify who specifically is meant by "some in the Obama administration"? Should be easy, if it's a quote. In addition, are the "some in the Obama administration" employees of the State Department?

Didn't Senator John Kerry choose John Edwards for his running mate ?

The same running mate who played up his wife cancer while porking some other chick that ended up having his bastard child ?

Man we better have another look at Kerry judgement.

/ Of course old Teddy replied when told his girl friend was pregnant. "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it."

Absolutely my friend:

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney. In addition to Rice.

Article about McCain => John Kerry => Edwards => Affairs => Ted Kennedy => Chappaquidick?

Did I follow along right? I got a little lost after "Man we better have another look..."

RsquaredW: The worst part of this "scandal" is that they're, like with Fast and Furious, trying to make the "coverup the real crime" argument. Except there's no evidence of a coverup. Or a crime. If this were a court of law, the judge would make a summary judgement - even if all the things the R's allege were true, there's no crime.

At best they had an incident of poorly handled communication after a serious event. They was immediately off-set by Romney acting like a complete partisan, heartless douche.

The scandal started as a net loss in terms of GOP credibility and they continued to dig culminating in a complete when Romney shat his pants on the issue in the second debate. Yet they continued to dig. Notice how Romney wouldn't even bring-up Benghazzi in the third debate regarding foreign policy. Opted to basically agree with everything Obama has done while Obama took him apart.

Big talk from the guy who actually uttered the words, without being sarcastic, "Sarah Palin, will you be my running mate?"

you are always an asshole.
You are *almost* always a liar.
you suck.

Who wants to guess that our hero will spin out some spittle soaked ad hominem in response?

Place yer bets!

I just wanted you to know that I didn't read this post.
None of it.

You know, i don't usually do this, but you people appear intellectually incapable of even formulating a response, let alone understanding the issues.

All I had to do was post two facts: 1. Rice blamed the release of a video trailer on the attack. 2. the White House retracted that position. Simple, truthful, and yet you folks are left stammering with inane personal attacks, led by this joker. And this latest response is easily the most insipid of the lot.

I'd say come at me bro, but the bottom feeders in this thread seem incapable of doing that.

Did McCain not understand the question, or is his Alzheimer's running full force at this point? The "socialite" in question is just what led to the questions the caused them to open an investigation into Prateus, so the actual question is perfectly valid: Are the classified documents found in the possession of Paula Broadwell more of a security threat to the US than the Benghazi incident?

Fark you McCain, you used to have integrity, now it's like you've been Palined.

My God you are daft... 16.5 You can keep responding, and I'll keep not reading your responses. But, keep it up.

Seriously, I get an email saying you quoted me, so I come here and tell you I'm not reading what you say.
Long, long ago you lost any credibility. You have the intellectual integrity of, well, Romney I suppose. I'd sooner talk to a brick wall.

Did he really come and post that to say he is not reading my responses? Twice! LOLOLLOOLLOLLL!!!!

Oh man, that is fantastic! God damn, you know you've crawled up inside someone's head when they do that!

This is such a great thread! I love you guys.
