100 percent of the Earth is melted
The impact does not make a noticeable change in the tilt of Earth's axis (Depending on the direction and location of impact, the collision may cause a change in the length of the day of up to 13.4 seconds.
The impact does not shift the Earth's orbit noticeably./i>

Fail

100% of the earth is melted. The orbit of the earth is shifted. The day of the earth is changed by over 3 MILLION hours. And the crater is over 2 million miles wide.

That.......might ruin your day......

Sweet.

The Earth is completely disrupted by the impact and its debris forms a new asteroid belt orbiting the sun between Venus and Mars.

5m in diameter tungsten rod (19250 kg/m^3 though I don't believe this assumes a shape outside of spherical) from an orbit of 800km produces a nice crater. I say we drop some from orbit.

I knew that it was a Fark Peat-and-Peat post. The Internet Archive (Waback Machine) says that it's been there since November, 2010.

/It only seems like an earth-ending affair because Purdue appointed the Republican governor as president.

The Earth is completely disrupted by the impact and its debris forms a new asteroid belt orbiting the sun between Venus and Mars.
100 percent of the Earth is melted
Depending on the direction and location the collision, the impact may totally change the Earth's rotation period and the tilt of its axis.
Depending on the direction and location of impact, the collision may cause a change in the length of the day of up to 48700000 hours.
The impact shifts the Earth's orbit totally.

Transient Crater Diameter: 1890000 km ( = 1170000 miles )
Transient Crater Depth: 667000 km ( = 414000 miles )
Final Crater Diameter: 12400000 km ( = 7710000 miles )
Final Crater Depth: 40.4 km ( = 25.1 miles )
The crater formed is a complex crater.

Your position was inside the transient crater and ejected upon impact. And, you have died of Dysentery.

/She blowed up real good.

12000 mile diameter asteroid/planetoid with a density of 12000kg/m3, impact angle of 1 degree at 41 miles/sec.

The airblast from halfway around the world is 219dB... 220 is strong enough to rupture internal organs in humans.

Not that it matters, since the Earth became an asteroid field...

I dropped a planet on Earth and got the same message... The Earth lost no mass. The Orbit wasnt changed, the axis was moved by half a degree. Yet the entire planet is now melted.

Another thing that got forgotten was the fact that against all probability a sperm whale had suddenly been called into existence several miles above the surface of an alien planet.

Effects of Thermal Radiation:
Clothing ignites.
Much of the body suffers third degree burns.
Newspaper ignites.
Plywood flames.
Deciduous trees ignite.
Grass ignites.
Your position is in the region which collapses into the final crater.
The air blast will arrive approximately 2.02 minutes after impact.
Peak Overpressure: 11300000 Pa = 113 bars = 1600 psi
Max wind velocity: 2690 m/s = 6020 mph
Sound Intensity: 141 dB (Dangerously Loud)

Damage Description:
Multistory wall-bearing buildings will collapse.
Wood frame buildings will almost completely collapse.
Multistory steel-framed office-type buildings will suffer extreme frame distortion, incipient collapse.
Highway truss bridges will collapse.
Highway girder bridges will collapse.
Glass windows will shatter.
Cars and trucks will be largely displaced and grossly distorted and will require rebuilding before use.
Up to 90 percent of trees blown down; remainder stripped of branches and leaves.

Woo hoo!

Am I the only one who was hoping for some sort of animation sequence to illustrate what some of the effects would be?

This was... underwhelming.

I find it amazing that you take two good-looking, somewhat charismatic people like Ben Afflec and Liv Tyler and put them onscreen together and there is about as much chemistry as a pile of dirt. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones were so amazing together that Zeta-Jones claimed she was highly aroused on set at times.
