While it appears they were pressured a bit, this was very well-said.

Pop quiz hot shot. It's the end of the world. The forces of darkness are closing in all around you. The chill winds of socialism, communism, fascism, and kenyanism are sweeping across the icy tundra of what had once been a land swathed in the green embrace of freedom. The cities have burned. The churches have burned. The streets are empty wastes. You are hungry, you are scared, you are hunted by the very government that should protect you. Alone, huddled in your last bunker with nothing but the rats and the few rounds of ammo you've scavenged, with the winter's winds howling at the door and the tattered remnants of your clothes hanging from your gaunt, starved body, which do you prefer: light, or heat?

Answer that honestly, and in the future I'll thank you to think before you speak.

Look, the Jesuits are all about free speech and differences of opinion. They just draw the line at hateful, useless BS. If you have a position to argue, they'll listen. And then probably demolish you with logic.

Is appealing to someone's better nature really "pressure"?

Looks to me like they realized just how bad a visit from that total Coulter of a human being would look to the rest of campus and that it wouldn't win any hearts or minds. From there, it's a pretty sound decision to avoid alienating the people they hope to bring to their cause.

I mean, you'd have to be a complete Coulter to not realize that they made a good decision here.

This thread hurts.
1. I cannot believe people STILL take Pocket Ninja seriously. PN is epic and funny as hell.
2. Fr McShane is awesome.
3. This is not an issue about 'free speech' since Fordham is a PRIVATE institution and Fr McShane had every right to speak out against the decision to have her speak there. She in no way reflects Fordham's values.

Also some context, Fordham had a rash of hate crimes last spring. The University is taking a very hard stance against any negative, demeaning, or hateful things as that is not only counterproductive but is in direct opposition to positive, constructive, intellectual thought and debate.

A tiny fraction of the country watches Fox News, MSNBC, and other cable news pundit shows. A tiny faction. Something like two million people a night give or take watch Rachael Maddow and Sean Hannity, each.

There are ~300 million people in the country.

These pundits just get all the press...such as threads like this one about Ann Coulter every month. In the media, they become the defacto mouthpieces of their party. In reality, I think most Americans are far more moderate than any of these people.

Coulter and Limbaugh both have the magic stick for trolling Liberals. They can say the most tarring, over-the-top ridiculous crap to bait the HuffPo readership and Facebook lights up like Christmas. Seriously, kids: you're getting trolled. Stop driving traffic to the stories about them, do your part to reduce their marketing buzz. Young Americans for Freedom are really the bad ones, they just tend to infect the CR's via dual membership. I would be surprised if the YAF wing of the Fordham CR's invited Coulter and by the time the President found out, the non-YAF CRs were already trying to kill the invitation.

I remember going through college wishing YAF and Students for Democratic Society would get into a giant knife fight and kill each other off. It would have improved the campus political scene immensely.

Fortunately, he chose the ludicrous side of the coin. If he'd aligned with something mostly reasonable, it might be hard to know if he was serious or not.

Because the hate caucus is a real thing that has been successfully monetized over the years.
These people will tune in for their two-minute hate and dutifully 'invest' in gold, donate money to phoney charities, buy jingoistic collectible memorabilia, order two-minute-hates on book, etc.

And every day that decent people hold their tongue and don't greet references to the ideas of Limbaugh, Coulter, Beck, et al. with the bemusement we hold for the ideas of Art Bell's program and the derision we reserve for the ideas of Fred Phelps, the hate caucus is given cover to indulge themselves guilt free. And those who feed upon them are given cover to continue posing as legitimate businesses.

Answer that honestly, and in the future I'll thank you to think before you speak.

I see that you don't understand the dual meanings of light, that it can imply illumination in the intellectual sense as well. Had you ever actually educated yourself, the dean's meaning would have been clear.

Since you're a troll, that's about all I have to say about that.

I hope the Pres at least gave them a biscuit and a pat on the head, pussies.

Yeah, except that the college president was right and she is a toxic hag.

Ah, yeah, clearly ignoring how your actions and associations are perceived by others is a winning strategy for the GOP.

Make sure to keep forging ahead with the most distasteful spokespeople you can find and alienating moderates. It's working really well.

If you are talking about the economy it's absolutely true. Changes in the economy take years to work themselves out. Bush's total corporate cronyism is just coming to fruition: a corporate class that whines at every imagined slight while they sit on mountains of cash that they will only use to hire non-Americans.

Let real conservatives decide if they need a bitter spinster with Marfan's syndrome who refuses to get married and substitutes booze for food on their side. Besides, she just says things to get paid and then spends it on buying her African American boyfriend crates of delicious authentic Memphis BBQ sauce.

I always get a kick out of this sort of comment. If she isn't saying things that are representative of the conservative viewpoint, why do conservatives reward her so richly for saying them?

You don't want to do that. Do you have any idea what sort of toxins that would release? Jesus, that's got global catastrophe written all over it. Better to keep it in one pile, where it's easier to store. One 55-gallon drum should be big enough.

this.

Trolling her would have been to invite her under the guise of discussing politics but really it was a symposium on the trans-gendered and the flyers list her as the key note speaker. That's trolling

Seriously. Trolling her would've been giving her the address to speak at and it being in a back-alley behind a dumpster somewhere.

This was the university president saying it's probably a bad idea to invite her since she's just a hatemonger and the student group listening to him and recinding the invitation. They didn't even let her waste the money on flying before telling her to GTFO
