"There are many people who can speak to the conservative point of view with integrity and conviction, but Ms. Coulter is not among them. Her rhetoric is often hateful and needlessly provocative-more heat than light-and her message is aimed squarely at the darker side of our nature."

While it appears they were pressured a bit, this was very well-said.

Diogenes: While it appears they were pressured a bit, this was very well-said.

Is appealing to someone's better nature really "pressure"?

Looks to me like they realized just how bad a visit from that total Coulter of a human being would look to the rest of campus and that it wouldn't win any hearts or minds. From there, it's a pretty sound decision to avoid alienating the people they hope to bring to their cause.

I mean, you'd have to be a complete Coulter to not realize that they made a good decision here.

Perhaps "pressure" is too strong. But I would hope the decision came more from better judgement than concern over appearances.

I'd love to see if Coulter would accept an invite as a comedian.

Pop quiz hot shot. It's the end of the world. The forces of darkness are closing in all around you. The chill winds of socialism, communism, fascism, and kenyanism are sweeping across the icy tundra of what had once been a land swathed in the green embrace of freedom. The cities have burned. The churches have burned. The streets are empty wastes. You are hungry, you are scared, you are hunted by the very government that should protect you. Alone, huddled in your last bunker with nothing but the rats and the few rounds of ammo you've scavenged, with the winter's winds howling at the door and the tattered remnants of your clothes hanging from your gaunt, starved body, which do you prefer: light, or heat?

Answer that honestly, and in the future I'll thank you to think before you speak.

"The College Republicans regret the controversy surrounding our planned lecture featuring Ann Coulter," they wrote in a statement announcing the cancellation. "The size and severity of opposition to this event have caught us by surprise and caused us to question our decision to welcome her to Rose Hill."

There's been a lot of this recently. I hope it continues.

Better judgement is not best judgement. Doing the things because of appearances is not the same as doing the right things because they are the right things, irrespective of how you are perceived.

Seriously. Trolling her would've been giving her the address to speak at and it being in a back-alley behind a dumpster somewhere.

This was the university president saying it's probably a bad idea to invite her since she's just a hatemonger and the student group listening to him and recinding the invitation. They didn't even let her waste the money on flying before telling her to GTFO

Nope. The real point was expressed by the College President:
'Disgust' was the word I used to sum up my feelings about those incidents. Hate speech, name-calling, and incivility are completely at odds with the Jesuit ideals that have always guided and animated Fordham.".

More to the point: Don't screw with Jesuits. Most Catholics know this. I predict bad things for the college's Republicans.

Young Americans for Freedom are really the bad ones, they just tend to infect the CR's via dual membership. I would be surprised if the YAF wing of the Fordham CR's invited Coulter and by the time the President found out, the non-YAF CRs were already trying to kill the invitation.

I remember going through college wishing YAF and Students for Democratic Society would get into a giant knife fight and kill each other off. It would have improved the campus political scene immensely.

I agree with this... but I always wonder if Coulter, Limbaugh, Savage, several others (not Boortz, who is a serious self-important asshole) studied the work of the great Andy Kaufman and are just people that are getting rich trolling very stupid people. A tiny fraction of the country watches Fox News, MSNBC, and other cable news pundit shows. A tiny faction. Something like two million people a night give or take watch Rachael Maddow and Sean Hannity, each.

There are ~300 million people in the country.

These pundits just get all the press...such as threads like this one about Ann Coulter every month. In the media, they become the defacto mouthpieces of their party. In reality, I think most Americans are far more moderate than any of these people.

I always get a kick out of this sort of comment. If she isn't saying things that are representative of the conservative viewpoint, why do conservatives reward her so richly for saying them?

I agree with this... but I always wonder if Coulter, Limbaugh, Savage, several others (not Boortz, who is a serious self-important asshole) studied the work of the great Andy Kaufman and are just people that are getting rich trolling very stupid people. I'd hazard a guess that at least one of them and maybe they all are. If it is to make money then it's brilliant.

Go watch the Andy Kaufman wrestling documentary. Coulter = Kaufman, the idiot hicks getting so angry at him are the conservatives that listen to her.

You nailed it. People always look at me like i'm crazy when I say Rush is a genius.
Also, Newt is an evil genius, Rick Santorum is just a retard that actually believes what he says.

Freudian_slipknot: Diogenes: While it appears they were pressured a bit, this was very well-said.

So being pressured into telling some they can't speak is a good decision now?

Sure she speaks in absolutes but I have never really heard her say anything hateful, if may be to the point or to garner attention for herself but that's just an attention whore.

If you have actual links that would be helpful, but then I rarely pay attention to these kinds of people they just say outrageous shiat to get press. Limbaugh is the worst and most idiotic of those kinds of people.

Coulter and Limbaugh both have the magic stick for trolling Liberals. They can say the most tarring, over-the-top ridiculous crap to bait the HuffPo readership and Facebook lights up like Christmas. Seriously, kids: you're getting trolled. Stop driving traffic to the stories about them, do your part to reduce their marketing buzz. In general, I follow the same MO with them as I do the Westboro Baptist Church: not even a page view.

Of course both of them are doing gangbusters at coddling scared, white, middle-aged men. If I hear another 50-something man describe her as "hot" or "sexy" I may actually refer them to my friend the psychiatrist.

Yes, I truly believe that it is a good idea that the President of Fordham University has forced the College Republicans to rescind Ann Coulter's First Amendment rights.

I especially liked the part where the College Republicans put Ann Coulter under house arrest and told her that she would be thrown into prison if she didn't stop writing books.

McShane said preventing Coulter from speaking would "counter one wrong with another," and made clear he would not forbid the CRs from having Coulter at the Jesuit University

Coulter is too astute for that. We had an equally hysterical person, Kate Obenshain, visit our college campus. She posted pictures of "oppression," including a gender neutral bathroom, a poster advertising a play that featured LGBT characters, and a pictures of someone who had drawn a mustache on her portrait on one of the many, many (90% unmolested) fliers on billboards. She took pictures of all of these and posted them to her Web site. She also claimed to have received tons of e-mails from LGBT students and alums "threatening" her. Of course, she did not provide pics of these e-mails.

Her main point of her speech: feminism has led to a rise of STDs. Yep.

Pocket Ninja: Pop quiz hot shot.

How have socialism, communism, fascism and kenyanism manage to change the climate? Anyway, you may be living in a nice warm but dark cave, in which care light would surely be more useful than heat.

steamingpile: Freudian_slipknot: Diogenes: While it appears they were pressured a bit, this was very well-said.

Limbaugh is the worst and most idiotic of those kinds of people.

badhatharry: VarmintWrangler: When others opinions dictate free speech it ceases to be free speech.

When did the university president become the government?

Universities used to be bastions of free speech. Now they are indoctrination camps.

Generally speaking, a university education should consist of a wide variety of subjects, gathered together for understanding and scrutiny, and then hosed down in a big frothy bath of critical thought. The outcome should be a citizen who knows a great deal of facts and theories across many disciplines and understands the difference between knowledge and belief. That individual should also have the ability to understand why he believes what he believes.

Specifically, Fordham is a private college. They can teach whatever they wish, in whatever manner they wish. If you do not care to learn what they have to teach, or if you object to the manner in which they teach it you may leave.

The Campus Republicans were thrilled to bring a celebrity to their event. They echo the ideas of their parents, and buy Coulter's brand of crazy, along with Beck, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, and the rest of the Fox News Machine. They eat it up. It is manna from heaven to them. It was only the University President saying, "No" that rescinded her invitation. They Campus Republicans are disappointed as they did so dearly hope to lick her boots.

I was thrilled when I saw him actually citing Jesuit beliefs. The entire point of Catholicism (as I was taught it) is social justice--championing the downtrodden and helping people in need, because that's what Jesus calls them to do. This dude saying it aloud just won some major brownie points from the world.

Whenever Ann Coulter speaks, the audience should bombard her with softly lobbed sweet rolls and chant: Essen, essen meinem K****. Mein K*** will nicht essen.

I think years as a fashion model damaged her purebred Collie brain and her anorexia has strayed to humanity at large. This is not a new opinion. It is long-standing. The braincase is too narrow, the biotch is retarded, her mind has become as narrow as her wrists.

Fashion models should at best be seen, not heard, and some of them should neither be seen nor heard.

To the list I add:

former child beauty contestants
former beauty queens
former debutantes, biotchy
former debutantes, dumb
equestrian atheletes
Log Cabin Republicans
former child stars (male and female)
right wing Jewish men who wear bowties
right wing Christians who wear ascots
gap-toothed hillbillies on welfare
gap-toothed hillbillies on meth
anybody who is an embarrassment to the People of WalMart Nation
reality show contestants (both sexes, especially if nicknamed by themselves)
stick insects who lunch
right wingers who brunch
prayer breakfast participants
anybody who is awake before breakfast
college Republicans in blackface
college Republicans in an oxygen-bearing atmosphere
toadies
Bill Kristol
other albino freaks, including monks
red-headed assasins
the Irish-Scots
right wing Irish
right wing Scots
witches
"reformed" witches, if Fundamentalist*
"reformed" alcoholics and druggies, if Fundamentalist*
"reformed" rockers and metal fans, if Fundamentalist*

*especially Pentecostals. Any religion which practices public confession of sins has the bad habit, as Jean-Paul Sartre pointed out, of confessins certain listed sins but not others that deviate from the publically acceptible norms of sinfulness. "Woe to you if you inquire after those other" sins, observes JP sagely. For example, that fellow rising to confess his taste for a little beer--biggest adulterer in town. The youth pastor who used to be a "rocker"--don't ask about pedophilia or it could get nasty. That church lady who tearfully confesses her marital failings--she's a nasty bull dyke and Super-Biotch.

If they ever do a remake of I Married a Witch as a horror movie rather than a romantic comedy, they should contact Coulter to play the Veronica Lake role.

Fark Rye For Many Whores: "How are these idiots still employed?"

Because the hate caucus is a real thing that has been successfully monetized over the years.
These people will tune in for their two-minute hate and dutifully 'invest' in gold, donate money to phoney charities, buy jingoistic collectible memorabilia, order two-minute-hates on book, etc.

And every day that decent people hold their tongue and don't greet references to the ideas of Limbaugh, Coulter, Beck, et al. with the bemusement we hold for the ideas of Art Bell's program and the derision we reserve for the ideas of Fred Phelps, the hate caucus is given cover to indulge themselves guilt free. And those who feed upon them are given cover to continue posing as legitimate businesses.

I don't like nazis but I want them to be able speak freely and I especially don't want them going underground and plotting stuff. The left despises Fox as news because of it's conservative lean yet absorbs like a sponge the left leaning spin coming from msnbc. If it wasn't for Fox, people would still think the American Embassy was attacked because of a dopey UTube video.
The left hates when someone like Ann Coulter speaks at a school but welcomes a Middle East person, too many to name, that calls for the destruction of Isreal with open arms.

He did.

Now, of course, we could go off on a dystopian tangent that paints a very dire and one sided picture. Or, we could go back to the root of what the metaphor was describing. The design and desire of a light bulb is the light. Heat is a byproduct of the process. A bulb that produces more heat than light would not be considered a good light bulb. It would be considered a heat lamp.

Following that logic then, and applying the heat/light dichotomy to her punditry. A speaker who creates more controversy than debate would not be a good representative of their brand.

nightbringerggz: david_gaithersburg: Coulter is a hateful and vile of a person as Pelosi or Reid.

If you listen to her when she's on the radio or TV it's pretty obvious that she avoids direct attacks or flat out hateful comments. Not that I'm apologizing for her. Her statements are nearly always overly simplistic and are derogatory, I just don't think she has any real malice behind them. For the most part I think she's a fraud, the statements she makes and the titles she chooses are marketing ploys to enrage you into buying her books.

She's a polemicist, and as such is deliberately inflammatory. I don't think she's a fraud, she just expresses her ideas in ways that are engineered to provoke. Judging by this thread, she's fairly successful in that respect.

Your lost in the darkness, everything you thought you knew and trusted is gone in what seems like a puff of smoke. As you try and find your way, the hot muggy night clings to you as shadows play tricks with your mind. You don't how this could have happened one minute you were riding a wave of 'unskewed polls' and the next you were dropped down this dark hole with no way to find your way back, but you do know there are others like you lost as well. Which would YOU prefer....light or heat?

Answer that honestly

what's childish about putting 3 children in the same category? all three are people that would better benefit society by not being a part of it.

This is why people don't take you guys seriously. Equating two elected congressman with a paid shill. I understand you guys hate those two but this just makes you look stupid.

Wait, so a paid shill somehow worse than someone in office who is entirely beholden to lobbyists? Which one of those has a more significant long term impact? Ann coulter who people ignore, or Pelosi and reid pushing for SOPA/PIPA/FISA? Is it really hard for you to understand *all* of them are bad? It's not a "less worse/more worse".

This is why people ignore you, because you fail to recognize this and act as if it's marginalized/extreme to recognize they all need to DIAF.

It seems to me that if they think Coulter's ideas are particularly vile and hateful, then the best thing to do is allow her to speak, so that other people will come to know those ideas as vile and hateful (see also: Westboro Baptist Church). Rather than engaging in suppression, engage in debate. Preventing Coulter from speaking (which was the goal of Fordham's president, regardless of his means or methods) only allows her to wrap herself in the cloak of a free-speech martyr.

Universities are places where all ideas should be fair game--even those that you find absurd or repellent. Because the world is filled with absurd and repellent ideas, and with people who promote them, and a good education should teach you to identify and evaluate such ideas and respond accordingly.

This thread hurts.
1. I cannot believe people STILL take Pocket Ninja seriously. PN is epic and funny as hell.
2. Fr McShane is awesome.
3. This is not an issue about 'free speech' since Fordham is a PRIVATE institution and Fr McShane had every right to speak out against the decision to have her speak there. She in no way reflects Fordham's values.

Also some context, Fordham had a rash of hate crimes last spring. The University is taking a very hard stance against any negative, demeaning, or hateful things as that is not only counterproductive but is in direct opposition to positive, constructive, intellectual thought and debate.

I guess my debate idea was meant for questions at the end kind of thing. I agree with you fully and thats what irks me with this president is that he didn't indulge in the idea of allowing his student body allow ideas in (like you said). This is Fordham, these aren't fingers in their ears homo-hating everything needs a cross on it Republicans. I went to a similar school and they were really about social equality. They probably just got the biggest name they could and wanted to engage her in discussion, not praise her as an authority figure.

It is absolutely not a first amendment issue, but I would consider it a free-speech issue. The university is entirely within its rights to bar any person from speaking there. Whether doing so (rather than encouraging open debate) is in keeping with the educational mission of the university is another matter.

That would be relevant if the University barred anyone from speaking there.

The president made it clear that he was not ordering anything like that, but recommending against having that bag-o-bones visit.

Nah. The issue is this: the Jesuits are the brains of the Catholic Church and there is nothing in the current Republican party that matches Catholic theology.

Well, except on social issues.

No, actually about the only two things the republican party matches the official line of the RCC on is abortion and birth control. The RCC hierarchy is pro-welfare, anti-death penalty and concerned about the poor over the wealthy. Really aside from one or two things the republicans and the RCC really aren't natural partners.
