I guess that it comes to on one hand, he really has a great visual style.

Say what you will about Hellboy and Helboy 2 (personally, I liked both), but those movies had, in my opinion, great visuals.

And on the other hand, I think he does it great when it comes to integrate personal and even mundane stories into fantastic backgrounds. I loved Pan's Labyrinth for that reason.

/Pacific Rim looks at least entertaining to me.

He has the kind of dark imagination that could bring back some of the feeling of magic to the movies.

If Nolan isn't doing anything, I'd go that way. He's used to making special effects driven dramas that give off a sense of deeper meaning.

Ok. Legitimate answer. These threads have been killing me with people unjustifiably shouting names of their favorite directors without thinking about the content.

I honestly cannot pick a director who I think can execute it well and manage fan expectations while putting up with Disney (pending on if they are hands on, if hands off I might say Cauron. He can manage big budget and the dichotomy of bleakness and hope. He saved the Potter film series IMO)

They'd honestly have to be nuts not to be knocking on Brad Bird's door. He has experience of doing big-budget movies, understands CG, has directed a massive budget live action movie with huge action shots, and has been critically and financially successful.

You know the worst, serious options? Michael Bay or Chris Columbus. They'll make sure it gets made, it'll make money, and be instantly forgettable dreck.

Sure, del Toro is involved in about 2 million projects right now, but it would be AMAZING to see his directing style (to say nothing of the amazing creature designs) implemented into the Star Wars universe.

David Yates, also did Hallows 1, Half-Blood Prince, Order of the Phoenix, and then a few small-time movies, but he did direct The Girl in the Café, which was really, really good.
