I think we've reached the Boat Point of this story, which is the point at which the entire thing has become so ridiculous that the only rational solution remaining is to gather everyone even tangentially involved, put them on a boat, sail it out into the middle of the Pacific, and sink it. Sink it deep.

She sounds like most of the country club Republicans I know: living spectacularly beyond their means, up to their ears in debt, marital infidelity is the norm, and willing to do almost anything to keep up appearances. Permeating all of this is the attitude that they are better than the unwashed lower classes (even though their net worth is less than most people on welfare) and that the rules that apply to everyone else do not apply to them. To hobnob with public figure of note, a general or a politician is like a wet dream, a confirmation of the fantasy that they are someone.

Losers, all of them.

Petraeus should have known better than to get mixed up in all of that.

According to the NYT, Jill and Scott Kelly treated the military guys to a lavish lifestyle, running up a huge debt in the process....

"The Kelleys were known for their lavish parties, with extravagant buffets, flowing Champagne, valet parking and cigars for guests from nearby MacDill Air Force Base"

"Records show that Ms. Kelley and her husband, a doctor, have been subject to a string of lawsuits over debts, according to a report in The Tampa Bay Times, which said the Kelleys owed a bank nearly $2.2 million, including attorney fees, on a building they own. They also ran a cancer charity, which appears to be defunct. A 2007 tax filing, the latest available, shows the charity raised $157,284 that year, but spent just $58,417 on program services..."

I interact with a fair amount of these people when representing them in divorce matters. The "living beyond their means" statement is very true. The majority of them live in great fear of the general public finding out how much money they don't have. That is the main reason why they have their divorce decrees sealed from public view (when most of us would do the same for privacy issues or to protect sensitive financial information.) Just a thought.

I'm STILL trying to figure out how this basic nobody managed to not only land a book contract but one that included the services of a ghost-writer. If you are a famous name and a publisher wants you to "write" a book, a ghost is almost a given. But what made Broadwell's name so worth having on the cover of "All in" that she got the cash for a book someone else wrote? Why not have had the ghost as the actual author? Something tells me Petraeus wasn;t the first famous and powerful man she slept with to get what she wanted.

Crazy narcissistic biatch, and probably so is Broadwell. You'd think that highly ranked military guys would have some training in avoiding people like this, but oh no, psychology is bullshiat--they're generals and they control the world. They have the weapons of mass destruction and the power to use them.

Well, they both just got a lesson in those little weapons of mass destruction--crazy people. Ruining everything, one person at a time. And then they (usually) just walk away.

While the origins of the seed money used to start the charity in 2007 are unclear, financial records reviewed by The Huffington Post reveal that the group spent all of its money not on research, but on parties, entertainment, travel and attorney fees.

Organized charities are what bored, rich women use to fund their social whirl.

Almost none of it ever goes to the needy.

You wanna help? See who needs help, find those motherf*ckers and hand them the sammiches, blankets and money in person. The odds of any other method working are slim.

Dammit, well, at the speed this mess is unraveling, I better come clean now before everyone hears about it on the news.

I was actually romantically involved with not only Broadwell and Kelley, but also with General Petraeus' bag-girl (kind of like a bagman for the mob, but she just carries cash from one fake charity to another) as well as recently outed Microsoft Exec Steven Sinofsky and his team of Hungarian Lavatory slaves. In addition, I served as part of the conduit passing messages from Allen (Paul Allen at Microsoft, not that other general dude) to his handlers in the Cirque del Soleil (who I believe are in fact a front for the International Monetary Fund) and handled instructions for his currency launderers in Zaire, Togo and Santa Fe. While I was never part of the actual conspiracy itself, I did receive a ceremonial back rub from a masked, naked Karl Rove and was instructed in the Hidden Secrets and told what was actually buried in Steve Job's tomb. I also baked a cake for Helen Thomas, but that was just for her birthday and wasn't really connected to anything else.

No book deals, no talk show appearances, none of it. Maybe rendition is an option here. I can't think of a better reason to use it.

And in court documents filed by Kelley's sister Natalie Khawam, she name-drops both Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island -- who both have ties to a Providence, RI, lawyer/Democratic fundraiser who loaned a whopping $300,000 to Khawam.

A spokesman for Whitehouse today that lawyer, Gerald Harrington, has dated and "may have been engaged to Khawam." Harrington has not returned a call seeking comment.

Also filed in that court case by Khawam is a letter from Whitehouse, who like Kerry is a Democrat.

That letter was written to Harrington, who has been a fundraiser for Kerry and other Democrats out of Rhode Island. Harrington, according to Khawam's federal bankruptcy filing earlier this year in Florida, gave her a personal loan of $300,000.

Wow, I really feel better after getting that off my chest.

Mentat: Generation_D:

Why is the head of our armed forces and CIA palling around with these bimbos.

How you act when no-one's looking tells a lot.

It sounds like a lot of brass are palling around with these bimbos.

You know, during the Cold War people would be looking for a Soviet plot here, and bringing down a DCI would be a Big Farking Deal. Are y'all sure the petty little soap opera you're reading is the real truth? Or have things degenerated so much that the CIA can be beheaded by an airhead just because it can, to nobody's benefit?

Personally I blame the antisemites. Whenever things like this go down in America you know there has to be a jewhater in the woodpile somewhere, carrying big water if not pulling the strings. And it's always the case that somehow this will turn out to be bad for Israel, even if that's not really the whole point.

Is it any coincidence that, according to the Wikipedia article on her:

"Jill Kelley was born Gilberte Khawam on January 1, 1975. Kelley's family, which includes an identical twin sister, Natalie Khawam,[8] and a brother David Khawam,[9] are Lebanese-American Maronite Catholics who immigrated to the United States from Jounieh, Lebanon in the mid-1970s.[2]"

Lebanese Maronites: historical antisemites who had to pal around with Israel (and the CIA) in the late '70s & '80s because nobody else around there liked them, and always resented having to rely on Those People from deseperation. They even had to play ball on Syria's team a few times because Syria gave them no choice. But they're still powerful in the ruling classes of Lebanon and the region, a key strategic asset because of Lebanon's very useful coastline, and with all the current reshuffling of all the pinocle decks in the Middle East of course they've got to do all they can to keep straightening their kids' teeth and banging their Filipina maids. So it's hard to figure from here exactly what they could be up to, but strange clannish hill tribes like that are always up to something.

Keep in mind too that since the Assads' rise the Christian minorities in the area have been significant coalition partners for the Alawi "heretics," along with the Druze and the Shia: with their money and power the Maronites have a decisive role to play somehow. So you can count on it that somewhere in this scandal there's a Gemayel or a Chamoun with a very busy Gmail account.

Remember, you heard it here first!

One would hope that a flag grade officer would have teh judgement to keep himself separate from the "grifters" and not need somebody to do it for him.

Unfortunately most Flag Grade officers also have a political mentor ( a member of congress looking out for his career). so it hard to separate the two. . Most Flag grade officers are completely politicized when they get their first star.

The only Generals I knew who managed to keep the grifters and politicians some what at bay were former Marine Corps Commandants Gray and Mundy.

Link

And in court documents filed by Kelley's sister Natalie Khawam, she name-drops both Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island -- who both have ties to a Providence, RI, lawyer/Democratic fundraiser who loaned a whopping $300,000 to Khawam.

A spokesman for Whitehouse today that lawyer, Gerald Harrington, has dated and "may have been engaged to Khawam." Harrington has not returned a call seeking comment.

Khawam claimed in a July 12 letter to her estranged husband that she took their now 4-year-old son "on vacation last year to Martha Vineyard," where their son and "I had a great time at the DSCC [Democratic Senate Campaign Committee] event

"Sen. John Kerry asked if [her son] would be coming again this year," Khawam wrote. "[Their son] was a superstar at the DSCC last year."

A spokeswoman for Kerry - who the Washington Post reports is being considered as President Obama's next secretary of defense -- in an email comment wrote, "Senator Kerry's friend Jerry Harrington introduced him to his girlfriend (Natalie) at a DSCC event."

"Derry Gerry," Whitehouse wrote. "I am excited to hear that you and [Khawam's son] may be coming to the Family Clambake. That would be terrific! All the best wishes, Sheldon."

I couldn't have articulated this better. So much this.

This will all make sense when it is revealed that Jill is actually a Madam. You think that military men want to go to parties in "high society" Tampa for the conversation?

High society Tampa. Heh.

The Washington Post reports that, according to a military officer who served on Gen. Petraeus' staff, Kelley was a "'self-appointed' go-between for Central Command officers with Lebanese and other Middle Eastern government officials.

Wait! So she was carrying on a Lebanese relationship in addition to the two generals? This just gets richer with each passing day.

Why, oh WHY, has not one single person, not ONE made reference to Jill Kelley's name being strikingly similar to a porn star's?! A porn star with her own production company?! And she's involved in a SEX SCANDAL!!

What the hell is wrong with the news today?!

Or more to the point... Even on FARK there is not a single reference. Did I slip into Bizzaro World by accident?

I've seen several references in different threads, mostly of the "Do not GIS Jill Kelly at work (VERY NSFW)" variety.

This is monumental idiocy. Moral police run wild.

Are we really farking serious, as a society, that we're going to sh-tcan military commanders for adultery, or hints of adultery? Do you know what these guys do? They kill people and break things. That's their job. Applying force. Taking risks. Scheming, cunning, assassinations.

What's next? Firing research scientists for adultery? Benching NFL running backs for adultery? Firing SEALS for adultery?

Monumental idiocy.

I look at fundamentalist Islamic societies and they are anti-woman and anti-science, and place value on ability to recite the Koran. This means the societies will regress. We place a premium on science and letting chicks do what they want, so they can contribute to society too. We reap what we sow, getting richer, more advanced societies. They reap what they sow, getting poorer, more backwards societies.

We will reap what we sow if we sic the moral police on our military commanders.

Monumental, rampant, earthshaking idiocy. It's like I'm watching a moronic sitcom when I'm listening to the media commentary. In a sitcom, I think, this is moronic, people don't behave like that in real life. But people are behaving like that in real life in this situation.

I'm really stunned at the earthshaking idiocy.

Yeah, but if half the people on this planet lived the way they SAY they live, we'd need less lawyers and guns and people playing army.

Not sure if your just a troll or serious. I'll assume your serious.

First, adultery is a punishable offense under the UCMJ, and it's been that way for a long time. I don't know why thats the law, I can only presume thats theres a very good reason for keeping it on the books. (If it's the case of the "moral police" taking over the DoD, I would agree you.)

Second, the whole adultery thing only applies to Allen at this point, since Petraeus is retired. The real problem with Petraeus isn't the fact he had sex with someone not his wife (his wife is probably the only one who cares), it's the fact he did it illicitly and could potentially have been blackmailed when confronted with the affair. Fortunately, Uncle Sam found out before someone else did, and he resigned (as he should have.)

Otherwise, I would tend to agree with you, this whole story is ridiculous compunded on ridiculous.

I've had about the same reaction myself. Was talking with a retired AF guy at work, and he was going on & on about how his inability to control himself proved that Petraeus couldn't be trusted. I asked how come Eisenhower managed to not spill the beans about D-Day and the H-bomb when he was boinking his driver for years...

No response. Come on, people, we've gotta learn to compartmentalize. No, I wouldn't want my daughter marrying this guy, but there's a lot of guys I wouldn't want my daughter to marry that I am very glad are able & willing to commit violence on my behalf.

I just don't get it...

toraque: Dammit, well, at the speed this mess is unraveling, I better come clean now before everyone hears about it on the news.

Wow, I really feel better after getting that off my chest.

Line forms to the right, fella.

cryinoutloud: davidab: I agree with you except the part about "the power to use them." Usually some form of authorization is necessary to use WMDs. Everything else you said is SPOT ON.

You picked THAT out of all that? It's on their resume--"have access to the red button of destruction."

I woke up this morning wishing death on a few people in my past, knowing that they will never suffer one bit for everything they did to ruin my life, and this whole story just reminds me of that. You'd think a guy like Petraeus would have learned that one lesson--TRUST NO ONE--but since we're all puny humans, we do like to trust others and confide in them. And farkers like these two women are right there to take advantage of it all, then walk away pretty much unscathed when the whole place burns down.

I hate these kinds of people with a passion, in case you can't tell.

Access to the red button doesnt mean they get to use it without presidential (or similar) authorization. Yes I can tell... Have you seen the movie "God Bless America?"
