Not being a fan of musicals but being bombarded with advertizing for Cats, Phantom, Les Mis, and every other musical that had a run at the Pantages in Toronto over the last 25 years years I just assumed ALW was responsible for all musical theater.

That's perfectly understandable. It also opened right when ALW was carpet bombing the West End so anyone could make that assumption.

It's so weird to see Helena Boham Carter in a role where she plays a slightly demented character while wearing a ton of face make up and elaborate costuming.

I'm looking forward to this as much as The Hobbit. December has some great movies coming out.

The little bit of Crowe singing in this trailer is the first negative thing that I've seen about the movie. I hope that's just sung for that one song, but his voice has no resonance whatsoever. Everything else is awesome, but Javert is just so critical to it (all of my favorite pieces from the musical involve Javert in some way)...

He sounds like someone stuck between a baritone and a tenor deciding to force himself into a higher register.

I cannot wait to see this.

Had the good fortune of seeing Les Mis on Broadway three times - first time, I was only 9 years old and was absolutely captivated. The songs still bring tears to my eyes and goosebumps to my skin.

It is, without question, my favorite musical of all time.

And having watched this and other trailers, I cannot wait until it's out. Even managed to convince the wife to go. I just hope she's not disappointed - she's never seen it before and musicals aren't normally her thing...

I saw the 25th Anniversary version when it swung through Philly last time. I shared my tissues with the stranger next to me as we both bawled our eyes out.

Before it started, the people on the other side of me kept asking how long the show was, asked how much was left to go at intermission then left and didn't come back for the second half. My new crying buddy and I couldn't understand how you'd just leave half way through.

I, for one, look forward to crying throughout the movie...

She's definitely been auto-tuned. There was a behind the scenes video posted online a few months ago which featured her raw singing and it was awful. Shrill, thin and off pitch.

But that doesn't really matter. So much post production work is done to the audio to integrate the singing into the separately recorded orchestras and to get it all sounding good on crappy movie theater speakers that there would be little point in getting someone of Netrebko's caliber. And after all, you want people who are good actors.

I hope they don't cut Beggars at the Feast, though they probably will. I hope they move it around a bit if their concern is the pacing near the end of the movie, though I'd argue that it's not as egregious a problem as it seems, given the intent/meaning of the song.

Mostly I just can't wait to see what Sacha Baron Cohen does with the "there goes a jew..." line, because I know it'd be genius.

This one was done differently. The vocals were recorded on set at the same time as the acting. I am sure there will be studio touch-ups but the actors are actually acting and singing at the same time. Usually the vocals are done before filming and the actors have to lip synch to their previous recordings. The director decided to do it this way because there is so much power in the songs and the story and he didn't want the actors to make acting decisions months ahead of time.

That's probably why even more manipulation than normal will happen in post-production with the audio. That singing has to be integrated with the orchestra, foley, and then everything rebalanced and mixed into surround sound.

And given that actors have to rerecord lines that didn't come through clearly on the set (ADR), I'm sure a good bit of the singing was completely redone after the fact (or at least a lot of patching).

My only point, is that the singing you hear in the movie doesn't represent the actors' real singing abilities -- it's just the reality of making a musical film.

I am going to be crying like a baby when I see this. "I Dreamed a Dream" Hits so close to home . I love the song but its so autobiographical it leaves a mark.

Fark you, abridged books are for people who don't know how to read.

There is zero shame in going for an abridged Les Mis. The unabridged version is roughly as long as the Lord of the Rings + the Silmarillion and focuses a lot on the history and culture of really minor characters and Parisian locations. Throw in that in English it's a translation that loses some of the beauty in the language itself, and you're not getting a lot of value from extra words.
