THIS is the one you'll like the most. Very few changes from the novel. over 3 and a half hours long. Well acted. Yep, over 50 years old (this is the 58 version). Still, this is what you seem to be asking for.

Also, I would think Hugo would he happy to have some of his message about the human spirit be presented in any form that people would want to process it in. When you're in exile, your porbably not that picky.

Speaking of which, what an incredibly lame ending. The "bad guy" can't decide between Lawful Neutral and Lawful Good, so he kills himself? Hugo might as well have made a genuine deus ex machina ending and had a shark jump out of the Seine and eat Javert.

I understand that a lifetime with this musical, and most of my lifetime with the 10th anniversary special, has created a healthy bias. But seeing as Anne and Hugh have the proper chops to pull it off, I'm pissed that the people who 'look' like they could be the characters aren't more solid. No one's telling Russell Crowe how to sing, or much of anything, at this point. Why cast a guy like that? There's plenty of examples of his singing voice. It's not Javert or anyone in a Broadway production really.

The fact that I was excited by Russell Crowe the actor in the character's role makes the failure so much more complete. Cuz it means that's what a casting director thought about him and 'Manders.

Yeah... Mrs. Pilates is hardly ever reduced to a blubbering, tearful mess, it's one of the things I like most about her. However, Valjean's Death gets her every single time.

As other's have said, I'm curious to see how Russell Crowe handles the role of Javert. Javert has always been my favorite character, ever since I first saw the show on Broadway in 1996. I'm a baritone/bass myself, and baritones rarely get such pivotal roles. Javert is such an absolutist, and his descent (literally and figuratively) is my favorite scene in the show. I have no doubt Russell Crowe can knock it out of the park dramatically... I really and truly hope he can do it justice vocally as well.

Nah, I'm kind of with you here. I initially thought "RC is perfect for this kind of character, and I know he's got his own band, so I'm sure he can sing well enough." Then I got to this part of the trailer and went, "Oh God, no. Not for one of the MALE LEADS."

Failure? We haven't seen it. I too am pretty worried about Crowe. benefit of the doubt is given though since the rest of the show looks solid as hell.

Seyfried looks fine and as for "autotune"? [Citation needed]. You would think that having one of these actors auto-tuned would defeat the purpose of having them sing on set and making that a focal point of your behind the scenes featurettes.

I really liked it.
Then all the gays jumped on it and made a musical out of it.
