they only got legalized divorce in the last decade or so... and a large segment of their population still thinks it was cool that thousands of people were rounded up and killed in the 80s for having different political opinions because at least the trains ran or time.

I'm just happy that Pinochet's secret bank accounts were found before he died. A lot of fascist Chilean a-holes always liked to say that even though he killed a lot of people, he did it selflessly for the country and that he wasn't corrupt like the others.

Damn. I was almost hoping that Chile would have super-liberal policies on abortion, so that this guy could be stupid like that girl in Georgia who thought that Australia had a male president who followed biblical values rather than a female PM who lives in sin with a man who is not her husband.

Oh, but you know what Chile does have? Privatized social security. Or rather they did until it went belly up and the country had to sell off everything that wasn't nailed down. Funny thing, it's practically the identical social security privatization plan that Paul Ryan wants to implement here. That's right, Ryan's plan is inspired by the Pinochet regime.

Abortion isn't outright banned in Argentina, they allow for life of the mother exceptions. Also, they have gay marriage.

I hope not! That's my retirement spot. Absolutely gorgeous with friendly people, friendlier than Spain even.

The Southern Cone countries are truly astounding. Like a 1950's California, wide open spaces and perfect weather. The seafood in Chile is also good in addition to the beef and wine. Uruguay has a former Swiss colony right in the middle so lots of wine and cheese.

Piriapolis, someday.

So he was a carpetbagger.

seems like the most unapologetically ridiculous teabaggers here in Alaska are the ones that have lived here less than a decade. gets a bit tiresome listening to them.

best part is most of them have like 5+ kids and all home-school (which is subsidized by the state).

remember. we have the PFD here. 5+ kids + 2 parents x $1000-2000 (or one time Palin made it $3500.) each. they really need to make it at least like a 5 year residency requirement.

don't recall hearing about a single one them refusing it.

I knew people who skipped the country for Belize when Clinton got elected, others who bought land there, "for when the persecution comes," They were all big on how they'd be there set up in Belize so that the rest of us could flee when Clinton started persecuting conservative Christians or something. They tried to talk the rest of us into moving there too.

Why he's in for a rude surprise. Guess what, conservative morons? Making abortion illegal doesn't decrease abortion rates. Easy access to contraception does. So choose which one you'd rather have. If you choose the former, you're not really pro life.

Gay marriage is legal in Argentina. And they said fark you to Spain and nationalized their oil.

They have kickass beef, and along Chile and Uruguay they are the most 'European' of the Latin American countries.

Interesting! My next door neighbor is the son of a Ukranian who rapidly emigrated to Argentina just days before the end of WW2. He has some museum quality art in his house. I knows me more than one blue-eyed Argentinian.

The word Chile (the fruit) comes from the Aztec word chilli, which was their word for the fruit.

The word Chile (the country) comes from an Incan word, but there's no consensus on which word.
