His followup book, C Street goes into much deeper detail about The Family/Fellowship's involvement in Uganda. Sharlett even scored some interviews with Bahati and Museveni.

American gays, the entire 3% of our population that is gay, should go over there and kiss outside the border. That worked wonders on the minimum wage kids at the chicken place.

Even for people that don't like homosexuals, that's a terrible gift.

Jail sentences are also mandated for people who simply know someone who is gay and not reporting them to the police within 72 hours.

I had seen this elsewhere on the net:

Fun fact: The chief sponsor of the "Kill the Gays" bill is a Ugandan legislator named David Bahati (here's an article). David Bahati is also a core-member of an American evangelical christian political cult-thing that calls itself the Family.
The Family has poured millions of dollars into Uganda, backing Bahati, sponsoring prayer breakfasts, hosting Christian youth leadership conferences. They've basically spent the last decade evangelizing & radicalizing the entire Ugandan population.
There's no knowing how deeply involved The Family is in this one particular piece of legislation, but given the players on the field I'd say they're in deep.
Process that for a second, a tiny cabal of American evangelical Christian millionaires and their hand-picked counterparts in Uganda have created a bill that would authorize the legal execution of gay people for being gay.
If the Taliban tried this shiat we'd have already drone-striked their homes into green glass.

Catholic 41.9%
Church of Uganda (Anglican) 35.9%

Odd combination... Anglicans are generally split on the homosexual issue, but I don't know enough abut practices there.

I wouldn't be against holding all help based on human rights issues because of this law.

That split tends to be:

Western Anglicans - Gays are ok
Non-Western (including African) Anglicans - Kill all the gays!

The church as a whole is split, but that doesn't mean the Anglican church within Africa is split. They're not. They're pretty much all full hard-on for the gay bashing.

The Family may not need to be in "deep". Adequate indoctrination in irrational anti-homosexual behaviour may be sufficient for such legislation to emerge independently from the indoctrinated group.

I just read about this on BBC, and it was clear that the death penalty was NOT going to be allowed.

"Evangelical" and "Fundamentalist" are orthogonal concepts.

Evangelical means someone who wants to convert others. Fundamentalist means someone who interprets a text literally, though often they are most passionate about ideas they only imagine are written down.

In other words, what you were going for was "American fundamentalists are gonna be jealous." Which is also untrue as they generally want to oppress homosexuals, not murder them. But hey, it's nice that demonizing the opposition is something the extreme left and right have in common.

Great documentary: The Worlds Worst Place To Be Gay

Gay UK male goes to Uganda (orientation kept secret) to report. He'd expected the usual disparity between the harsh rhetoric and what people will actually say personally for a camera- a more moderate, edited version.

No. He was shocked . EVERY SINGLE PERSON, every age group & demographic. Ordinary friendly young people on the street: "I hate them, they should be arrested and imprisoned and killed, I would kill my own son if he were gay."

What passes for a moderate: "I'm not gonna kill anyone myself, that's illegal. But fortunately the government can imprison them FOR us, so I don't HAVE to kill people myself."
