It's called plausible deniablility. Do we need to know right now? Then for the love of God, don't tell us until after the election. Dirty? Hell yeah. Legal? Yup.

Supposedly they had been investigating him for a while, but they didn't have any proof until his biographer went nuts on the other woman and she called the FBI.

My favorite from the whole thing was the guy claiming he heard about it from "someone at Breitbart" back in October.

Um, sure, "someone at Breitbart" had this story and sat on it. I guess they're in the President's pocket too.

If I knew Petraeus was having an affair, I would have voted for Romney!

2012-11-13 06:31:10 PM
Jebus, the FBI was not investigating Petraeus for having an affair, they were investigating threatening emails, which is their job, which led them to the affair and they quickly determined that classified information was not at risk but continued to investigate to see if Petraeus was in any way behind the threatening emails which it appears he was not.

The FBI does not care who is sleeping with who, they are not the Vice and Virtue Police.

I haven't heard anything about a security breach - so the whole story was that some retired general wet his noodle, and now it's that Obama didn't know about it.

Somebody needs to lighten up and get laid.

Either it's unbelievably fortuitous timing that the FBIs protocol just happened to be timed such that this broke immediately after the election, or someone in the White House thought so to. Like how whenever my parents came home I was on a study break.

Oh and don't forget:

- Obama is TOTALLY out of the loop for something like the Osma Bin Laden mission. They didn't even ask his permission for it.

- However Obama is totally in charge in deciding how much and what kind of security is deployed to every embassy and consulate around the world.

shiat crap happens all the time. If you start investigating something you don't first go telling everyone what you are doing especially the boss of the person being investigated.

It would have been a distraction at best, and I simply see no reason to assume that this investigation wasn't revealed in its natural course.

Obama totally changed the protocols. All investigations must tread water in October, unless said investigation makes libtards look good. it's probably in an executive order.

According to one source, it is long-standing FBI policy for the FBI not to brief Congress or the White House in the middle of a criminal probe that does not involve a security threat.

Where people get this idea that somehow Obama is privy to everything that goes on in the entire government at all times is beyond me. Or Congress, for that matter. In the middle of a House session the phone rings, "Uh, Mr. Speaker? Agent Brown at the FBI. We're investigating John Johnson over on Maple Street for watching 'Red Dawn' six times this week. Just to keep you up to date, sir." Because otherwise when Johnson runs amok and shoots 14 people at the Kentucky State House, they'll get accused of keeping it a secret that they were investigating him.

It's going to come to that. Government, which already moves at a sub-glacial pace, is going to slow down even more, because the FBI and other departments are going to have to tell the upper tiers EXACTLY what they're doing at all times and ask if they should proceed and who else needs to be told. Does the President need to know who is being investigated, and for what, and when and why? Evidently so, because for them to decide he doesn't LOOKS SUSPICIOUS.

Is it REALLY that fortuitous?

Like, I kind of get that it is weird for any scandal to come out right after an election..... but do you REALLY think that General Petreaus banging his biographer would have altered the election?

Petreaus rose up under BUSH after all. It isn't like he is some Obama crony. And again, it's him cheating on his wife. What does that have to do with the election?

What I'm wondering is why anybody gives a fark about Patraeus having an affair. It's not like he was a "Family Values™" politician. There's no hypocrisy involved.... Did it affect his job in some way I'm missing.

/Haven't actually been paying attention to the "scandal" so maybe I missed something, like how she's a Russian spy?

Look at the bright side: We haven't seen Romney's face or heard his voice since his concession speech.

I didn't know about it, so it's possible.
I also don't see what difference it makes. Do the job I pay you for. What, or who, you do on your time is up to you.

Generally, we don't want people in those positions to have scandals that can be used as a blackmail tool by spies.

So 'head of CIA' + affair = lost job.

Bill Frist: Like, I kind of get that it is weird for any scandal to come out right after an election..... but do you REALLY think that General Petreaus banging his biographer would have altered the election?

At minimum it would have been a distraction. At absolute worst it would have been, fairly or not, an indication of what the NCAA would call "lack of institutional control." Having it come out immediately after the election after months of investigation implies that the people who should have known must have known earlier and withheld it. Again, fairly or not. Just like the plan for the new space station coming out Wednesday morning. Maybe it's just a bizarre coincidence, but the timing suggests they were sitting on it. And that's fine. I don't expect the government to publicize all their secrets, but "That's classified" is a much better answer than "Hmmm, well, no one told me..."
