Ladies and gentlemen...

There's a reason for advanced care planning and directives. 99.995% of people who end up like this will never be like this.

Ask yourself what you'd want your life to be like. If you view being cared for 24/7, while defecating and urinating onto yourself constantly or into a bag, being fed through a tube in your stomach that frequently leaked or caused skin infections, and constantly having to be treated through numerous respiratory infections, urosepsis, and skin breakdowns/ulcerations is worth it.

Some people don't view that as a life they'd want to live.

This.

It's nice that we are able to keep people alive and all, but you have to wonder if it should really be used to keep people around for a decade. After which they can get a massive amount of expensive gear to tell people (who need to be paid) that they would like their ass wiped.

Sometimes you need to let someone go. As wise men once said:
- The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
- Or the one.

All that time, effort and money could be put to so much better use...

I would be happy if Jerry had no emotions whatsoever. Because the thing of it is, once you go down that road -- here's Jerry, this emotional being, cooped up for three hundred years with no one to talk to, none of the socialization, the emotional growth that comes from contact with other emotional beings...

Amen. That's my reason for having an end of life directive. I've watched too many people not allowed to move on. And that's both the ones on life support and the ones standing around unable to say good-bye and grieve.

To be a debbie downer, this is the exact same Dr. Owen who was tricked by one of those "facilitated communication" charlatans into thinking one of his coma patients could type and write about a year ago. Quite a few news outlets ran the story about the coma patient's "miraculous recovery" until someone figured it out, and they issued retractions.

I don't know about this doc and this patient, but I do know (anecdotally of course) that there is over diagnosis of persistent vegetative states. My wife's sister was in a horrible car accident about 25 years ago. They were convinced she was in a persistent vegetative state, but it turns out that she has gotten parts of herself back over the last quarter century. She can carry on a conversation, though she can be a bit difficult to understand at times. She has a sense of humour. She is bored out of her tree, since the nursing home she is confined to doesn't provide a lot of stimulation, and she doesn't seem to trust the staff enough to actually talk to them. She only talks to family, don't know why.

On the minus side? She still has a feeding tube. She is half paralysed. She is blind in one eye. One side is basically dead, and there is not enough money in Wisconsin's state budget to pay for something more than basic keeping her living kind of care. She uses diapers or a bedpan. She will never live on her own again.

Given all that, my wife is still convinced that in the same situation she would have preferred to have died, rather than live out 25 years like her sister has, gradually regaining conscious thought but never being able to really live again. The sister was only 29 at the time and had no advanced directives, living will and all that. She lost everything, including her son, who could never stand to see his mom like that (he was in the accident too at age 9). The son died this past spring.

I'm not convinced she is much enjoying life either.

Situations with this "vegetative" patient (assuming this guy is for real) are definitely illuminating in terms of brain function, brain activity and how little we really know, but tell us nothing about life as an experience.

DING DING DING!!!!! Winner winner chicken dinner.

She was the original case that set the tone for the whole "persistent vegetative state" court precedence.
It was a massively discussed (often loudly and heatedly) case.
Also, when her body finally gave out the resulting brain forensic exam shed a new light on the function and importance of the thalamus as a central part of conscious existence and thought.

I hafta say, if I ended up in that state but still experienced REM sleep, I'd like to stay alive even if I can only "live" while I'm asleep and dreaming. I have narcolepsy so my dreams are as vivid as anything when I'm awake and feel as real as life--which isn't common I don't think. So. Maybe I'm weird for wanting that.
