Ladies and gentlemen...

There's a reason for advanced care planning and directives. 99.995% of people who end up like this will never be like this.

Ask yourself what you'd want your life to be like. If you view being cared for 24/7, while defecating and urinating onto yourself constantly or into a bag, being fed through a tube in your stomach that frequently leaked or caused skin infections, and constantly having to be treated through numerous respiratory infections, urosepsis, and skin breakdowns/ulcerations is worth it.

Some people don't view that as a life they'd want to live.

I am pretty sure people in that state do not care one way or another.

Humanity has a duty to prolong the biological function of any meat sack.  It's not like the resources could be better put to use.

This.

It's nice that we are able to keep people alive and all, but you have to wonder if it should really be used to keep people around for a decade. After which they can get a massive amount of expensive gear to tell people (who need to be paid) that they would like their ass wiped.

Sometimes you need to let someone go. As wise men once said:
- The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
- Or the one.

All that time, effort and money could be put to so much better use...

I'd be honestly curious if someone would go insane from that. Can't communicate, can't feel anything, can't move? Hell, I'd go crazy after a few hours.

Funny,
I reserve this appellation to those too proud to avail themselves (or their families) of public aid should the necessity arise.

I would be happy if Jerry had no emotions whatsoever. Because the thing of it is, once you go down that road -- here's Jerry, this emotional being, cooped up for three hundred years with no one to talk to, none of the socialization, the emotional growth that comes from contact with other emotional beings...

Actually these days, the proper term is "disability recipient"

Amen. That's my reason for having an end of life directive. I've watched too many people not allowed to move on. And that's both the ones on life support and the ones standing around unable to say good-bye and grieve.

"Asking a patient something important to them has been our aim for many years. In future we could ask what we could do to improve their quality of life. It could be simple things like the entertainment we provide or the times of day they are washed and fed."

Or more importantly "Would you like to die???"

Seems legit.
But doesn't some researcher claim this every few years, only to have it be refuted by ten other a few months later?
"You asked a series of 50 questions and half fit your theory and half were completely off."

Yeah, meant to address this as well. There's been a LOT of dis proven studies of this nature. And even then, this might only be true for this one guy. Which might give some very bad false hope for a lot of others.
