Donald Fehr is singlehandedly responsible for killing two sports league's seasons.

Why is this man still living.

I know a great number of Farkers are big into fights and goonery as an integral part of their hockey enjoyment experience.

For those who value speed, passing and positional play, above that, however, there's an excellent league out there..

And today's announcement(s) make it clear that the "boys" (or at least the Flames and Leafs) have noticed.

Season's ticket price? $60

No sorry but...I can't let this one pass.

Blaming Donald Fehr for baseball's work stoppages? I can understand that. Blaming him for the NHL owners AND commissioner being a bunch of certified asshats who shouldn't be owning anything more than a lemonade stand in Alaska during the winter? No, he gets a pass from me on this one.

So much this!

The owners killed a season to get everything they wanted 8 years ago and it worked. And here they are doing it again.

This is Gary Buttman's 3rd work stoppage during his term! There should be no surprise about what's going on.

The cities that are helping to fund the bulk of these teams stadiums need to start writing clauses into the agreements allowing them to recoup lost revenue when these jackass owners do something like this for any sport. NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, MLS, WNBA. If the owners, who pass off most of the financial risk of building stadiums off to the cities and municipalities under the threat of moving a team, want their funding, there needs to be real penalties for them doing something to cause loss of revenue by that publically funded venue. When the owner willingly locks out players, they are responsible for the loss of revenue. Part of the argument for cities funding arenas is the revenue they bring to nearby businesses and jobs they provide. If the owners go back on their part of they agreement they should be held accountable.

/thats my 2 cents.

Fark 'em all. My goal is to have fun with my family and watch great hockey action. I have a new minor league team starting up within a couple miles of my house, the St. Charles Chill.

So I could either:

A. Pay upwards of $80 for a decent seat, drive to downtown St. Louis, pay for parking, walk a mile in the cold, pay insane prices for concessions, and watch a hockey team that has never won the Stanley cup.

or

B. Pay upwards of $20 for ideal seats, drive two miles, get free parking essentially at the door, and watch a hockey team that, admittedly, has never won the Stanley cup.

If I were Don Fehr would I troll the owners into saying that, if there's no deal made by the spring, then the players wouldn't consider negotiating about the start of the 2013-14 season at all? Or even not negotiate at all until 2015?

Wonder how the owners would react to that?

So you're saying Bettman has no power? I'm pretty sure Gooddell, Stern, and Selig have a lot more say than you believe Bettman has. There's a reason those sports don't mess around and screw up as much as hockey.

Don't blame the Players or the Union.
The league wants them to sign up for drastic pay cuts OR ELSE.

How many of you would agree to it if your boss came to you and demanded you sign a new contract for less money.

Raise your hand if you would volunteer to take a Pay Cut so we all know who the damn liars are

A lot of players have gone to Europe to play this year, including Ovie and Malkin (who are kind of a big deal, you know). That's a bit of leverage, I'd say.

There's also been efforts to declare the lockout illegal in parts of Canada (Alberta and I think Quebec).

Other than that... I don't know if there's anything that's realistic that could be done short of arbitration or mediation sessions.

Didn't decertifing the NFLPA and NBAPA in the US accomplish some league concessions last year?

there is, and that's not to cave in. Believe me, this sucks, I just moved 1,000 miles away from Boston and at least I had sports to look forward to until I assimilated into the area. Said area is Atlanta, so I wasn't getting any live (NHL) hockey anyways but at least I had Center Ice to look forward to.

the owners all have other ventures to keep their Scrooge McDuck vaults filled, but if the whole year goes up in dust they will feel that sting eventually and hopefully try to make it a two way street

Hey, that racist doesn't speak for hockey fans.

I hate basketball because it's boring as fark, not because of who plays it. How can you get excited about your team scoring when there's another basket every 30 seconds? How can you stay interested in a game that's usually not decided until the final 2 minutes (which seem to take a half-hour in real time to complete)? How can you take seriously a sport that doesn't even enforce its own rules (eg. traveling) especially for star players?

2012-11-13 05:21:57 PM
F*ck both sides with a splinter filled hockey stick. No matter who "wins" this crap, they're going to expect the fans to pick up the bill...and yet none of us are allowed at the table.

What sucks is that I know that I'll be their chump again. Like an a used wife, I'll be back.

I think I need a new sport.

Every sport has smaller details that many viewers can't discern simply by watching the scoreboard. It's fine if you don't like basketball, but the ball doesn't accidentally find its way into the basket, and while you may not grasp the concepts and varying strategies of the game, I imagine you'd take great offense to someone who said that hockey is boring because there aren't enough goals, and the guys just seem to skate around aimlessly.

Because that's the kind of ignorant statement you just made about basketball.

To the best of my understanding, it didn't really help. I think what their deals ended up being was likely to happen either way. If anything, it helped the NFL just a bit more since they got a deal done while losing just a neutral site exhibition game (the HOF game in Canton).

It's all a clusterfark because the league over-expanded during an economic boom and now there are teams in markets that don't want them and/or can't make money. And I say this knowing central NC has gotten behind the team we stole from Hartford. Bettman is a symptom, not a cause; hell, his predecessor got the owners to rig the Hall of Fame voting to make sure he got in. The owners' behavior over the last two decades has put them in this position. Their first stoppage cost them an ESPN contract - is the second one going to get the Stanley Cup relegated to the Big Ten Network?

Agreed. Obviously tastes differ, but to dismiss any sport as "boring" or imply that it's simplistic is to ignore the amount of strategy that involved in all of them.

I agree with everything he said and I played basketball for many years compared to zero playing hockey. There's nothing ignorant about it. Some people don't like things for reasons you may not notice. I think the NFL is a massive waste of time. Millions of people disagree with me. Many people think hockey is dull. I think they're missing out.

At any rate, we're having this discussion because some dickweed came in and talked about hockey being a white sport. Let's not honor the guy by getting into it over which sport we think rocks more. It's a retarded debate no matter how it starts.

this is one of those cases where it really comes through how bad of an idea it is having league commissioners who take the side of the owners instead of the side of the league. Commissioners should stand for the interests of the leagues themselves, which may or may not be what the owners want.

Actually you just keep proving how much of an idiot you are, the NHL is operating on razor thin profits while the players have alternatives to make good money in other markets which just happen to be closer to their homes. The NBA does not have that competition since most of their players live in the states and the other teams place restrictions on signing foreign born players. That makes the negotiations tougher since they don't have the extra competition and the players can play in their home country for the most part and still make money.

2012-11-13 06:01:38 PM
Do it NHL, kill the whole season. Just watch how many f*cks I'll give. Bettman and the BoG are too arrogant to own up and admit they killed the golden goose and still think the public are going to get behind them. FYI, you don't throw out nearly 400 million dollars worth of contracts in a month then expect the fans to believe it when you cry poor.
