I promise not to inundate any of you under a phalanx of egregiously prolix and sesquipedalian verbosity in order to lend a simulacrum of verisimilitude to the assertion that I'm more perspicacious than you are because that would be vain.

/btw, i read that the inventors themselves preferred "jiff" as in the peanut butter

Would any of you pronounciation experts care to inform me how to pronounce "cache"? This bothers me as much as "gif". I hear people using it three different ways. At least gif just has the two...

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: Is it pronounced with the 'g' in gin or the 'g' in gun?

The gun way annoys the hell out of me. I hope it's not correct.

me 2. but just think of it as GIFT without a T.

T goes TAH.

Mantour: American word of the year: GIF

British word of the Year: omnishambles:

"Oxford University Press on Tuesday crowned the word - defined as "a situation that has been comprehensively mismanaged, characterized by a string of blunders and miscalculations" - its top term of 2012."

Link

We already have a perfectly cromulent word for this - "clusterfark".

Its "cash", one syllable.

And .GIF sounds like GRIFF without the R. Its astounding that there are learned people think "graphics" would be pronounced with a soft G. "Giraffics"?

Anyone requesting a "JIF" better not complain when they get peanut butter slathered across their upper lip.

Actually, this is a repeat from 1987.

Oh god how I recall sitting on my Amigas (I had 3), waiting for my GIF porn images to download. Minutes. Minutes.

Then you get that one, looks good, nice nice, lady, no top, ok legs look spread- me likey. Wait. No wait wait wait noooooooooo OH CHRIST NO fark MY EYES.

Then having your mother come in at that moment hearing you scream and seeing the loaded GIF of some lady spread out with a turd dangling from her exhaust and a guy with doodie-crumbles around his lips playing the Turd Burglar.

Yeah. GIF. People don't realize though how much we owe that format- the first universal image format as I recall.

Thank you! The "catch" and "cashé" pronounciations really annoy me (when referring to computers, anyhow). Also: data and forte mispronounciations hit the same nerve. Agree about GIF, that's how I've aways pronounced it. I usually defer to the intentions of the inventors, but since there are other things pronounced "jif", I suppose I'll just be a hypocrite on this one...

i spell out GIF. why? because i'm not some meth addict in a hurry that needs everything in one syllable

I would say gif is a word, when used as a noun. You could say "I need to put these gifs on a disk for tomorrow." You wouldn't be putting "graphics interchange formats" on the disk, but rather image files in the .gif format which are commonly referred to as gifs.

But when is it ever used as a verb?
