But he said he is trying to get people to start thinking about what will happen if the U.S. currency collapses.

He's just asking questions.

I hope the person from the office of legislative services who gets this requests responds to it by mailing back a fresh dog turd.

All these libby libs dancing through the night while their leaders enjoy fine hotels and big cigars. Come on fellow patriots listen sounds of the redistribution.

Subby, I regret to report that your headline already covered all the snark I had to throw at this one.

Good headline.

Look on the bright side. If we hit the fiscal cliff, the most likely result would be deflation.

5 year t-bills are yielding less than 1%. The dollar isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I am unclear how useful gold will be if the economy (or society) collapses. Will stores will accept gold as currency? Somehow I doubt it.

Chapter 1 in Jared Diamond's Collapse is all about how Montana takes so much more from the federal system than it puts in (mostly because has an economy based on unsustainable mining and then passing on the environmental clean up bill to the federal government) that if it wasn't for the USG, the people of Montana would be just like the other extinct civilizations he describes. So that's probably what he has to look forward to if the dollar collapses.

Well you see they're going to live in their underground bunkers off MREs, grow their own penicilin, then after a few hundred years when society has rebuilt itself, their heirs will make a killing in the gold market.

I would agree to his request. I would buy Goldline bullion for him. See how much he likes the 30% processing fee and the additional 30% processing fee to convert it back to money. An effective 60% pay cut should get him to STFU.

Ever since I got my first job at the age of nine, I put all my money into gold, which is currently at an all-time high, so I have a certain amount of money... I've said too much.

They should take him up on his offer and pay him a fixed quantity of gold based on today's price. Then just wait for the butthurt when the bubble bursts.

It seems like after my friends and I wage war to take over grosse ile, that whether we win or lose there will be an increasingly large amount of gold per person floating around.

Surely my buddies can't be the only group with a semi-serious (serious as in we'll definitely do it if the apocalypse strikes, joke in that none of us expect an apocalypse) plan to take over a defensible area and keep the resources for ourselves.

The second thing to do is to form an alliance with whoever ends up taking over the Ambassador bridge and make some trades of food for ammo. Whether we can grow in strength to sufficiently expand out onto the mainland or not we have no idea. Most likely we'll wait till detroit sets itself on fire and then play it by ear from there. It'd be nice to be able to take over gibraltar and the rest of the coast, but if not then we can stay grosse ile based and just pillage. We are optimistic about the morality of the apocalypse though. We don't plan on raping women or anything like that. Just killing and taking your stuff.

I think that's reasonable.

You could just take the dollars and buy gold and silver, Jerry. Not sure you were aware of this. FDR's ban on gold trade ended a long time ago.

Lemme put on my derp filter for this one..

The idea for the gold bugs is that if society collapses, gold will always have some sort of inherent value. As such, it will become the de facto currency. Want a bag of chips, that will be one ounce of gold please!

My in-laws fell into this trap (and they believe every FW:FW:FW e-mal ever, even if it about 2 seconds of Google wizardry to debunk them). I swear, they are good and honest people. They are just so damned conservative that they believe any "liberals bad" sort of argument that it has disabled their bullshiat detectors.

Perfect example: The other day, my FIL was ranting about a transaction tax to my wife. During his rant, I quickly googled it and learned that it was in fact debunked by Snopes a couple of years ago. I don't like getting in the middle of that stuff, because they believe that shiat like a 4 year old believes in Santa Claus and I really do care for these people. I just let it go and let my wife know that the crap they are saying has no basis in reality. As long as I keep her de-derped, it is all good.

I'm not one of those crazy gold-standard people, but I honestly am not sure what this means in the Constitution:

No State shall...make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts

I think that means that if a state makes its own currency, it must be gold or silver, right? Because one could read it as if a state owes someone money, it must pay them in gold or silver which makes no sense in today's world - you don't see city employees getting paid in gold.

So, any Farkers with GEDs in law care to explain that to me?

2012-11-13 05:39:40 PM
I'm not an economics guy but I cannot see how anything could work if we transfer to gold standard. The price of gold an ounce is insane. How would I pay for a gumball? They couldn't dare kick down the price of gold or all the gold investors would riot.

that's what it means. States are theoretically allowed to print currency and make it legal tender if and only if that currency is redeemable in gold or silver coins.
Or they can make gold coins legal tender but they can't actually mint them themselves which makes the whole making "tender" sort of pointless.
