High-tech indeed.

nekom: I don't know, 2000 McCain would have done a damn sight better than Bush. Not a big fan of 2008 McCain though.

THIS...

Hell, I would have even liked McCain around 2004. Now, the doddering old fool is more than welcome to totter off into the sunset. I lost the respect I had built for him when he started to run for President.

nekom: loveblondieo: Damn, he would not stand a chance in today's Republican party. Dole/Kemp was the last reasonable Republican presidential ticket.

Maybe so, maybe no. Dubya billed himself in much the same fashion as Dole, it was 9/11 that changed perceptions and brought the crazy out. It wasn't just in America either, after two big buildings got demolished (Sorry to say the deaths, however tragic, were less numerous than several acts that sparked no political shifts) nearly every country in the world regressed. To be fair Dubya had already "primed the pump" with his cowboy diplomacy and pushy demeanor (especially in Israel) but it was a major change.

For instance in Japan, politics had shifted enough that the public schooling system was finally prepared to start teaching the Rape of Nanking as a thing that happened in history. 9/11 blew that away, along with many other "hard right" turns in public policy.

It's never one thing, and it's hard to say what a President McCain would have been like, but 9/11 changed everything, if only because we let it.

And it will remain that way until Jack Kemp either gets elected VP or leads the Bills to victory in the Super Bowl.

That's a picture from Pripyat. The whole town looks like the inhabitants left in a real hurry, and weren't allowed back to collect their stuff. Spooky, eh?

From the site: "The Dole-Kemp Economic Plan Will Balance the Budget by 2002"

Clinton did it by 1999. And it happened in part by raising taxes on the wealthy. Craaaaazy.

Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: Needs more sparkly background gifs and embedded midi files

Sometimes I miss the 90's Internet. I'm not ashamed to admit that I embedded my share of midi into my webpages, maybe even had an animated gif or two. (More than two. A lot more.) I was in college then, and it was a crazy time, when your computer was cutting edge if it had a built-in modem and every week our mailboxes overflowed with AOL disks promising a thousand hours of free internet.

I probably saved my first webpage somewhere, on a ZIP disk no doubt, and looking at it now would be like looking at a high school yearbook from the 70's or 80's. We thought we were so cutting edge, the epitome of cool, and now we have no choice but to shake our heads and be grateful that we know better.

So thank you to whoever posted this page. That really took me back.

Actually, I am not surprised. My personal web site from an ISP that I left six years ago was up until last year.

And he made the staff build him a stage before he fired them, too... for him to use to fire them.
