"Following Bob Dole's mention of his campaign Web site address in his closing remarks last night in Hartford, the site has been deluged by a flood of first-time visitors. In a single four-hour period today, the Dole-Kemp '96 Web site received more than 762,000 "hits" -- the Web standard for measuring traffic on a site. The total hits on the site for today alone is expected to pass the 2 million mark."

"When users first visit the site, they are given the option of setting up a custom Dole Web page. Each custom page contains a personal tool bar that welcomes the user by name, alerts them to an electronic "In Box" containing any new press releases or other campaign materials posted since their last visit, directs them to briefing papers on issues in which they expressed interest, and offers a home-state icon for local information about the Clinton record and the Dole agenda in that state."

Bob Dole Has a Distinguished Record of Leadership in Civil Rights
As President, Bob Dole will continue his strong commitment to protecting the civil rights of all Americans. During his career, he:

Supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Voted for the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967. The act protects older employees and job applicants from age discrimination in employment. In 1990, Senator Dole supported the expansion and clarification of the ADEA to protect older workers from the loss of their employee benefit plans due to age discrimination.
Played an instrumental role in extending the Voting Rights Act in 1982.
Led the battle to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is the first comprehensive federal law which protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in employment, public services, transportation and telecommunications.

Introduced the Equal Opportunity Act, which prohibits the use of racial and gender preferences in federal contracting, federal employment, and programs wholly administered by the federal government.

Bob Dole believes that we have made great strides to end discrimination in this country, but that we still have much work to do.

Damn, he would not stand a chance in today's Republican party. Dole/Kemp was the last reasonable Republican presidential ticket.

Maybe so, maybe no. Dubya billed himself in much the same fashion as Dole, it was 9/11 that changed perceptions and brought the crazy out. It wasn't just in America either, after two big buildings got demolished (Sorry to say the deaths, however tragic, were less numerous than several acts that sparked no political shifts) nearly every country in the world regressed. To be fair Dubya had already "primed the pump" with his cowboy diplomacy and pushy demeanor (especially in Israel) but it was a major change.

For instance in Japan, politics had shifted enough that the public schooling system was finally prepared to start teaching the Rape of Nanking as a thing that happened in history. 9/11 blew that away, along with many other "hard right" turns in public policy.

It's never one thing, and it's hard to say what a President McCain would have been like, but 9/11 changed everything, if only because we let it.

Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: Needs more sparkly background gifs and embedded midi files

Sometimes I miss the 90's Internet. I'm not ashamed to admit that I embedded my share of midi into my webpages, maybe even had an animated gif or two. (More than two. A lot more.) I was in college then, and it was a crazy time, when your computer was cutting edge if it had a built-in modem and every week our mailboxes overflowed with AOL disks promising a thousand hours of free internet.

I probably saved my first webpage somewhere, on a ZIP disk no doubt, and looking at it now would be like looking at a high school yearbook from the 70's or 80's. We thought we were so cutting edge, the epitome of cool, and now we have no choice but to shake our heads and be grateful that we know better.

So thank you to whoever posted this page. That really took me back.

A little bit of shenanigans here.

"Still online" isn't quite right. "Put back online" is more accurate.

The actual Dole/Kemp 1996 website was hosted at dole96.com.

This version is being hosted by a group for archival purposes, not by any remnant of the Dole campaign.

Having said that, I love the idea that some parts of the mid-90s internet might still be online.

Hell, 2000 Bush wasn't that bad. Remember "a humble foreign policy'?

2012-11-13 03:41:45 PM

TheBigJerk: It's never one thing, and it's hard to say what a President McCain would have been like, but 9/11 changed everything, if only because we let it.

It is, and all we have is at best speculation on what that alternative timeline would have been like. I'm positive a President McCain would have gone to war in Afghanistan after 9/11, in fact I'm equally positive that a President Gore would have. I don't believe either of those would have had us in Iraq though.

That sounds slicker than anything they have in place currently.

With Bob Dole as President, the United States will once again be the world's technology leader. Americans will have the freedom to use the Internet without governmental intrusion. He believes the American people know best how to manage their own lives and their own computers.

"As President, he will:

Seek ways to make health care more accessible and affordable for all Americans.
Ensure that individuals who change jobs do not lose their coverage or face pre-existing condition limitations.
Give self-employed individuals the same tax deductions that large corporations have to buy health insurance.
Make Medical Savings Accounts a real option available to all Americans.
Support efforts to make community and home based care more readily available."
