(Politico)   Rick Perry says Texas won't secede because America needs to stay the way it is, because Texas would definitely lose the war to bring them back into the fold, and one other thing, but he forgot. Oops   (politico.com) divider line 65

Doesn't Texas have a population of over 25 million? How the hell is 25,000 signatures enough for something like "secession" to be taken seriously enough to warrant an official response from the governor (not to mention the White House)?

The signature requirement is for any petition.

I'm thinking he's nipping it in the bud right now instead of it going on much more.

Relax. In due time, Perry will some something mind-numbingly stupid about this issue and Texas will once again be embarrassed on a national level.

Why, oh WHY can't we get rid of this prick?

Looks like people from outside of TX can also sign it. I'd imagine you could get 50 million not in Texas to agree to let them leave.

I say we start a new petition for the whitehouse to name the species off rat that resides on Rick Perry's head.

I honestly read that as "Treason dictates" , the words aren't even that close so I'm not sure how that happened.

This is simply the requirement for an internet petition to receive a response from the white house. It isn't a legal requirement. There have been all kinds of petitions, some addressed, some ignored. Its a dumb idea the administration has been doing to make people feel listened to without having any real effect on policy.

Good news! His unwillingness to secede may be enough to get him primaried from the right! Thus ensuring he goes away and we get someone even more insane and idiotic! Huzzah!

So let me get this straight. Rick Perry is the reasonable person in this situation? WTF.

Give him time, the new legislative session is about to start.
Or as we here in Austin say, "The circus is in town".
Soon there will be Republican state senators from East Bumblefark, TX getting arrested for prostitution and gay sex in some park restroom.
Good times.

The idea of the "We the People" site is that any petition on there, any at all, that gets 25,000 signatures in 30 days gets an official response of some form. I am curious to see what form this response will take; hopefully, it'll get posted on Fark.

Of all the states that could leave Texas could actually pull it off. They have the size and the resources to pull it off.

Still weapons grade stupid, but they could do it.

Let's just not seat their reps & senators til this all plays out, just to be sure.

Perhaps Perry is worried that there wouldn't be a "war to bring them back into the fold."

"We're going, we really are. Watch us. We're stepping out the door right now. . . ."
...........
"Um, isn't anyone going to stop us?"

Good. I like being an American, and all my stuff is in Texas.

2012-11-13 11:47:58 AM
Not that I am in favor of secession, but I do have a lot of federal loans that need to be repaid.

2012-11-13 11:49:18 AM
Two things:

1) Everyone who signed the petition should check with a lawyer to explore emigration before secession.

2) Should Texas actually secede I hereby offer iced tea and lemon squares to any members of the US Army State Recovery Division (Central Texas Unit), and if needed I have two couches a few folks could sleep on. I'll waive my 3rd amendment rights.

Sincerely,

The Texas American Underground

Yes, deporting people for their opinion is the American Way!

Well, they don't want to be in the US anymore, so we should accommodate them.

Two reasons Texas will never secede.

1. Sweet, sweet oil and gas subsidies.

2. Just as sweet defense contractor money.

They'll cut all their state services, offer the worst public education in the country, slash state taxes to statewide insolvency, and make government appointees local commissars and property tax barons, but dammit they'll keep that delicious Exxon and Raytheon money flowing in.

I posted this in an earlier secession thread. John Steinbeck wrote about Texas secession 50 years ago..

"We have heard them threaten to secede so often that I formed an enthusiastic organization -- The American Friends for Texas Secession. This stops the subject cold. They want to be able to secede but they don't want anyone to want them to."

Western state rugged individualism for you: we can't just do it, we have to do it with smug self-satisfaction.

Just think, Texas. Without that pesky Supreme Court looking over your shoulders, you could outlaw abortion and legalize child executions. It's everything you ever wanted.

Just leave it to the Texas people or legislature to decide if they want to secede. Once THAT happens, then the Feds can get involved.

After Quebec's 2nd referendum on separate which didn't succeed, a Constitutional scholar pointed out that although it was possible for Quebec to seceded, nothing would stop any geographical area within Quebec from itself seceding and joining Quebec (e.g., Montreal, Northern Quebec). Funny how that put an end to that movement (more or less).

Because he's not really _just_ Rick Perry, he's the representative of one of the bigger regional political machines that risks losing cohesion if it lets down one of the good-old-boy components. It's a big chunk of both Texas parties and has a decent slice of the Louisiana pie as well.

//But yeah, kinda frustrating for me, too.

It's an open petition that anyone can sign on a public website, whether it's even effectively restricted to US citizens is somewhat debatable, and since it's been posted to Reddit/FARK/some outright troll blogs we're talking like three angry dudes from Texas and 24,993 trolls from 4chan or sommat.

Not really news, this is the problem with most of the "citizen petitions" on the site.
