I usually found gym a nice change of pace in grade school. It seemed like a waste of time in high school, so I got them to accept an outside sport I was involved in as my PE requirement.

PE was awesome.

You know what sucks more than gym class? Remedial gym class.

Nothing like having to be in a special class comprised entirely of asthmatics who were strictly forbidden from running lest their tracheae seize up. Nothing like giving an 11-year-old an advance taste of what it'll be like living in a nursing home.

Forget the parachute. The best days were floor hockey and those little plastic butt scooters

Hey, gym was awesome. I wish I was back there now. As a kid of course.

Because nothing sucks more than a bunch of young kids learning to use their bodies and develop them in healthy ways, right? Right?

You know what else sucked? You could play basketball, soccer, chase the fat kids, baseball, dodgeball, tennis.

Worst class. Ever.

I was a biggest nerd, and sucked at most sports, but I loved PE.

Oh boy, where do I start....

I was a skinny little runt in high school. I wanted so bad to get into better shape but the PE teacher couldn't care less about anyone but the best jocks. We had a weight room but it meant complete ridicule from others if you started out with only one weight so I never bothered after my first attempt.

Then there was that humiliating "pick teammates" ritual that was meant to destroy you. A captain jock was chosen for each team and then they'd pick their players from a line up, all the while you are standing there praying not to the the absolute last pick.

PE teachers, at least when I was a kid, were the spawn of Satan.

It got so bad that, even though I was a top performing academically student at my high school, I cut just about every gym class and flunked it. In my senior year I got called in and told I couldn't graduate high school because I was short a PE credit. Thankfully by then I grew a set and looked at my counselor and said "Look at my grades and my classes. Are you really going to deny me graduating because I repeatedly forgot my jock strap?" He did something on the computer, and I graduated, thankfully.

Hmmm, torment by the bigger stronger kids who could barely read but could catch a ball? How about showering with strangers? Or the flat topped gym teacher/Driver's Ed instructor who really wanted to be a Drill Instructor in the Marine Corp and lives out his fantasy by screaming at a children? Then there is the oddly masculine woman who spends a lot of time monitoring the girls showers. Or the football coach who shepherds his running back through the remedial class he just happens to teach without actually teaching said player anything.

Yes, Phy Ed, the paragon of the American Public School system.

I didn't mind gym class in H.S. It was an excuse to be a little late for your next class, because the teacher usually gave you a 5 or 10 minute grace if you wanted to take a shower after gym. There's no way you can shower, change clothes, run to your locker, and then get to your next class in 3 minutes. Anyway, we played a lot of sports rather than idly standing around doing jumping jacks. There were some heavy kids in the class, but from what I can remember, no one picked on them.

Now, in grammar school, my 6th grade teacher had this game we'd used to play every Friday in the last hour before school let out (2-3 p.m.) if we got at least an 80% average on all tests/quizzes we took that week. She called it "Bombardment", but it was basically dodge ball. Boys were on one side of the gym, girls were on the other.....though sometimes we'd do 5th grade vs. 6th grade. It was a great way to let off steam.

I don't want to sound like an old fart (I'm 30), but for every one thing I love about an adult, there's about 2 or 3 things I miss about being a kid. *sigh*

Not my favorite but I got along OK. I was in good shape, ran track and cross country. In junior and senior year if you could do well on a fitness test you were placed in the top of three tiers. Tier 1 could pretty much determine what activities they wanted to do. I was in Tier 1. Tier 2 was "traditional" gym class. Tier 3 was remedial, and focused on getting kids in poor shape up to Tier 2.

I can't really say I enjoyed it at all. But it wasn't the nightmare scenario for me that it was for others.

Bombardment and dodge ball are things that make my heart ache. I was a hero, if just for one hour.

Oh, and who the hell took showers after gym class? Unless it was football, or early morning baseball practice, none of those kids were getting naked w/each other.

At my high school, marching band counted as a PE credit. Of course, that didn't start until I was in 11th grade, two years after I took PE to satisfy that requirement.

I hated doing the ridiculous exercises. However, getting to check out the gym coach and my fellow students in the locker room was a very redeeming detail.

1. Gym
2. Lunch
3. Recess
4. Free period

Those were my 4 favorite classes in school.

PE was horrible because it had the worst bullying, you had to get changed, and the teacher was also a bully. For those of us with no coordination it was horrible torture. The fact we had to practice dancing and choose partners was a cruel joke. The only good thing about elementary, junior, and high school is that it is over.

As with the rest of the people in the thread - I appreciated PE as a break from the boredom and sitting. Didn't appreciate the gym teacher who made showers mandatory for all the boys in 7th grade. Or the fact that he declared we were too disorganized to get our own towels, so he'd throw you one once you came out of the shower (and yes, more often than not you had to jump for it).

Frankly I disliked him less than the high-school gym teacher/football coach who spent the hour playing basketball with the football players and gave everyone else a 'B' by default.

Seriously. A 'B' in PE because you never got past your high-school glory days? Sad.

Your gym coach sounds like he should have had a 'seat right over there.'

The best part of gym class was the ride there. My grammar school didn't have a gym, so we were bussed downtown to a gym. During that 10-15 minute ride I got to read. I could have talked with my friends, but my best friend at the time was dumber than a box of hair, so why bother.

Some of the worst parts were breaking a bra strap in 5th grade at the start of gym class, and getting into an argument with the coach in 8th grade over BS softball calls (I'm on 2nd, nobody's on 1st, batter pops out, and I'm out too?). Getting picked last never bothered me.

He had a seat over there - pulled a folding chair right into the area in front of the showers. Can't imagine why he wouldn't have wanted to stand...

If that's what happened in your PE classes, you're way ahead of most of us. We were just practice pylons for the guys on the school teams. You could learn more watching a game on TV than you would in that class.

Gym teachers hate me because I was an anomaly.

I was so slow running laps, I used to do 2 while everyone else did 4, we finished that same time, so they couldn't keep track. I'm the reason they instituted the ice cream stick policy. They'd hand you one every time you'd pass the mark so they knew you weren't cheating.

Of course I got a 45 on the sit and reach, best in Sachem, which had a shiat ton of kids. Meanwhile the skinny kids could reach past their toes. I scored so high on it, that it raised my total score to a respectable level , even though the other 3 physical fitness categories were horrid

I couldn't do a single pull up and couldn't bench over 100 pounds, but I could do over 800lbs on the leg press.

I could balance on one foot (while holding the other) without swaying for 10 minutes, everyone else couldn't do 10 seconds at a time.

I could hit a baseball 400 feet, but still only get a single

I could serve in volleyball so well, the team would rotate around me until the other side biatched it wasn't fair. Of course I'd be picked last or next to last every year before they'd figure it out, so I'd make them pay for it. I'd spike it so hard, the other kids would duck for cover.

And water polo. If we got a lead, They'd hand me the ball. I had a vice like grip (yep, bu couldn't do a pullup) I would have 10 kids all trying to pry the ball out of my arms. They'd give up every single time. Not once was anyone able to remove it.

Damn did I take a trip down memory lane here.

Due to my asthma I got put in what was called "modified PE" when I was in middle school. Some of my classmates had asthma, one was blind from birth, one had dwarfism and the rest had various conditions that kept them from participating in the regular PE classes. Most of the time we ended up being stuck with a first year teacher.

I liked gym class for the most part. Even though my coordination was for shiat, I had pretty decent endurance. High school gym kind of sucked because they required showers afterwards and I was always afraid that I'd get one of those freak boners most teenaged boys get for no reason while I was in the locker room or shower. The swimming portion of gym was great because "Hey, girls in swimsuits, even if they are one pieces." But again, sudden boner.

I'm guessing you're in your 20's like me, many schools have gotten rid of mandatory showering for some reason. Best guess I have is the whole molestation issue and it's farking embarrassing for developing bodies.

My gym classes tended to be fun or easy. My best guess is that there were so many asthmatics and overweight kids all they wanted was some half-assed participation, so easy A.

The only issue I had and the only F I ever got was from gym class. The way my school set it up was we would have PE class everyday but on alternating weeks. Also, If you missed a PE class you had to read a health article and write a 1 paragraph summary on it and answer some easy questions.

I got really sick on the last 5 days of the semester, which was also the last 5 days of PE class. I came back to school on a non-PE week, then when I cycled back to PE they told me I failed PE that semester because I had missed 5 classes but because it was after the semester was over I couldn't make it up via the articles. Farking bullshiat.

I have you greened because you are funny and that was funny but I am serious about PE. The bullying in school that I went through was full of teasing, physical violence, and the threat of sexual violence. I went to a white trash high school in a white trash town. My high school had and probably still has a daycare for the students.
