Death does not work that way - you exist until you don't - no peace to factor in, your consciousness simply no longer exists. Unless you are saying there is something peaceful about suicide?

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare sieze the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art.
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...

You must not have got the memo. Its cool, I'm sure another bus to the next plane of existence will be along shortly.

Just kind of goes to show you that people into this extreme body modification aren't the most mentally stable people to begin with. No amount of needles or holes in your body will ever fill the void in your soul. Usually, people figure that out. Some of them, like this guy, never do.

Sad, sure. But you can't say you didn't see it coming.

It only took him twice as long to join the "27 Club"

And they are:

27) Amy Winehouse - Many young people desire fame having no idea what it truly entails. Once there, they will do anything to avoid its pressures. Throw in the illness of addiction and you've got a staggering, slurring Molotov cocktail waiting to explode.

26) Les Harvey - Harvey was the co-founding guitarist for Stone The Crows and a member of the Alex Harvey Soul Band, the Blues Council, and the Scottish group Cartoone, who opened for Led Zeppelin. He was electrocuted by an ungrounded microphone.

25) Sean McCabe - Lead singer for the alternative rock band Ink And Dagger, McCabe pulled a John Bonham/Bon Scott and choked to death on his own vomit.

24) Helmut Kollen - Bassist and singer for German progressive rock band Triumvirat, Kollen died from carbon monoxide poisoning while listening to studio mixes in his car while running the engine with the garage door shut. Especially odd, since Kollen was an auto mechanic and race car driver.

23) Roger Durham - Percussionist for American R&B group Bloodstone, Durham fell off a horse.

22) Jesse Belvin - Belvin was an American R&B singer who wrote the classic tunes "Earth Angel" and "Goodnight My Love." He was killed in a head-on collision in the ironically named Hope, Arkansas.

21) Gary Thain - Bassist for the Keef Hartley Band and Uriah Heep, Thain died of a heroin overdose.

20) Richey Edwards - The rhythm guitar player for the Manic Street Preachers is said to have committed suicide, though not everyone agrees. He has been missing since 1995.

19) Malcolm Hale - Lead guitarist and trombonist for Spanky & Our Gang, whose hits included "Sunday Will Never Be The Same" and "Lazy Day," Hale died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a crappy space heater.

18) Bryan Ottoson - Guitarist for American Head Charge, Ottoson died from an accidental prescription drug overdose.

17) Mia Zappata - Singer for the Gits, Zappata was raped, beaten, and strangled to death. Her assailant was convicted and sentenced to 36 years in prison.

16) Kristen Pfaff - Pfaff became the bassist for Hole in 1993 and died from a heroin overdose in 1994.

15) Jeremy Michael Ward - The "sound technician" and "vocal operator" for the Mars Volta and the dub group De Facto, Ward died of a heroin overdose.

14) Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson - The singer, guitarist, and harmonica player for the blues band Canned Heat, Wilson sang that "Going Up The Country" song and died of a drug overdose, though the two are not linked. Many suppose it was suicide.

13) Pete de Freitas - Replacing the drum machine, de Freitas became Echo & The Bunnymen's first drummer. He died in 1989 in a motorcycle accident.

12) Jean-Michel Basquiat - A member of the noise-rock band Gray, Basquiat went on to appear in the video for Blondie's "Rapture" and to briefly date Madonna. He was also a successful modern painter who died of a heroin overdose at his art studio.

11) Pete Ham - Depressed over being screwed out of the money he earned as a member of Badfinger, guitarist Pete Ham hanged himself in 1975. His bandmate, Tom Evans, also depressed over missing money, followed suit and hanged himself in 1983.

10) Ron "Pigpen" McKernan - Keyboardist and founding member of the Grateful Dead, McKernan died of a stomach hemorrhage caused by years of heavy drinking. He had left the band the previous year.

9) Dave Alexander - The original bassist for the Stooges, Alexander died of pulmonary edema after being admitted to the hospital for pancreatitis brought on from years of drinking. Mike Watt of the Minutemen replaced him in the reformed Stooges.

8) D. Boon - A broken neck killed the singer-guitarist-songwriter for the Minutemen when the van he was sleeping in ran off the road. The band disbanded immediately.

7) Chris Bell - The guitarist for the legendary cult-pop-rock band Big Star had left the group and struggled to begin a recording career. He worked in his father's restaurant. His car struck a pole and killed him instantly.

6) Jim Morrison - Is he really dead? He was "allegedly" found dead in a bathtub in Paris. Listed cause of death was heart failure, but others have suggested otherwise.

5) Brian Jones - "Death By Misadventure," aka he drowned in a swimming pool. Others say it was a conspiracy and he was left to die in the pool.

4) Kurt Cobain - Shot by his own gun. Cobain killed himself after battling heroin addiction and not feeling it like Freddie Mercury.

3) Robert Johnson - Legendary bluesman who inspired British boys to play blues. The legend says he was poisoned by a jealous husband.

2) Janis Joplin - Said to be a heroin overdose. Joplin was also noted for downing staggering amounts of alcohol.

1) Jimi Hendrix - Hendrix choked on his own vomit while being brought to the hospital to be saved from a mix of drugs and alcohol.

Just to rile everyone up;

There's a noted correlation between depression and suicide, and those who end up performing significant body modification (including a great body of work relating to transgender individuals). You might think that it makes sense, that feeling like you're in the wrong body would be depressing and that once you get the 'right one' you'll be happy - but that's not true. Even after receiving the modifications, these folk are still depressed and have a much higher chance of suicide! This is not a minority either, but a majority of folks.

So, the snarky folks saying, "Gee, he had issues, who woulda thunk it," may be right in the general sense. If we actually want to help these people to be happy, I can't think of any way to do so without being a fascist about it: doctors treat anyone who asks for significant body modifications as suicidal-depressive until they get sign off from a psychologist that says otherwise.

Or, you know, let them do what they want, knowing that they'll likely be miserable, and at least attempt to off themselves, if not succeed.

Death does not work that way - you exist until you don't - no peace to factor in, your consciousness simply no longer exists. Unless you are saying there is something peaceful about suicide?

I bet you're the kind of person who proselytize atheism at funerals.

I think his point is not that there's nothing beyond, but that the concept of finding peace through self-destruction just isn't how peace works. Suicide is founded in violence and hatred against onesself. It doesn't bring peace.

I know we all say things like "found peace" to make ourselves feel better about the person who committed suidice, but the sad fact of suicide is that there's no violence more inwardly hateful.

Which makes it even sadder.

From what I've read, the guy was a total nutcase AND A dumbass.

He wanted to buy a bunch of vintage tiger skin pelts so he could have his human skin removed and have the pelts grafted on in replacement.

24.media.tumblr.com

1. You can't make preserved dead skin into live tissue again.

2. Old vintage pelts & rugs were treated with various nasty chemicals, like mercury. Had he actually tried to do this with his quack of a doctor, the results would have been painfully gruesome.

In short, the guy was a total mental case with a fetish for self mutilation, a la Karl Kroenen.

"On November 5th 2012, Dennis Avner was confirmed dead at 54. His body is being held in Tonopah and his cause of death is speculated to be suicide. "

Can you imagine the sheer temptation there must be for the morgue staff to post photos on the Internet of this guy on the slab? And just imagine what his autopsy report would read like (you know what to do, Smoking Gun).

This guy's carcass should be sent to the Mütter Museum.

Some days, Fark really surprises me and restores my faith in humanity a little by showing me the kindness, charity and compassion random strangers can show each other.

Most days, though, there are threads like this. I don't mean everyone in it, just some of you. So farking what if he was a weirdo. He didn't seem to be hurting anyone. It's not like he was out taking bailout money and buying new banks with money he should have been giving out to people who could use it, or treating people like second class citizens just because of who they love.

Yeah, yeah I know. Welcome to fark.

From one furry weirdo to another, RIP Stalking Cat

GoldSpider: Newsflash: People who do stuff like this are not well.

That's not being judgmental, that's an appeal to society to stop overlooking stuff like this in the name of "acceptance," and get these people the help they need.

Sure, to a point. But that point is balanced on the need for personal freedom and my desire to see fewer people, body modded or not, on the surface of the Earth.

So "stopping suicides" is a bit of a conundrum for me, like voting against a city-run casino where the collective debt is reduced thanks to the gambling problems of out-of-towners.

Bit of a dilemma.

Sorry, but it's a well established though little known fact that the Hurons hunted the North American Tiger to extinction. The exact date of the final kill is, of course, unknown but recent archeological finds in southern Canada place the event somewhere between the seventh and eighth centuries BC. The skin of the North American Tiger figured prominently in the Huron culture as a symbol reserved for tribal chieftans. The claws and teeth were given out as rewards for contributions to the tribe's well being to individual members, much as a letter of commendation might be bestowed today.

The North American Tiger was somewhat smaller than its African cousin but was revered by Huron society for its ferocious demeanor. The use of the tiger's likeness was reserverd for the totems of the chieftans and therefore very few examples survived.

Oh, I see the Fark armchair psychiatrists are out in full force today.

I met Stalking Cat over a decade ago, as well as Lizardman (pic above) and many, many, many more just as or nearly as modified. They are just the same as everybody else, except they have the strength to do their own thing. Y'all espouse individualism but very very few actually know what that means. The modified people I know range from the homeless to multi-millionaires. Same with the non-modified people I know. I worked in the body modification industry for a decade and though I'm not visibly different, I've had extensive work done. And I also have two degrees, including a master's in architecture and a totally fun but mostly average life.

Please resist the urge to pigeonhole this man based on his looks. It's very sad when anybody takes his own life. Non-modified people take their lives, too.

signaljammer: You know this because you come back from the dead?

No. He knows this because there IS no coming back from the dead, no matter what your specific fairy tale of choice is or whom your imaginary friends are. This is why the human being, just like any other animal instinctively seeks to continue its own existence. If religious people really were secure in their continued life after death, they wouldn't bother with mourning the dead.

Sandinista81: Im still wondering how tigers became a totem animal in North America?

Good question. I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and try to explain this - mind you, this is just my thinking. This may not be fact at all...

The Native Americans (which is a term I prefer over Indians, for that misnomer is one of the dumbest mistakes in human history), are descended from populations from Asia that migrated here. It took a helluva long time, of course. 1000's of years. And they had to travel all the way though northern Russia and Alaska before making their way to areas where they could where almost no clothing and still be comfortable.

The point is, where they originated HAS tigers. Lots of them, in fact. So, I'm sure that they are present in their folklore.

A number of years ago I watched an episode of Ripley's Believe it or Not with my daughter who was about 10 at the time. About a month later we went to Vegas to visit my brother. While there we decided to take the kids to the Siegfried and Roy exhibit to see the dolphins and large cats. We were wandering around and the kids were having a great time. My daughter kept saying, "Mom! It's the cat man! It's the cat man!" I was trying to keep track of a toddler at the time and since we were there to see large cats I didn't really pay attention to what she was saying at first. "Ya, there's lots of big cats, huh honey." "No mom! It's the guy from TV!" So I finally looked at what she was talking about and this gentelman was standing about 15 feet away from us looking at the tiger exhibit. It was cool to seehim up close. We approached him and he was very kind to my daughter and even let me take a picture of them togther. My toddler was terrified. I would love to post the pic but sadly, it's in storage.

From their comments: These are not my words, from someone else on a different site but I thought they were so nice that I'd share them.

This is really sad. I took a class in college about perceived monsters, social deviants and subcultures, and the people who identify themselves as such. We were lucky enough to have a live, hour-long Skype interview with Dennis and he was incredibly intelligent, patient and friendly. He only pursued what made him happy and came by it honestly. He told the class his earliest memory was wondering where his tail went. The world lost a really kind, gentle guy and the body mod world lost a pioneer who did a lot for people seeking to identify themselves as more than their physical bodies allowed. Rest in peace, Cat.

This is twice I've read about someone that knew the other that died more closely before it came to suicide. I've known personally people that don't go to extremes for so many years, simplistic....and they made THAT choice. I hope that we can remove any booze and drugs that provided him the space in his mind to make that fatal leap.

I don't know. Not going to make an assumption. Is it depression that makes us do stupid shiat like suicide? I'm not afraid of a guy with..wiskers...if that's what he's into. I can handle having beers with people like that. Neither of us are threats to each other, even though I look like the clean, non smoker, no tattoo guy. Nothing to be afraid of. But something makes us tick, and when it comes to suicide (and thankfully I have a bazillion friends that pay attention when I'm not "feeling it") something got farked up. Why did he get to THAT point?

Marshall Willenholly:

All of you who are making fun of him, enjoy the fact that you are sane and don't have a serious mental condition.

I'm not sure I fit that description. Neither were my psychiatrists, my ex-roommates, my family....

Some of us have shiatty lives and we try to deal with them in whatever ways we can.

I'll drink to that. For one thing if booze disfigures me it does so 1) on the inside where it's less obvious and 2) as a side-effect of drinking, not as what I pay for.

incidentally, to quote Wikipedia, "Avner, whose parents were of Huron and Lakota heritage, stated that altering oneself to resemble one's own totem is an ancient Huron tradition." Actually they meant painting yourself, wearing costumes, and moving and acting like the animal, all to produce a state where you resembled the animal even more "on the INSIDE." I'm pretty sure that even before the Caucasian Invasion the Hurons would have thought this guy was bonkers. I'd also like to see proof of Native ancestry: this guy looked as white as me.

I will now continue adding yet another day to my shiatty life. At some point I've got to get myself a new psychiatrist so I can keep taking the maximum dose of two allegedly complementary antidepressants; after that might come how much straight rum I can drink without feeling sick, though maybe I'll precede that by going to the ex's and walking the dogs.

One thing that helps me bear my shiatty life is comparing myself to people who are even worse off than me, sometimes by their own doing, including people who are so fat their legs can't hold them up, people who are miserable in prison for leaving kiddy porn around, people who drove drunk and got severely and permanently farked up in a wreck, and people who go out of their way to become even uglier than I am naturally. For the sake of my longevity it's great that there are so many of these people around to pity and scorn more than myself.

As another crazy bum back in Baltimore put it, "I live to make my enemies suffer" -- in other words to make my enemies suffer from my existence more than I do myself -- though it's an added bonus to my lazy self that some enemies make themselves suffer badly without any effort or expense to me.

Fark is wonderful. Thanks, fellas!

Sad, sure. But you can't say you didn't see it coming.

Raug the Dwarf: He wasn't and couldn't be happy as himself. That was the problem. No amount of plastic surgery or body modification would make him happy if he couldn't be fine with who he was to begin with. Then again, if he was happy in the first place, he wouldn't have needed all that surgery to turn himself into something he wasn't. The problem was on the inside, not how he looked on the outside.

It isn't so hard to understand. Some people can run a 4 minute mile, and some people never will, no matter how much they try. Some people are happy and at peace with who they are, and some people aren't, and never will be. He obviously tried very hard to find some sort of contentment, and in the end he failed.

I am useless to the wild earth
So sings the bowels of every place
I used to map the laughter
Though I could never find its face
And anywhere that I may go
My judgment roars its restless bells
I never knew and shall never know
A worse place than myself

I don't think it is. I really can't be sure of course, but I suspect that people who insist on taking drastic steps to change gender tend to have been brought up in environments that encourage sexual stereotypes as well. People often cite brain differences that happen in utero, but actually these differences are much more common than "gender dysphoria" and don't really provide an explanation - only part of the story at best. When there really are people who feel just as strongly that they "should" be a cat or a wolf etc then you must admit there is a big psychological factor at play.

I think it is really sad that he is dead. At least he was someone who made the world more interesting. On the other hand if he was really miserable that is terrible. But we don't know that if he committed suicide it had ANYTHING to do with being a "cat man". He could have had some recent life events, just like a lot of other people who kill themselves.

Is the opposite gender so alien to you that switching genders is tantamount to switching species? Most transsexuals live happy lives once they've transitioned.

Stalking Cat...

I first met him in 2003, but of course I saw the Ripley's episode long before that.

He was never a close friend, but I've worked with him at conventions, and hung out with him. He wasn't a mentor to me like he was to several of my friends, but he certainly loomed large in our lives - when people I look to for guidance looked to him for advice and guidance, well.

He was a friend, and now he has passed away. But for people to say "If he was a friend why didn't you help him," help him.. with what, exactly? His sense of body dimorphism, that he was in the wrong body? His hidden disastifaction and depression?

I'm not a psychologist, unlike so many people here. I'm not trained in instantly understanding what's wrong with people based on a photo, short description, or brief interaction - and I stopped thinking I could when I was 16. I'm just an overnight security guard that now works data entry.

I hope that he found his solace.

Really? Are you sure of this? Actually, if you think about it, the issue isn't that the other gender is alien to me, but that their own gender is alien to them. I'm perfectly happy with who and what I am. Meanwhile, their whole issue is, "Waah! I'm not happy with my gender roles, but I'm not going to sink to the level of homosexuality."

I suspect I may be wrong about that last part, but that is how it seems.

Nope.

It's the feeling of you're in the wrong body, you've got the wrong senses, that everything is just off. It's like wearing your shoes on the wrong feet, that the fitted suit you're wearing is backwards. Only, more intense.

It's the feeling that you're missing something, that something isn't there - imagine if you've had long hair, then cut it short. Your mannerisms are for something that isn't there.

That's the start of it.

/Has it himself, to a degree.

Very few fundamentalists in America actually commit crimes. They are more content to scream from their couches, or in the case of the WBC, from next to a graveyard.

I wouldn't doubt that he would tell a religious person to "go kill yourself" over their religious beliefs.

There is a new breed of Atheist arising, and they do not want to get along with religion. They want it actively purged from all aspects of life. Not just government. They cannot see any reason or value in faith. They do not respect the fact that some people find comfort in religion, and they cannot hold in their head the concept that one can hold religion as valuable, while not compromising ones views on science.

These new Atheists seek a final solution to the 'problem' of religion and we should be very worried about them, because having been bullied, the first thing they will try and do when they attain power is bully anyone who resembles those who bullied them.

Go look at /r/atheism on reddit if you don't believe me. There is some really farked up group think going on there, and it makes me ashamed to say "I don't believe in God"

I hardly think these people are a majority of Atheists, but they ARE the ugliest, and the most vocal.

Not really. In every religion thread the whole burden of proof/tentative conclusion thing gets hashed out. The logic nerds should know by now that nitpicking about tentative conclusions is a dead argument, it's not logical to insist upon negatives being proven, etc. Especially if they're going to consider themselves practitioners of logic; this is some serious "Intro To" stuff here.

People who believe in myths, especially comforting ones, just have a hard time being told they're not true.

How do you know what death is, if humanity doesn't know what life is? I mean "know" on an atomic and molecular level.

I'm not talking about handwaving generalizations, I mean specifically. Even if we could say, "Take two molecules of X and three atoms of Y, arrange them like so, and voila! That's life," we still have no idea of the "Why it works" and "What it is, exactly."

As a result, it's hard to say what death is, exactly.

Um, you do understand that MtFs sometimes identify as lesbians, right? And vice versa for FtMs?

Its not about not being happy with gender roles. Gender dysphoria is about not being happy with your body. A lot of men aren't happy with the size of their cocks. MtFs (not all, but many) often are miserable about having a cock, PERIOD. In severe cases, just having an erection can trigger dysphoria. it literally feels like it isn't supposed to be there.

MtFs who can't get access to the surgery sometimes attempt to castrate themselves and bleed to death in the process.

Y también se podría decir: "Todo el mundo va a morir, pero algunos morirán torcido."

I know there are plenty of negative comments that will be posted in this thread by those who would not do so had they had a chance to know him.

We're not saying he was a bad person, only that he was obviously crazy. Which is not in itself a bad thing. Now you say that not only did he hurt no one else by his expression of craziness, but also in other ways he kept you from going crazy.

Now I feel bad.

Valiente: GoldSpider: Newsflash: People who do stuff like this are not well.

Do more people mean more freedom or less? I'm confused about that. Otherwise, "this."

So "stopping suicides" is a bit of a conundrum for me, like voting against a city-run casino where the collective debt is reduced thanks to the gambling problems of out-of-towners.

Bit of a dilemma.

There is no better T-shirt slogan than "Save the planet: kill yourself."

It's the feeling of you're in the wrong body, you've got the wrong senses, that everything is just off.

This is more like it for me.

Well he's about as much of a tiger as a TG person is a memeber of the opposite gender.

Chuck Ruffcorn: Furries. Weird.

I bet the tiger was on the horse--a furry with the syringe on top, if you will.

Maybe to kill the pain of all those procedures.

And he wasn't a furry, he was an inky. Please make a note of it.

ummm, funny much?
