Are the VT coaches not watching their own film on this guy?

They're almost certainly aware, but it's not like they can just go replace him with a trade or on the FA market. Maybe he's got great hands and blazing speed and they can't afford to cut that aspect of his game, even if his woeful blocking skills leave something to be desired.

LoL...googled the guy, and found this gem:

"WR Marcus Davis says leadership void is partly to blame for Virginia Tech's struggles"

No, Marcus...I'd venture to say that there might not be a leadership void, but there is definitely a surplus of biatchness, and it starts with you.

2012-11-13 08:50:50 AM
Unless of course he meant that the coaches aren't being leaders because they haven't benched his sorry ass yet for playing like a 5 year old girl with fragile bones...maybe that's the leadership void he was referring to...

To say his blocking skills are woeful suggests that it is just a problem with technique, this guy is clearly just a big p#ssy and afraid of any contact.

Assign him to only return coverage for one game and see if he want's to try harder on the offense.

/atleast don't run the ball to his side if he is this useless

I have a hard time believing that Beamer lets him get away with that on a regular basis. Is this a consistent thing or was he just rattled early by the FSU defenders?

It's also possible that he just doesn't know what the hell to do to block effectively, but that again seems unbelievable for some playing under Beamer.

Maybe someone got into his head about how easily he can get injured?

2012-11-13 10:15:56 AM
As any observant VT fan can tell you, MD has a reputation for dogging it on plays. He's been doing this all season and fans have been getting on the coaches about it for weeks to no avail. While it sucks to see your team called out in this way, here's hoping Beamer finally does something about it.

Even if you know nothing about blocking, "hit the guy in front of you" should be easy enough to pick up.

See, I think that these videos would be a lot better if they cut out the plays where he doesn't block but the player got tackled by the defensive line. Stick to the ones where being a b*tch clearly hurt his team.

/the bright side is that he'll never get called for holding or an illegal block in the back, I suppose

Seriously. Normally you can expect VT and Miami to be pretty good, and Georgia Tech can be solid every so often. Rarely do you see that kind of across-the-board mediocrity though.

2012-11-13 10:27:47 AM
So they have the next Randy Moss on their team?

2012-11-13 10:38:16 AM
More than "not blocking", he gives up on plays way too early. Far too many times I've seen him walking around before the play is over. Even if you don't get a hand on anybody you should show some type of hustle until your teammate is down.

2012-11-13 11:08:13 AM
VT is the most consistently over rated team in college football. This shouldn't shock anyone.

Interesting link. At first I thought that he was just another senior who quit on his team because things were not going well. Now we see that he is a whiny mouthy jerk who quit on his team. He's got good size (6'4" 230) and all he has to do is to make an effort to stand in the way if he doesn't want to hit someone, and he can't even be bothered doing that. What a loser.

The fact that Duke is in contention should shame the ACC into bowing out of the automatic bids when the playoffs start in 2014.

It's not like a WR knows in advance that a DL player will make the tackle, so the WR ought to block every play as though it will be run behind him.

Not shown in this video, but similarly disappointing is that EVERY time the ball comes his way and he fails to make the catch, he will beg for a PI call. Often he will feign injury when the call doesn't come.
It's really sad, seeing as he's possibly the most gifted WR the school has ever had.

There are many fans that have reached the point where we feel it's time for Beamer to consider retirement. The special teams have been in decline for years, the offense has been putrid for nearly a decade, and yet Beamer refuses to acknowledge the problem, always saying the team is "just a few blocks away from executing". He won't make any significant changes to his coaching staff, and the similarities to Bowden's last few years are hard to ignore. It's sad to say, but at this point he's becoming more of a detriment to VT football than an asset.

That was so disgusting I couldn't make it through the whole video.

Seriously, if I were coaching this asshole, he'd be warming the bench and I wouldn't give a shiat about how much the dropoff would be by going to the next guy in the depth chart.

If he's hoping to go to the next level...the CFL might be a viable option. Unless, someone's zonked out of their skull no NFL team will even consider this loser.

Article says blocking is no fun. I disagree. It's especially fun when your target thinks the play is going one way, then it goes the other. Pretend to miss blocking him and let him run chasing the first movement, then, when the reverse develops, he changes direction and BAM you're in the perfect position to just level him.

(Also, my high school team tended to throw interceptions. I got a few epic tackles on those as the non-target receiver. The interceptor's all excited and beginning to look down the field then BAM!)

Nah, when it's pointed out Beamer will probably just have the same look of incredulity/confusion he has whenever a call goes against the Hokies.

/To be fair, any number of coaches do this, but somehow the way Beamer does it is particularly enjoyable.

What a terrible season it's been. This is the first one in recent memory that I don't even try to go out of my way to watch their games. This must be what begin a Chiefs fan feels like. On the plus side, someone will be losing their job over this entire debacle.

Agreed. It's an awesome chance to pop those little shiats who have been chirping non stop trash talk and who take every opportunity to clutch, grab, and trip you up every play. If you put them on there ass a couple times they tend to back off coverage a bit so you get cleaner releases too.

Did anyone else read the text after the video in the voice & inflection of an old man explaining that, in his day, he walked to school in three feet of snow, up hill, both ways, and was grateful for the experience?

We know - he's a prima donna. We get it. He's not going to put up with some coach giving him orders to block, and he's not going to take one for the team, not when he thinks his job is just to touch the ball. Hell, give that kind of work to folks that can't catch, that's what he's saying - he has better things to do.

Or so he thinks. Years later, pulling baskets out of the Fry-O-Lator, as he wonders why he's pulling a double shift after everyone else has left for the party, he'll look back on his college days and, maybe, contemplate the notion that he should've been willing to put a bit of skin in the game.

Interestingly, I was reading about David Wilson (Giants RB) earlier on the ESPN NFL blogs:

"Jenny Vrentas looks specifically at the case of Wilson in this story for The Star-Ledger . In it, the Giants' coaches explain that Wilson still has much work to do on blocking, blitz pickup, catching the ball, etc. These were things Wilson was not asked to do in Virginia Tech's offense, where someone like Martin comes out of a pro-style offense at Boise State and may be more NFL-ready right away:"

So it seems like VT doesn't really bother with asking their players to do anything.

IAmRight: So it seems like VT doesn't really bother with asking their players to do anything.

I can tell you the fanbase is EXTREMELY pissed off at the coaching staff and not simply because this is a bad season. The problems have been evident for years now, but the coaching staff always dismissed them (and the fanbase) because of 10 wins against mediocre competition year after year. The national media has joined in criticizing the offense, the preparation of players for the NFL, and the reputation for playing down to the level of competition and choking in big games, and the coaches continue to bury their heads in the sand. Couple that with an extremely unpopular lame-duck AD who is antagonistic towards his own fanbase, and there are some major problems developing with VT football. They may be in for a very bad couple of years until the entire athletic department gets some new blood.

2012-11-14 05:10:53 AM
For someone who "used to play WR back in the day", the author, while having a point on a lot of these plays, seems to mistake designed movement for avoiding blocking a few times in that video.

He did flat out not block a couple of times though, but it looks like the author is trying to use plays where that doesent happen to embelish it a tad.

Oh well, if he actually tried on each play, this would not be an issue.
