basemetal: A friend of mine called me from a gun show this weekend. Said ammo prices had damn near doubled over last year's prices. Idiot's drive that market increase, give it two years and prices will go down again.

Is there a special line at the gun store for people who aren't raving lunatics but just want to buy a gun at the regular price?

Maybe if you can stare at a picture of the President for 60 seconds without turning red you can get the "reasonable person" price.

Doom MD: I was dreading something like this happening. I was in my local gun shop the day after the election looking for some solvent. The Herp Derp patrol was in a frenzy. I wanted to get an AR15 for xmas but if the prices are insane forget it. This is why we cant have nice things. Btw, I saw the debates, I thought Obama and Romney both sort of dismissed the gun debate question. Has Obama actually said he'd reinstitute the AWB? That was a real piece of garbage legislation.

President Obama did explicitly endorse a renewed "assault weapons ban" fraud during the second Presidential debate.

Additionally, you have approximately three minutes to purchase this AR-15 for $725.

I wanted to do my part, especially since my range is having their once a year members sale this evening.
I had talked myself into a nice little Taurus 992 Tracker. (I shoot a lot, and love my 22's!)
Just called them, and they are sold out!
// so much for trying to do my part!

Tell me about it. I was going to wait until my next paycheck to buy some bulk ammo for my ever-expanding Mosin Nagant collection, but when I went to my favored online ammo supply shop I was greeted by a long letter on the front page pre-apologizing for their slow response time and low stock due to extraordinarily high demand and an unforseen immediate spike in wholesale costs as of Nov 6.

So I guess I'll have to take a bite early just to avoid being left out. Thanks, you empty-headed SHTF wet dream fantasists. When I grow up, I wanna be just like you!

I go to the shows from time to time, and there's always signs out in front of various booths telling people to hurry up and buy before *insert democrat name* takes them away.

Fact is, your crazy to blow all your money buying up as much as you can. If there's a war on our soil, there will be plenty of people shoving in to your hands, better weapons than you can legally buy today.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea to have a few of them yourself with lots of ammo, but don't be frightened in to blowing all your disposable income on a big stockpile.

It's very legal and a lot of people, myself included, do it. For larger caliber stuff, say 308 Win and up, you can save ~60% off store bought. For smaller stuff, the savings is less. For 25 auto and 9 mm, it probably isn't worth it unless you're going to set up to reload thousands of rounds. I mostly hand load .223 Remington with match bullets for about two thirds of what Wal*Mart sells the crappy stuff for and they shoot inside a half inch at 100 yards. Of course a 'tack driver' rifle helps :)

It was only then that it struck me that the place had been emptied by the raving nutbags. I just had to shake my head and laugh.

$6.49/ 25 box. They were around $4.50 back in the early 90's. 9 mm $10.95/ 50 box. Up from $9.00 during the same time period.

ZOMG, skyrocketing!

Where is he? Last year, at a Georgia gun show, I bought 1000 rds 9mm ($220) and 500 rds .40 ($135) As of today, those prices are exactly the same, both at the show and over the 'net.

Sept 2011, from a different retailer, I bought I bought 1000 rds 9mm ($172) and 500 rds .40 ($110) As of today, those prices are $20 higher over the 'net.

I'm not seeing the doubling prices and running-out-of-ammo situation. I can order thousands of rounds of ammo today for almost the same cost as I paid last year. I don't see why other people, with access to the same websites, are unable to do the same.

"What I'm trying to do is to get a broader conversation about how do we reduce the violence generally. Part of it is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced." --Barrack Obama

Then Mr. President, you are a moron, or at least so steeped in nonsensical political rhetoric, you can't see the facts.

Chicago, the place where you, Mr. President cut your political teeth, has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation. It also has one of the highest murder rates, violent crime rates, and highest incidents of gun violence.

Across the US, generally speaking, the places that have the strictest gun control laws have the highest violent crime rates. During your administration, Mr. President, the number of semiautomatic rifles on the streets of the US has skyrocketed, as have the number of semiautomatic pistols that come equipped with clips that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition. If what you are saying is true, the US should now resemble Beirut during the high of the civil war there in the 1980s. In reality, the national violent crime rate has declined.

www.fbi.gov

At best, there is no correlation between gun laws and the violent crime rate, if anything it is a negative correlation.

You, Mr. President, have work out a plan to see that trillions in debt is repaid. You have to work out a budget and get it through Congress that is balanced or at least heading in that direction just once during your time in office. We have enemies in foreign lands who have stated that they will kill us if given the chance. We have enemies both in foreign lands and domestically that poison our children with drugs and thus far we have shown no ability to stop them. The money spent on making sure Billy Bob can't get his 7.62 semiautomatic rifle with a 30 round clip would be much better spent on mental health diagnosis and treatment and programs that steer youth away from gangs and drugs in our inner cities. You, Mr. President, have other things to worry about. Leave this issue alone--it's only an issue for people who want to blame car for the drunk driver killing the soccer mom in a head on collusion.

dr_blasto: I went to a gun show last weekend with the hopes of picking up some bulk ammunition, but nobody had any. What they did have was a boatload of way overpriced AR-15s.

Most of the people with booths are right-wing nutters, but they're clearly not against fleecing other nutters whose brains are soaked with paranoia.

The stupid thing with the paranoids is:

If Republicans control the government: The Dems are going to win and ban all guns as the first order of business.

If the Dems control the government: The Dems didn't ban all guns last term, but now they are going to.

Thus no matter what, prices jump during the election. It seems to be ~6 to 8 months before a midterm election you start to see the climb and a year or so before a presidential.

/bought a bunch of bulk ammo last year and have been avoiding guns until the post election slump sometime in Winter 2013

On the one end of the scale, people are hoarding ahead of what they feel is an inevitable re-introduction of the AWB. That made pre-ban stuff (high-capacity magazines, for instance) really valuable for resale. Also they're trying to "beat the rush" that will drive up ammo prices, even though they're too late and are definitely buying high. These folks do use the ammunition they buy: hunting, range time, you know, even if the "inevitable" part of the AWB is iffy.

On the far end of the scale, obviously you have the NRA devotees that eat up every word out of La Pierre's mouth like you said. They buy guns, ammo, canned goods and watch that survivalist reality show for pointers instead of schadenfreude.

It depends a lot on what parts are on it and the condition of the barrel. Anywhere from $450 to $2500. I wouldn't mind having something decent I can take to the range without having to worry about the fact that it's a valuable collector's item. That would be about $800-$1000 worth I guess.

Wouldn't mind swapping private emails on the subject but I've never done that on Fark and pretty much don't have the time to figure it out
