Ms. Kirshner, 27, grew up on a farm in Washington State, home to goats, sheep and, yes, chickens, which when she was young she was charged with caring for. As an adult living in Brooklyn, she arranged to have chickens again, for the eggs, but mostly for fun.

They hope to find an apartment nearby, so Mr. Kumagai, 39, an artist and a graphic designer, can bike to his studio. And it must have a functional kitchen so Ms. Kirshner, who recently started a recipe publication, Sweets and Bitters Quarterly, can test recipes.

While the couple understand they may have to say goodbye to their pets, they are still trying to get the word out through friends, through real estate agents and through Twitter.

These people sound like absolute monsters. They should just kill their pets and move into a kitchen-less apartment like regular people.

[That said this type of thing is precisely why I'll help people take care of chickens and ducks but I won't have any of my own. If something happened to my house or [] forbid, the SO and I someone could easily take in our bunny. I've seen a friend try to place chickens when he got abruptly kicked off land someone had been trying to sell for McMansions... and that *wasn't* in NYC.]

Chicken coops are all the rage nowadays according to Treehugger.com, and super-modern chicken coop designs give greens, DIY types and urban fipsters (farm hipsters--back formed on bipsters or blue-collar shipsters) a choice of a wide range of artsey, super-ergonomic or just funky designs.

If they are true hipsters, then mom and dad are most likely footing the bill. In Brooklyn, most hipsters are similar to Trustafarians.

But they ARE in Red Hook. It was supposed to be the next "awesome" neighborhood but never really bounced back from the RE crash. It's possible they aren't paying much.

Chickens don't need much room. I live in a city and my neighbours have chickens in the back garden. You're not supposed to keep livestock in our street (resident association says no), but no-one else except us can see the chickens so no-one has complained. They just need a couple of yards and a roof over their heads, if you had a top floor apartment with access to the rooftop you could probably keep them there. Not a chicken expert, so there my be some reason why chickens can't live on a roof...

Forty-Three: I love how people get pissed off at hipsters for doing things their grandparents did. It's almost like they purposely chose the most benign hobbies and styles (raising chickens, wearing flannel, drinking Pabst, etc.) just so the old folks would have nothing substantial to complain about.

For me, at least, hipster hate is less about the hobbies and more about the attitude. Raise chickens and drink terrible beer for all I care, just don't expect me to automatically treat you like you're a superior person simply because you do so.

As for the couple in the article, they sound less like hipsters being contrary for the attention and more like people actually just trying to live their own life for real reasons.

I can't even read the New York Times anymore, the blind ignorance of privilege showcased in every damn lifestyle story makes me rage.

People have real problems. Get some perspective.

Forty-Three: BStorm:Meh, newly-minted adults have confidence and it sometimes comes across as brashness to older adults and tends to annoy them. This has been true of pretty much every generation ever and tewnty-something hipsters are no more/less cocksure than twenty-something Gen-Xers, Baby-Boomers, Greatest Generation-ers, Gatsyby-ers, etc. were.

Oh, I'm well aware of what youthful exuberance is like.. I was an arrogant little fark myself and it makes me smile to see someone honestly enthusiastic about what they're doing. Plus I have nieces and nephews who are just getting to that point in life themselves so I get a refresher every time I visit family. But there's a difference between being young and clueless and being deliberately rude and self-important.

CSB time: At a small club/bar where I'm a semi-regular, watching a band that a few friends play in and who had coaxed me out of my cave that night to see them. Standing at the bar waiting for my drink, when a particularly douchetastic hipster drone pushes in front of me without so much as a "pardon me" then comments to his (I think it was a guy, might have been a very homely girl) friend, "This place sure does bring in some tacky old people" (I'm mid-30's, not ancient,and most of the crowd is probably within 7-8 years of that same age) and starts joking about how "working class" most of the patrons were dressed.

Sadly for them the bartender/owner took note of the whole thing, and she has little patience for idiots. Suddenly their ID looked suspicious and she told them they would have to leave. Best part was was one of them saying the magic phrase, "Do you know who my dad is?", to which she replied "Never met the asshole but I'd be happy to throw him out too". I'm pretty sure I've heard that used elsewhere, but right then and there it was hilarious.

Forty-Three: For a few cents a day in chicken feed you can get a continuous supply of fresh eggs.

But sadly you shouldnt eat your NYC eggs. They have found Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens, the lead level in these urban grown eggs are off the charts.
