(Daily Mail)   If you're going to smuggle tobacco into the country make sure you take lots of pictures of yourself packing the stuff, and have those pics on your phone when stopped, it makes it so much easier for customs officers   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line 33

I once grabbed packets of snuff tobacco given to my college from a garbage can back in 1987 to resell with my misoriented brother-in-law...

This is a repetitive biz, no?

I ended up throwing them out.

Word.

Easy solution, stop taxing the fark out of it and you won't have to worry about smuggling.

I think that's an indication that it's time to quit smoking. If you have to travel excessively in order to be able to afford cheap smokes.

I was ordering loose tobacco all the way from Australia because it was cheaper than going to the store here in Sweden to buy it, but then customs got wise and the gig was up. Now I buy whole leaf locally, which is ridiculously cheap. About $20 for 3 months' worth.

Djibouti?

CSB time: Years ago I was visiting a friend in France, and we heading to Switzerland to hike around for a few days. The border crossing wasn't even manned on the way out of France, which was nice since my friend had brought some treats from his last Amsterdam trip. On the way back, we sure enough got stopped at the same crossing, and every bag in the car was searched. They grilled him about why he had a lighter in the car, and I thought for sure we were screwed. I could hear the guy behind me open up the zippered compartment in my friend's bag where he was keeping his illegal stuff, and.. nothing happened. Apparently they were only looking for tobacco, which we didn't have, and they didn't give a crap about anything else. Weird.

Yeah. Deny that you're carrying 650+pounds of tobacco. No, you didn't think your suitcases were a bit numerous and heavy.

Really, just act surprised. All you packed was spare underwear, how could you possible know?

That would be the intelligent thing to do. You're not going to be able to get politicians to do stuff intelligently, think things through, or consider the principle of unintended consequences.

That's pretty much good advice, no matter what crimes you're committing.

Don't take pictures of yourself smuggling cocaine. Don't label your folders of kiddie porn "NAKED PRETEENS!!!" Don't post videos of you & your buds robbing convenience stores on Facebook. Don't Tweet pictures of your dong to your girlfriend. It's not rocket surgery, folks.

yep, and I agree with you completely. these guys were bootlegging, pure and simple. they were a bunch of over privileged kids, smuggling something they don't really consider a hard drug or, whatever, had a grand ole time showing off how awesome they were, and got busted for doing so.

HUBRIS! they thought they were better and above other smugglers, and I for one were glad they were caught by their own stupidity.

anyone who is talking about anti prohibition stuff or taxes, is missing the point.. these jackasses were carrying on like they were cool, all oceans 11, and above the law, and got hoisted, as it were, by their own petards.

the drug doesn't matter ( if you don't count the sentencing) they were dumb-asses, and deserve scorn

I only pick up a pack every month or so, just so I can have one or two when I go to the pub, usually bum out the rest.

Congrats man. Keep at it, it does get easier. I quit cold turkey as well and it's one of the hardest things I have done. I screamed and biatched for weeks until the nicotine rage finally calmed down.

Thanks Asshat.

No he didn't... He made the case for not overtaxing it... If the price of taxed, legal pot is roughly comparable to the price of illegal street pot, most people are going to go for the legal, taxed stuff... If the tax is so outrageously onerous as to make illegal trafficking seem appealing, then the tax is too damn high! (In reality, they should be able to sell the legal, taxed stuff for much less than current street prices, even with a pretty hefty tax rate on it...)

Look at alcohol: you don't see too many illegal smugglers these days... Maybe near state borders where one state has much less alcohol tax, but even then it's generally fairly tame and no one worries too much about it... But, tobacco? Some states are just nuts with their tobacco taxes! Someone in Mass. could pay about $8.49 for a pack of cigs, or they could dash across the border to NH and pay only $4.86... And, those poor bastards in NY where the price is $12.50 a pack would do just about anything to import illegal tax-free cigs! When you have insane and wildly varying tax rates like that, of course it's going to lead to smuggling...
