Heh, I do that driving cross country. Constantly calculating ETA and mileage to road sign cues. Hey, Oklahoma's a long farking state.

Here's a useless (?) math game:
When walking down the street, add up the digits on the licence plates of passing cars. Gotta do it fast. In fact, with practice it seems easier to 'let' the answer come and not block it by thinking.

The unconscious mind is responsible for performing all sorts of rote memory associations and only few of them are well connected enough to come into conscious perception. Most of them involve classifying things as good or bad (essentially a "moral" viewpoint that can be more elaborate) and then using simple inference rules like bad things cause bad things. Of course the math tables used for mental addition and multiplication are in the unconscious which is where they are accessed from, but the strange thing is that they have no emotional content.

Mental math, such as multiplying 2 2 digit numbers. is often seen as a prototypical example of conscious reasoning, however it is a vast aberration. Almost all conscious reasoning does not proceed by deductive rules but instead is an effort to find justification for whatever the emotional prejudiced unconscious feels is right.

Combine this with the "Math causes physical pain" thread from a few day s ago, and things might get interesting . . .

Okay so I guess I'm an idiot, but I've always thought when you're talking about the brain you've got conscious and subconscious. Unconscious is when you're passed the fark out. Subconscious is brain activity below the conscious level. I guess technically unconscious could be anything other than conscious...but eh.

It's also well established that your brain alerts you to weirdness as a priority. The only new information is that it doesn't seem to work as fast with addition. Maybe even the brain is bored with simple addition problems.

That's because mathematical understand didn't emerge from our language or frontal functions, but our higher order spatial functions in the parietal lobe. That's why we bias counting with our hands, the primary means through which we act through space, which among other things led to the human predilection for base ten.

I have the habit of adding phone numbers when I see them. On TV, in print adds, etc. And if it adds up to a double digit, I add those together until I get a single digit. So I see 1-800-555-5555 and I say alright, that's 8 (1+8+0+0+5+5+5+5+5+5+5=44, 4+4=8). And if I'm driving, I add every number I see on the back of a particular vehicle. Phone Number, licesne plate (I'll go as far as assigning numbers to the letters where A=1, B=2 and so on), zip code, street address, whatever. Now, don't get me wrong. I don't panic or have a meltdown if I don't get the numbers added up in time (car turns, TV add goes off, whatever). It's just something that I do.
