Martinez, 38, of 4601 Rowe Drive in New Port Richey, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, DUI, throwing a deadly missile..

Don't missiles have to be self-propelled and if it isn't its more properly a "projectile"?

That's mainly why that made me laugh. It was a WTF moment. He threw a plastic knife(I assume anyway.) How would that constitute a missile?

How do they charge him with "assault on a law enforcement officer [and] throwing a deadly missile" and then toss on "obstructing an officer without violence"? How does that make sense?

I'm assuming that they need to have something on the books so they can legally hold him, and they'll let smarter people figure out what he should actually be charged with later. Probably not a real good idea, when you think about it.

TheBeastOfYuccaFlats: Don't missiles have to be self-propelled and if it isn't its more properly a "projectile"?

mis·sile/ˈmisəl/
Noun:

An object that is forcibly propelled at a target, by hand or mechanically.

So, while it's not what you or I first think of when we hear the word, pretty much anything chucked at anything else is indeed a 'missile'.

fizzled: How does that make sense?

Two different incidents? I DRTFA, but I could see him getting the first charge when he threw trash out the window, then the other when he finally gave up.

The deadly missile was for throwing the cans at the person sitting on the bench. Tossing food--or even a real knife--at a cop isn't going to make the cut; but pausing during a pursuit to hurl a six-pack at some random passer-by's head does make you look like some kind of crazy maniac.

I get the feeling that this thread is going to keeping showing me the same post as being "new" until somebody posts after it. So hopefully that will fix the bug.
