considering pele hasn't held the record since 1972, i don't think he was really that worried

Pele is gonna cry himself to sleep while hugging his 3 world cups

Yep. He still needs 10 to pass Gerd, and has 9 games to do it. So it's probably in the bag, considering what a freak Messi is.

By the way, who the fark cares how many goals he scored in a calendar year?? What significance does that have to anything? Is there a trophy for it? It's like someone saying "oh yeah? Well does he hold the record for most goals scored without his shoes?"

B/c when you're better at Pele and almost as good as Gerd, that's farking crazy. It's also a way to distill consistency across teams, seasons, and competitions.

A little, yeah, but the biggest problem is that the number of games played varies dramatically depending on team success, among other things.

Still, he's scored a ridiculous number of goals.

Call me when he learns to score a GOAL in the world cup let alone wins a world cup.

Fact is the guys a big game no show at the country level.

Club teams get to beat up on opponents that are no better than MLS teams inflating the stats. More teams around the world also increases the dilution of talent.

Uh, international football is isn't as good as club football and there are plenty of shiat teams to beat up on in the WC. The World Cup hasn't been the premier football competion anywhere but in the mainstream media for years now.

If you've watched Argentina play, you'll see he has been forced into a different role on the international stage because of the lack of quality midfielders on the team.

So he's forced into more of a setup role.. like a Xavi (or more accurately Riquelme) while the mismatch of talent of having 4 guys on the field who are used to being the main scorer all trip over one another.

Now I saw them play Uruguay a couple of weeks ago, and they kept Tevez off the field and Messi was able to be more successful and score 2 and almost netted a couple more.

But the game is more popular and there are more people on earth, increasing the talent!

/your reasoning sucks

No way did he beat Pele's record because Pele counted all his create-a-player goals on FIFA '12, and he claims to have the record for goals in a calendar year with 4,729. He also counts all the times he's nutmegged his children and grandchildren.

"Son, after you were born I scored a goal for you against Glasgow Celtic."

"Did you win that game for me as well?"

"fark off, son."

Pretty sure none of Messi, Pele or Muller give a rat's ass about this one...

I think it's funny that people attack Messi for failure to produce on the International Stage for Argentina given how overall shait the Argentina National Team is.

They are stacked with attacking talent like Messi, Higuain, Aguero, and Tevez but they have a very poor midfield, and even worse defense, and their keeper is nothing to write home about. It was different for Maradona because he was an attacking midfielder in his career, so he could control the show. That was his natural position.

Messi is actually a pretty damn good midfielder when forced into the position, but his natural position is Center Forward/Winger. It's not quite the same skill set.

His performances for Argentina recently have been pretty good too. The coach seems to have made the attack click much better.
