That was an argument in central Pennsylvania when I was a kid. My dad fed me fluoride pills every day because the water wasn't fluoridated. I never got a cavity. I'm a flaming leftist, but I never got a cavity.

This was an argument not too long ago in my hometown. They eventually decided against it

Fluoridation of the water is expensive!

Oh sure, it's a small percentage compared to the money that parents will have to pay for their child's dental work, but, uh... fluoride is bad, m'kay and those people don't have the 3-5 minutes it takes to properly educate themselves.

Now they can look like the toothless hicks they act like.

The children should only drink rainwater straight from the barrel or grain alcohol. It's the only way to keep them safe.

In other news, Texas just added sugar to its water supply to encourage kids to drink it.

Next up... the purification plants! We want water the way God intended!!!

Well to be honest there really is no reason to add it to our water anyway. It works best for cavity protection as a topical as in all of our toothpaste.

There are still public water systems that don't fluoridate? How does that happen?

Or was the lack of fluoride some naturalist hippie dippie nonsense?

\Look, I'm liberal, but Portland needs to put down the bong.

I remember growing up, those of us who weren't connected to the city mains were forced to rinse with flouride at school. Nastiest shiat ever. Pretty much cavity free for my entire life, though

fluoridation is one of those rare things that right wing conspiracy theorists and left wing hippy nuts both oppose though not necessarily for the same reasons

*hangs head in shame*

I humbly beg your forgiveness for having the unprecedented mendacity to submit a duplicitous headline on the heretofore pristine edifice of truth that is, and always shall be FARK.com.

I'll just go fark myself, then...

No the reality is that after coming home to this headline, after yesterday's headline about how our derptastic teabaggers have bankrupted the state, makes me feel like I am trapped in an asylum full of crazy people who will not rest until they have rolled back the clock on several hundred years of human progress. Makes me wonder if I can ever get out of this farking state alive...

Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love. Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake. But I... I do deny them my essence.

Fluoridation of water came about when the nuclear and atomic weapons project needed somewhere to dump all of the by product fluoride leftover from production. It is not pure fluoride that is used in water. It is not necessary for your health. With a little research, one can find that areas of this country that had high naturally occurring levels of fluoride in the water, were areas where people suffered severe tooth decay, where the bones were literally eaten away in their mouth. There is so much research that proves it is harmful and still they tell us all lies. Did you know that if a young child consumes too much fluoride, it will build up in the teeth and bones, causing visible changes to the skeletal structure that are permanent including bone cancer? See link

And dental care for the poor? Not buying that excuse. Health departments offer fluoride treatments at cheap prices or even free for poor children and adults. I want to know how much money our city spends to fluoridate the water, where they are buying it from, and which rich republican is this state is lining their pockets while we fill our bellies with their poison.

God Bless.

It's not retro. It's always been an issue in Kansas. It's a 'wtf moment' when you realize the anti-fluoride people are serious.

2012-11-12 03:00:12 PM
In this case they are right. Fluoride is in the toothpaste. Tooth it but don't swallow it. Fluoride is not needed in water and IS terrible for precious bodily fluids.

I work at an environmental non-profit. We hear this about once a freaking month. I've heard it in Jersey, I've heard it in Michigan.

There is something wrong with Kansas, but this is the conspiracy theory that will never, ever, ever die and it's a nationwide thing.

Dear Jerk: It's not retro. It's always been an issue in Kansas. It's a 'wtf moment' when you realize the anti-fluoride people are serious.

It's WTF that we still allow fluoridation. Why do you think hundreds of millions of citizens buy BOTTLED WATER? They don't want the fluoride though they will use less specific answers like "It's safer to drink bottled water". Why do YOU pay for bottled water when fluoridated water is free?

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: [very nervous] Lord, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack.

General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

Correlation does not equal causation! Toothepaste has fluoride, and Dentists make you use that aweful flouride paste during visits. There is no need to be dumping this stuff in the drinking water. I mean, why not start adding iodine (a necessary nutrient so says the salt packaging), or vitamin D so those basement dwelling farkers will get some. This is just another example of the government saying they know what's best for you, and forcing it down your throat.

Fluoride should not be in the water. Why not put vitamins in there, too? Hell, why stop there? Throw in some pharmaceuticals and vaccines for good measure! While you're at it, keep it completely unregulated. It's for your own good!

Ugh. I can't believe people are alright with this...

The irony is that John Birch Society co-founder Fred Koch led the original anti-fluoridation campaign in Wichita back in the '50s/'60s, and just last week his sons Charles and David were behind the push to add fluoride to that very same water supply. Of course, fluoride happens to be one of the many fine products in the Koch catalog, so...there ya go.

I'll just ignore the strawman argument and concentrate on your factual inaccuracy.

What are EPA's drinking water regulations for fluoride?
In 1974, Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act. This law requires EPA to determine the level of contaminants in drinking water at which no adverse health effects are likely to occur. These non-enforceable health goals, based solely on possible health risks and exposure over a lifetime with an adequate margin of safety, are called maximum contaminant level goals (MCLG). Contaminants are any physical, chemical, biological or radiological substances or matter in water.

The MCLG for fluoride is 4.0 mg/L or 4.0 ppm. EPA has set this level of protection based on the best available science to prevent potential health problems. EPA has set an enforceable regulation for fluoride, called a maximum contaminant level (MCL), at 4.0 mg/L or 4.0 ppm. MCLs are set as close to the health goals as possible, considering cost, benefits and the ability of public water systems to detect and remove contaminants using suitable treatment technologies. In this case, the MCL equals the MCLG, because analytical methods or treatment technology do not pose any limitation.

I don't recall any government agents showing up at my house, shoving a funnel in my mouth and attaching a hose, but maybe they use neuralyzers so we don't remember those visits.

Both Mark Gietzen, president of the Kansas Republican Assembly, and Hall said that the anti-fluoride forces plan to continue their efforts.

"Since I am connected to the National Federation of Republican Assemblies. I'm going to try to make fluoride one of our core issues," said Gietzen, who likened fluoride to lead and asbestos. "Things that we thought were right back then maybe were not such a good idea after all. That's where we are with fluoride."

You're right. I don't remember any government agents forcing you to drink water. Or breathe air either. Maybe we should just stop drinking water, since that's so easy to do.
