IAmRight: Deneb81: And if you don't want to have a fake run on you, don't use a sellout overload blitz inside the 5. Regardless of the score.

It's a 20-yard FG attempt, what, they should try to return it in case he can't kick it the whole 20 yards?

LEAVE ALEX HENERY ALONE

PowerSlacker: You know how I know you didn't see the play before the fake field goal?

I'm just talking in general. Fun having a RB for a team that's got a huge lead throughout the game...and runs their blue-chip RB a whole 13 times.

I realize they need to build Bert up so he thinks he's an elite QB again, and that they think the computers are going to rank them higher now, and maybe they're saving Ray Rice for the Pro Bowl, but that doesn't keep me from hating them for it.

Hey, he kicked it 20 yards. He missed, but there was no return option for the Cowboys.

So you're whining because your fantasy football team lost, is that it?

If you had watched this two play sequence in real time, you would have loved it.

Play it straight up. If you want the other team to just go through the motions because the game is 'over' in the third quarter, then act like that yourself.

But as long as the losing team is trying every trick in the book to get back in the game, the winning team shouldn't hamstring themselves out of some false sense of gallantry.

So if you don't want a trick play done TO you, don't run a sellout play yourself.

Raiders kept playing 8 in the box and blitzing 1 even run blitzing. Didn't make much sense to just hand the ball back by running into a run blitz with 8 in the box.

Nah. Actually won anyway.

But yes, it's a dick move (running up the score is just that, it's a dick move. No, it's not illegal; yeah, you can say that they should've stopped it...it's a dick move) to run a fake FG while up 24 in the 4th quarter. Anyone who disagrees is pretty much either a dumbass or a shill.

Dude, it's a FG block play. What league are you watching where they don't send everyone to block a FG, especially a chip-shot in a blowout?

It's not like it's one game where they're not using him.

Oh well, at least he'll be fresh for the Pro Bowl!

Two things:

Third quarter. Third. Not fourth. The play was at 5:44 in the third - more than 20m left in the game.

It was an extra point type kick. You don't usually see the unbalanced D the Raiders showed in most FG attempts for exactly the reason shown here. A sellout overload blitz on a FG is as risky as one on regular D. They just got burned running a bad play in a bad position against a team they didn't think would take advantage. Don't play hard if you don't want the winning team to.

Oh I agree. I'll blast Cam all day on most days for under-utilizing Rice.

But not today. (And, coincidentally not last week either where they ran too much on first down against a stacked box as well)

It's not a dick move when your opponent is taunting you while they are down by 24. Like I said, you really need the full context to this story before you talk about it.

I remember reading some memes in farq when I first got on the site, but really they were explanations of headlines that already make sense as a joke on their own.

don't know the conundrum you speak of either.

That was a glorious night for the Internet. I still remember following it live with pure glee in my heart.

Fricknmaniac: There were ~21 minutes left in the game. Not including that TD, the Ravens had scored 31 points in the last 22 minutes of the game. The Ravens didn't have Jimmy Smith playing at all, Carson Palmer was already nearing a 300 yard passing day and the Ravens defense ranked in the high 20's in yards allowed.

Given all that, can you really say that the Ravens were completely unjustified in taking advantage of that opportunity (the Raiders stacked the right side)?

Kind of like Week 1 in 2011 against the Steelers when they did the same thing on an extra point when they were already leading big. That was even more justified after they had blown a big lead against the Steelers in the 2010 playoffs to lose.

Call me a Ravens homer (because I am) if you want, but given the circumstances and recent history, it's hard to say they were running up the score.

Running up the score. Nope, that was easy to say.

I didn't know both Harbaugh's were asshats. The holiday get-togethers must be a blast.

It's not running up the score in the third quarter when the other team is talking shiat at you after incomplete passes.

2012-11-12 05:37:55 PM
It is NOT the offenses job to stop scoring. It is the defenses job to stop them from scoring. There is no running up the score there is only shiatty defense. If you don't wan't people to run up the score on you don't play shiatty defense.

This goes for all levels of football.

That being said when you are far ahead it is always worth while to get inexperienced players experience. It is always a chance to practice plays you do not get to run all that often (fakes and running out kickoffs). If you can't stop a team of back ups then you have even less opportunity to complain.

Lligeret: is always a chance to practice plays you do not get to run all that often (fakes and running out kickoffs).

No. No it isn't. Although I don't care that they did it, to say it makes sense to "practice" it is ridiculous. You run trick plays to catch teams off guard. There's little point in catching a team off guard because you're already up. What's the upside? Ok, YES, you did catch this team off guard and the result now was a score you didn't need. The continuing result is that now every team you play is going to add this to their coaches film. Also, I am sure many teams can run successful fake FGs & fake punts when they have a substantial lead. So, if your goal is to practice plays with little upside in low risk situations, congrats Ravens, mission accomplished.

Baltimore was leading by 24 points at the time, technically 3 scores. With the field goal, Oakland goes down by 4 scores. With the touchdown instead, Oakland was down by...4 scores. So how exactly is scoring the TD piling on any more than kicking the field goal would have been in the first place? Are you suggesting they should have taken a knee instead?

Besides which, if the game is so "decided" that a (possible) extra 4 points on a fake is unnecessary, then how on Earth can you defend going all-out to block a "gimme" 3-pointer in the first place? Shouldn't the Raiders have just accepted their fate & lined up in standard field goal defense formation?

2012-11-12 08:09:37 PM
I thought it was kind of bush league to run up the score but the coach is a Harbaugh so it's par for the course. That being said, it's a pro game and the Raiders were talking smack even late in the game so they kind of deserved it. I do hope it comes back to bite the Ravens when they actually need to score and try the fake FG.

Harv72b: Shouldn't the Raiders have just accepted their fate & lined up in standard field goal defense formation?

It's kinda like when you're playing basketball against your little brother or your cousin - you expect him to try. But when you're clearly able to kill him whenever you want, you don't go out of your way to style on him. You just laugh at him trying to act tough and beat him like you'd beat anyone else. You don't need to throw alley-oops off the backboard to yourself just for fun.

Harv72b: So how exactly is scoring the TD piling on any more than kicking the field goal would have been in the first place?

Because you went out of your way to run a gimmick play when the FG would have gotten you the exact same four-possession lead? You realize that that argument only helps the argument that Harbaugh was being a douche, right?

/the Raiders are douches, too, of course, but no one cares about the Raiders because they've been irrelevant for a decade

There's really no counter argument there.

If you and your little brother or cousin are being paid 6 figures/year (or more) to play basketball against each other, you expect him to be able to defend properly. And if by chance you're crushing him in that particular game, you don't expect him to commit a hard foul in the paint on an easy layup.

IAmRight: Because you went out of your way to run a gimmick play when the FG would have gotten you the exact same four-possession lead?

They didn't go out of their way. It was the same personnel package they'd normally use, it was probably something they practiced over the course of the week based on a particular look Oakland was apt to give on field goal tries. They saw that look & ran the play.

You (or anyone) can look at that play and see a douche move, or you (or anyone) can look at that play and ask why Oakland wasn't in position to defend it. If someone pulls that off against Baltimore later this season I don't start railing against the opposing coach, I start railing against our own coach for putting us in that position to begin with, and against the players for failing to stop it.

So you're saying it's cool to be a douche because the Raiders were being douches.

That's fine, but teams with talent should be aspiring to be above the Raiders' level.

Technically it's now the third time, and I didn't say it after the second time (the response that was posted after the first time was in the middle of being typed before I saw the first correction).
