Those four points could be all the difference in staying ahead of Alabama in the BCS rankings.

Missing from the article:

Asked if the Raiders seemed upset with his score that put the Ravens up by 31, Koch replied, "Oh, not that I know of. I was too busy doing high-fives and spiking the ball."

We need to have a fark's greatest hits farq. Dynamite Monkey, Bigz2k/ballsack conundrum, etc.

There were ~21 minutes left in the game. Not including that TD, the Ravens had scored 31 points in the last 22 minutes of the game. The Ravens didn't have Jimmy Smith playing at all, Carson Palmer was already nearing a 300 yard passing day and the Ravens defense ranked in the high 20's in yards allowed.

Given all that, can you really say that the Ravens were completely unjustified in taking advantage of that opportunity (the Raiders stacked the right side)?

Kind of like Week 1 in 2011 against the Steelers when they did the same thing on an extra point when they were already leading big. That was even more justified after they had blown a big lead against the Steelers in the 2010 playoffs to lose.

Call me a Ravens homer (because I am) if you want, but given the circumstances and recent history, it's hard to say they were running up the score.

The Ravens don't need to justify it at all. When dumbasses talk shiat down 24 points like the Raiders were, they deserve to be humiliated further.

You can't run up the score in a professional football game. No need to defend your boys.

The other team is getting paid to stop you. Not your fault they can't. Of course, if your boys had gotten someone hurt while running that fake FG or throwing bombs while up 20, that would be Harbaugh's fault.

Personally I'd rather see my guys seal the game, run out the clock, get ready for next week. But it isn't running it up to keep scoring, just questionable coaching.

Realistically, yes, there is. No one cares if you run it up within the standard parameters of the game. But going out of your way to use a trick play in what would be a four possession game in the 4th quarter is a dick move.

With the depleted defense the Ravens are currently sporting, I don't think any lead is really safe. That being said, the play surprised me, but regardless of whether or not it's on film, the Ravens now know they can do one in a live game, and I think that's a good move.

I don't know if it's a "dick move' so much as it is a dumb move. Why give away the play? The Ravens aren't exactly that scary of a team. There is a very good chance they may need that play later on in the season.

MBTAhole: Why give away the play?

I'm not sure that there's any team in the NFL which doesn't have a "holder runs up the middle" fake field goal in their playbook.

Fake FGs are not really part of the offense.

2012-11-12 03:53:36 PM
At least when my team executes trick plays in the fourth quarter of a dominant win, it's in order to troll Tebow by having our left-handed WR throw for more yards than Tebow does in the game. Picked up as many TDs with that throw as the Jets' offense has in the last three weeks, too.

Perhaps trash-talking and late-hitting the Ravens should go in the same category as calling the kettle black.

Still, it's pretty stupid to talk trash when you're getting your ass handed to you.

The players on the FG team aren't professionals? They aren't paid to be prepared for fake FGs, which are, in fact, standard parameters of the game?

Yeah they are. That's why it's not running up the score. That implies your opponent is helpless to stop you because of some overwhelming advantage you have over them, like when Alabama drops 70 on whatever cupcakes they play that don't have Division 1 athletes (Kentucky, I think they're called).

It's the NFL...the Raiders are collecting checks too, and let's not pretend they were helpless. They just sort of gave up when they were out of reach of winning the game. If they don't like it they should go play intramurals. Brother.

Now, dick move? Maybe so, karma tends to be a biatch, and the Ravens will be on the wrong side of an asskicking like that eventually. Also questionable coaching because like I said, if someone gets hurt on that play Harbaugh looks like a jackass and maybe ruins the season to put up 50 points on a team that won't see 8 wins let alone the playoffs. But it isn't running up the score.

The Ravens were on the downside of an asskicking three weeks ago in Houston.

And if you don't want to have a fake run on you, don't use a sellout overload blitz inside the 5. Regardless of the score.

Someone cried a few years ago about the Ravens passing the ball late in a blowout - St Louis I think. Same thing - don't sellout run blitz then get pissed that the other side keeps passing. I don't see how it's a dick move if you're just taking what a desperate opponent is giving you.

Danny Amendola and Dashon had no idea you could tie in a game. I bet they wouldn't care if you pulled a fake on them.

2012-11-12 04:38:55 PM
The Raiders special teams are the worst. Early this season they couldn't punt and then they give up a field goal cover TD and kickoff return TD this week. Perhaps they need to invest in all three phases of the game. Weird given that it's the same (only?) team that drafted a kicker in the first round.

It's a 20-yard FG attempt, what, they should try to return it in case he can't kick it the whole 20 yards?
