A friend of a friend was a Cabela's north of Dallas over the weekend and, according to the guy at the gun counter, it was Gunday Sunday, and the place had been packed ever since Wednesday.

Apparently people are stocking up on firearms, just so the U.N. can take them away any moment.

"American culture war has been markedly intensified," diagnosed George Weigel at National Review, "as those who booed God, celebrated an unfettered abortion license, canonized Sandra Fluke, and sacramentalized sodomy at the Democratic National Convention will have been emboldened to advance the cause of lifestyle libertinism through coercive state power"

I just don't understand how they could have lost. Tax cuts for the wealthy, no abortion OR birth control, a WHITE person for god's sake, and mandatory gun ownership. Everything an American voter could want. Where did they go wrong? How did their message not resonate with the people?

/sarcasm, just in case that isn't blatantly obvious.

National Review's Jonah Goldberg attacked statistician Nate Silver's prediction that Obama would win, well, all the states he turned out to win. "The truth is that any statistician can build a model," sniffed Goldberg, perhaps thinking of the scale-model Munsters car he built in grad school.

Hey, last election I was promised that I'd be in a FEMA camp by now, with ACORN workers administering the camps. And I was promised a lovely jailer who would make my life of drudgery for the masses seem a joy in comparison to the toils I would be forced to perform for her.

When my FEMA trailer gets here, I'll believe in the DOOM that is being bandied about...

If only married people voted, Romney would have won in a landslide. If only married religious people voted, you'd need a word that means something much bigger than landslide. Obviously, Obama got some votes from the married and the religious (such people can marry their interests to the state, too), but as a generalization, the Obama coalition heavily depends on people who do not see family or religion as rival or superior sources of material aid or moral authority.

Go fart on a dick, Jonah Goldberg.

Indeed. And their response is that they need to change the way voting goes to make it more `fair' to them? How about NOT distancing yourself from absolutely any homosexual, minority or woman who votes in their own interests.

I'm a liberal, and I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome, but I truly would like to see a competitive alternative out there that doesn't massively suck as hard as any party has ever sucked.

The problem with the current crazypants trajectory of the GOP is that it drags the whole system to the right. Obama, for example, is more conservative in many respects than Richard Nixon.

Imagine Obama proposing a new massive, sprawling government bureaucracy that focuses on hippie environmental issues, or opening relations with a major communist power.

The result is issues important to the real left get drowned out by the sensationalist noise coming from the far right.

It does make me wonder what they think their policies offer to the average voter. It seems as if the Republicans knew this presidential election had to be won. They did as much vote suppression as possible and still lost.

The battleground states, whose electoral vote decided the election (including winning margin) were:
Wisconsin (Obama +7%)
Nevada (Obama +7%)
New Hampshire (Obama +6%)
Iowa (Obama +6%)
Colorado (Obama +5%)

Wisconsin and Iowa will likely remain battleground states in the next two presidential elections due to the large number of working class white males. That's 16 electoral votes Romney lost due to "Let Detroit go bankrupt." Those states could swing back red.

On the other hand, New Hampshire, Nevada and Colorado are harbingers of times to come. Nevada and Colorado have rapidly increasing Latino populations. Colorado's Latino population has grown 42 percent in 12 years, helping to transform once-reliable Republican areas into swing counties now leaning toward Democrats. Add Florida's 29 electoral votes due to a lot of extremely angry Black and Latino voters who understand their voting rights were being screwed over by Republicans in 2012 and you don't see much hope for a party whose one consistent message has been "more money for the rich."

Those changing demographics are going to force BOTH parties to change. The problem is, the Democrats seem far more open to change, as noted with Obama becoming the first sitting President to state that homosexuals ought to be allowed to marry, and subsequently the first President elected after making such a statement. He himself stated that his position had 'evolved'. Now maybe he did some sincere soul searching, or maybe his pollsters think that was to his political advantage to say, either way the end result is the same. To be fair, the GOP bandwagon APPEARS to be reconsidering their stance on immigration and other issues that effect Latino voters, only time will tell if they follow through with that, or even if they do if they will win back anyone.

I suspect Virginia could be swung back red, IF the GOP give up the pants-on-head crazy levels of conservatism; stop trying to push so much to the insane hard right on abortion, but fight hard to preserve the status quo on it a little longer. That might be enough for Ohio and Florida, also. The short-term difficulty with this approach would seem to be that the crazies appear unwilling to back down the slightest from abject ideological purity.

Colorado was the "tipping point" state. This is the problem for the Republicans going forward. Even if Romney had won Virginia AND Ohio AND Florida, given his other victories, he would have lost the election.

The crazies gave the Republicans most of their state victories in 2012. Republicans can't give up on their Christian right stands on pro-choice, civil rights, and other socially conservative policies. The Republicans are not financially conservative. They really, really want tax cuts for the rich, no matter what it does to the deficit. How is that financial conservatism? For better or worse Republicans are the socially conservative party.

Were the Republicans to abandon abject ideological purity, they would lose to the next George Wallace who could again come from the Democratic party. If they abandon tax cuts for the rich, they lose their multinational corporations support. If they abandon invading on Iran, they lose their corporate support.

If I were a Republican, I would point out the only choice is to abandon the Christian right agenda, abandon the neo-con agenda, abandon the trickle-down corporate agenda and return to being the party of financial conservatism. Period.

Limbaugh today seems to be suggesting that the Republicans stand their ground and don't give in to Democratic party immorality. I think he's saying the Republicans should move further to the right....but it's difficult to tell sometimes. right now he's expanding on a theory as to why he's NOT to blame for Romney's loss. which is very odd because nobody I know is blaming Rush Limbaugh for Romney's f*ck ups.

fta Obama will make some weak gesture toward taxing the rich or something, and they'll all rush the fence and bark like junkyard dogs. But as soon as the outrage has passed, they'll trot back to their bowls and chow down.

Laugh and point at their pitiful sobbing, and call them ineffectual and leashed yard yappers. Ok. Works for me.

Handy dandy dog-whistle-to-English dictionary:

"The electorate has changed." = "There sure are a lot of n*ggers running around voting."
"This isn't the country it used to be." = "There sure are a lot of n*ggers."
"generations who attended public school" = "n*ggers"
"We have to change direction." = "More white people need to procreate."
"Take our country back." = "Take our country back from the n*ggers."
"Romney would have one if only X had voted." = "We should take the vote away from everyone but X. Especially n*ggers."
"Americans chose socialism" = "n*ggers like free stuff."
