We seriously need social scientists for that?

Being cool is simply having the ability to suppress your emotions and immediate reaction to positive or negative situations. 3 chicks at one time? Don't get all Ricochet Rabbit; play it cool. Some fool spills a drink on your shoe? Don't go bad and start getting all loud; play it cool.

"How to be Cool" by Dr. Nimrod

2012-11-12 12:19:58 PM
Cool is all about your attitude towards it.

To quote Terry Pratchett:

The monastery of the Monks of Cool is found in a laid back valley in the lower Ramtop mountains. They are a reserved and secretive sect and believe that only through ultimate coolness can the universe be comprehended, that black goes with everything, and that chrome will never truly go out of style. To become a fully accepted Monk, a novice is given the following test. Several outfits are laid out in front of him and the tester asks, "Yo, my son, which of these outfits is the most stylish thing to wear?" The correct answer is "Hey, whatever I select".

be in a relationship with a very pretty lady that is cool. that way, the more uncool you are, the more of a mystery you are to people who see the two of you, wondering, what on earth would compel her to be with him? that mystery makes you cooler.

How does the word cool remain cool? All other words fall in and out of favour, but cool is timeless, like denim.

"Empty your mind.
Be formless, shapeless, like water.
If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup.
You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle.
You put it into a teapot, it becomes the teapot.
Water can flow, and it can crash.
Be like water, my friend..." - Bruce Lee

I am a classically trained Sociologist, which I means I adhere to the Fonzie school of thinking.

People just don't get it. Cool has nothing to do with wearing a leather jacket and saying some stupid catchphrase like "Ayyyyyy!" Hell, the real-world Henry Winkler is a soft-spoken Jewish thespian, about the diametric opposite of the Fonz. And cool has nothing to do with being a heavy-lidded borderline sociopath a la Robert Mitchum.

And cool has absolutely NOTHING with wearing Tommy Hilfiger shirts, Calvin Klein underwear, or a Budweiser cap. In fact, wearing stupid clothing like that makes you a corporate tool which is pretty uncool. Would Tommy Hilfiger be caught dead wearing a shirt with YOUR name on it?

There's only been one metric for being cool, IMO, and that's just being yourself. Being yourself and not giving into the tiresome herd instinct and--this is important--having enough healthy self-esteem to not care what insecure people think of you. I'm eccentric as hell and if somebody doesn't approve of my oddball lifestyle, that's just tough noogie...

Perhaps. If somebody is grumpy or flaky all the time, I agree they should change. On the other hand, I think some people are annoying because they're trying very hard to be like the Fonz, or Steve McQueen, or somebody else instead of being themselves. I remember one time my uncle basically admitted that he was tired of projecting a hard-ass persona because it meant getting into a lot of fights he could have avoided.

'Nother random thought: I'm a big fan of silent movies and am kinda familiar with fads of the 20s. It's funny how things like spats on shoes, flat-chested flapper breasts, ukelele playing, etc. that seemed so cool back then look really dorky right now. Even looking back to my own childhood in the 70s, the insane obsession people had for expensive designer jeans and *ugh* disco looks pretty silly nowadays. Again, wearing the *right* clothes don't make you cool, it just means you're a slave to the herd instinct...

Being yourself makes you cool... if you are cool.
If you aren't cool way down in your creamy center (most of us ain't) then frankly you are SOL (most of us are)

However that don't mean we can't own what we are, and while that might not be cool, owning what one is is its own good thing.

Article made me even more stupider. At this stage of my life that's a crime against humanity.

Example; World, James Dean is cool. Me, James Dean a hack actor and a really bad driver.
Example; World, Libraries not cool. Me, libraries a fark'in cool.

I am nerd and accept it. That's cool.

It's funny when some one decides that nonconformity equals cool, then quickly goes out and strictly conforms to the standards of some smaller, obscure subset of people.

I don't see any of those things as cool. Definitely not the first three. I see people who do those things as insecure, stupid and unable to think for themselves or resist peer pressure.

PirateKing: Cool is all about your attitude towards it.

To quote Terry Pratchett:

As always, there is no wisdom that can't be summarized with a Terry Pratchett quote.
