I'm not a fan of dragonfruit at all. It's a succulent, and the fruit just isn't appetizing to me. There's a bad woody flavor to it that is just off-pudding.

Ah, snakeskin fruit. It's actually pretty good (had a few while in Indonesia, though the mango and mangosteen are my favorites there). Once peeled, it looks like giant cloves of garlic, is really crunchy, and tastes like an apple, though much less juicy. If you've never been to Indonesia, I highly recommend it... one of my favorite countries to visit.

"Also called snakefruit, this strawberry-sized, fig-shaped fruit comes encased in vivid, nutty-brown scales, not unlike that of a cobra or python."

I'm out.

/Snakefruit?!?

After hearing horror-stories from a friend of mine who lived in Malaysia for a year, I don't even want to get near those things. Evidently, huge truckloads of them would come fresh out of the jungle and you could smell the stench for miles.

2012-11-12 08:10:33 AM
They aren't that great. Mangosteen, Rambutan and especially Lychee (chicken-tongue seed) are better.

Spaced Lion: huge truckloads of them would come fresh out of the jungle and you could smell the stench for miles.

Absolutely true; the smell overpowers the market when a new shipment arrives. It's like fried vomit in plum sauce, and somehow it's 'the king of fruit' there.

Now Mangosteen, there's a suitable fruitking. ;)

I suppose it might be if you like the taste of grapefruit and propane with the texture of rancid custard.

/Had to eat durian once.

Like when pudding is left out too long. It's a way of conveying disgust.

Not to be confused with the Scandinavian hipster's choice salmiak.

You shut your whore mouth.

And I saw this stuff in Bali, but now it's gone mainstream. I'm more into lychee these dyas.

Now there are fruit hipsters? Come on Fark, now you're just showing your age.

2012-11-12 10:31:04 AM
"This intense fruit walks a fine line of ripeness that is so volatile that it will often become overripe and sweaty even before it reaches maturation."

So it's not going to travel well from Indonesia to the U. S.

People who loosely use the word hipster are now to describe "someone who likes something I don't" are now officially more annoying than actual hipsters.

Funny, that's what the old 3-toothed Laotian guy said about the snake whiskey. ;)

Seriously, you're braver than myself. I couldn't get past the smell, but I didn't mind the taste of the dodol 'candy' version at all.

Hey now... Lao "Energy drink" rocks. If you get it without snakes, spiders or scorpions in it it's the best booze that you can get for under 1 cent per deciliter.

/ not kidding. A fifth of "White Champa" costs about 75 cents.
