I spent 5 and a half years on the Ranger, leaving in Jan. of '89. So while I was not there for the pic it brings back a lot of memories. Parts of Top Gun were shot in the Ranger while I was a crew member. Some of the Ready Room scenes were shot on board. It was strange that although there were (my memory may be failing me) 9 Ready Rooms on board they chose not to use any of them. Rather, they converted one of the mess areas for shooting those scenes.

The B-52's deck angle in level flight has always weirded me out, but it's particularly evident in these pictures. Awesome airplane.

And as a guy that was on board during the time of this alleged incident, I'm calling "smells like bullshiat."

I don't know shiat about B-52 operations, but I've been on deck for some real close flybys by many aircraft both foreign and domestic. An airplane that close to the water would be running spray behind it no matter how fast it was flying. And I can't believe that even the Airforce fellas would fly that close to the deck in an aircraft that big.

But mostly, had that thing gone by at that range at that altitude, people would have come by and said "Hey did you see that B-52 flyby? Holy shiat!"

But they didn't.

Yep that's the one. 1994 Fairchild AFB practice. I wonder if it's him, seems like his "signature" move. Flying that way for training or ops is one thing. Putting your aircraft and crew (somebody's husband/father/son) in danger because you think it's cool is a dick move. The pilot should be kicked in the jimmies often and with great force until he gets the message. Read the investigation portion on the wiki entry "1994 Fairchild Air Force Base B-52 crash." As always, you can only tie the record for flying low.

When they were investigating his shenanigans they ran across a tape of him doing a low flyby near a mountain range/steep hill. Investigators said that after they analyzed the video they found that the lowest part of the B-52 was less than 6 feet off the ground.

Of course he went a bit lower on his last flight... and not a Photoshop.

I saw this once in person in Utah during the 90's. We where at a fort in southern Utah I dont remember the name. Across from the fort was a large valley. We just happened to be looking to the south and saw a dark spot in the sky. Next thing we know a b52 came down to aprox 50ft off the ground. We could see the pilot wave to us. Both of our jaws where dropped. Even at air shows we had to seen anything like it. The the second one came in. We where in shock we forgot to take out the camera.

Not that strange. The ready rooms almost certainly didn't provide sufficient space to fit a film crew.

You weren't there. I was. The space they converted was the First Class Petty Officer's Mess area. The available space wasn't any bigger than some of the Ready Rooms and possibly smaller than some.
