(Some Ranting Guy)   To improve ratings, primetime ESPN SportsCenter to include more debates, fewer game highlights and analysis. "Viewers look at jerks ranting. They snooze through NHL lockout discussions"   (sportsrantz.com) divider line 6

I would have gone in a different direction. One that involved more sports highlights.

ESPN turned into the TMZ of Sports. I cant stand watching a second of any of their talking heads.

SportsCenter has been crap for at least 8-10 years with all their sponsored "features". I stick to Highlight Express, which is, ironically, what SportsCenter used to be.

/shame America doesn't have Gillette World Sports Special
//ESPN ignores sports for which it doesn't have a broadcast contract

And ask CNN how their "let's debate this...oh we'll have to leave it right there" format is working for them now?

After a while the plebs catch on and ratings go down.

The way I look at it, when I need rational sports talk I go listen to sports radio where I know that most of what is spoken isn't completely off fringe. First Take is like watching Man vs Food, the premise is horrible yet somehow throughout the train wreck you find yourself fascinated by the spectacle of it all. The way Smith dickrides Kobe/LeBron, the way Bayless like you said can be clueless (especially when it pisses off Stephen A) is all entertaining.

As long as people treat it as spectacle instead of actual sports coverage everybody is happy.

This article is about how ESPN1 (SportsCenter) is now going to mimic the First Take model. So now your mindless entertainment is spreading to the actual sports coverage. THAT'S the problem with it.

And everybody isn't happy. As the article notes, Actual sports journalists on ESPN1 may be getting fired so Stephen A Smith and SkipBayless and their ilk will get more air time on ESPN1.

Its the same shyt that has happened with regular journalism. It becomes infotainment, emphasis on 'tainment. It dumbs our society down.

Idiocracy gets truer and truer every day.

You know who broke the Jerry Sandusky child rape scandal and Penn State's coverup? Not any of the supposed big journalism rags or tv stations, it was a little school paper in Pennsylvania. Who broke the John Edwards affair/scandal/FEC story? National Inquirer. It was somewhere next to a big foot expose.

Our society relies heavily on the 4th estate but the press is getting dumb as shiat.

I really can't say enough how much I hate First Take.

There aren't enough words. But mainly I can PROVE to you it sucks with two special instances that both happened this year:

1) Skip Bayless is getting completely owned by Mangini. The topic was the Dallas Cowboys and Romo. Mangini makes a perfectly explained point -- how does Bayless retort? "At least I didn't get fired twice as a coach."

2) Skip Bayless getting his ass handed to him by Marc Cuban, point-by-point explaining how Bayless doesn't know wtf he's talking about.

Both instances can be seen on youtube.

Those two instances plus Stephen A. Smith yelling all the damn time are why I no longer watch First Take and all the other versions of it.

I didn't think they could find a way to show even less NHL highlights. If ESPN loses the MLB contract, are they going to just flat out ignore it as well?
