FTFA: women (with rare exception) are to be protected

When you are faced with the possible extinction of the human race.... yeah.... women need to be protected. They're the baby factories and there are no substitutes.

2012-11-11 02:08:01 PM
What? They replaced the black guy they killed with a different black guy. And now there's a black woman on the show.

PROGRESS!

I'm just wondering were all the black zombies are...... it's Georgia for crying out loud! I don't have a problem with segregated groups of survivors because it is Georgia after all but I'd expect more integration among the dead.

Its a fictional TV show based on a comic. Get over the race and gender roles crap.

Clearly, these people have never seen Time Chasers. Vermont in the future was truly terrifying.

There's a whole 'because the blacks can book it' joke to be made here that I ain't touching.

Shane stops a guy from beating his wife, so obviously the show is misogynistic. Right.

Well, looks like Lori's "choice" turned out farking over the group in about the worst possible way. Go for the goddamn RU-486 next time, genius.

White patriarchy?

Yeah. Sounds pretty apocalyptic to me.

In the first season I could never get over how scarce firearms were among the survivors. Especially in Six Toe County or wherever Rick was sheriff of. Rural Georgia should be KNEE DEEP in guns by the time Rick wakes up. Atlanta would be even more heavily armed. When the got to the CDC not one person even checked the dead army/national guardsmen for ammo or picked up their weapons.

Every survivor should look like Simon Pegg from the end of "Hot Fuzz" by now.

Oh for farks sake, people. Does every Goddamned thing have to be racially motivated? Short Round is still alive and he's tapping the hottest girl on the show.

Rick woke up some time after the apocalypse began. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if in the panic when the zombies came about most of the ammo got used up or horded.

Shostie: Rick woke up some time after the apocalypse began

How does that work? Like how long was it between the time where there was no one to care for him and he just woke up?

My hypothesis is that the African-American survivors took all the guns and ran for the coast, like T-Dog wanted to.

In today's world without zombies, Salon is always telling us how frail women are and how men are pigs and rapists and constantly harassing and brutalizing women who can't even speak up for themselves to say no, much less defend themselves or others.

So now Salon thinks the coming zombie apocalypse is going to bring in the women's studies utopia they have long sought?

I don't know, man. Dude woke up from a coma in an abandoned hospital. If I remember right it looked like it had been empty for a while. Weeks? Months?

It was never established but the infection was well underway by the time Shane barricaded Rick in the hospital room. Probably only a few days, since he wasn't horribly dehydrated.

The main characters have only a few guns because they're largely morons, even taking into consideration their genre-blindness. No other explanation. Lori's a cop's wife and she grabs...photo albums. Most of the others lived in Atlanta and apparently neither had guns nor knew how to use them. We can assume that, as someone already suggested, the redneck & gun-nut types would have immediately hoarded as much weapons & ammo they could get their hands on. Those people would try to make a stand and would no doubt get overrun. There are probably weapons stockpiled all over the place from these people but who knows where they are.

Rick went to the station house & filled a bag w/every gun in the place, which is where the group got the vast majority of the guns they currently have. Why Shane didn't do this is beyond me, but we can argue that he had his sidearm & the rifle in the car and his priorities were to protect Rick, Lori, and Carl.

Woodbury's another matter altogether. The Governor obviously knew not only how to stockpile and hoard but surrounded himself with people who knew how to use guns and who wouldn't turn on him.

This show/comic isn't solely about changes in racial and sexual attitudes, but neither series ignores the impact of racial and sexual prejudice. If anything The Walking Dead takes people who have left behind a world they knew only a little less than a year ago, and attempt to apply the standards they held in that world, to the new walker-infested world. That gives birth to the conflicts throughout the series, like Merle being a racist misogynist in the beginning who seems to calm down later, Rick who seems to be a law-giver in the beginning but whose morals become increasingly ambiguous as time goes on, Hershel who can't bear to kill his walker family or any walkers at all, but now has no trouble seeing them for what they are, Lori who was selfish and wanted instant gratification, but is now willing to give her life to keep humans alive, Carl who is a childish wanderer becoming hardened by the world around him, Carol who was weak and abused but slowly transformed into a more contributing member of the group, and so on and so forth...

This show/comic is about (or tries to be about, I guess, depending on whether you like the show or not) change of all kinds, induced by the pressure of an unknowable enemy. That said, this article completely misses the edgy point it is trying to make by ignoring what the show is about, and inserting what the author would like the show to be about.

...and as much as I don't want to dignify this argument with more responses, I should point out that in the archetypal zombie movies, Night of the Living Dead (original and remake) and Dawn of the Dead (original and remake), the black guy was the most reasonable and intelligent male in the film. They might not have survived but then no one did.

The lack of hoarding is the central complaint here. If the remaining living humans aren't doing the hoarding, who is?

T-Dog died about 182 episodes too late. There, I said it.

He was never relevant. Frankly, it would have been much more interesting if T ended up handcuffed to that roof, and Merle had taken his place in the core group all this time. His overt racism and sexism would make him a more interesting "bad guy" than Shane was, and countering his brother Daryl's essential fairness would have made for a much more dramatic dynamic.

That was actually pretty groundbreaking at the time.

Abortion is still the number one taboo on TV and in movies. It's simply not an option.

So...its trying to be accurate? I'm trying to think of a global disaster scenario that still wouldn't end with the world being dominated by white men. This depresses me, even as a white man.

Most fiction writers base their writing on the concept of "This is how I interpret to world to be" or "This is how I believe the world would be given a certain set of circumstances e.g. zombies." Some, and in my opinion, bad fiction writers approach a story with the idea of "This is how I want to world to be." All this amateur media social justice nonsense seems to come from the perspective that all writers operate under the latter position.

What the hell do you expect in a show based on a comic book?

Comic books - oh sorry, or graphic novels - aren't exactly known for their fine treatment of women folk.

Well, part of the problem there is the insistence on there being a "the black guy" in the first place. There were two black guys in the DotD remake, for example.

My issue with this article is with the author's need to see everything in sexist/racist tones. Maybe they send Glenn off to get supplies because his character has been established as someone who's good at it. And maybe that has nothing to do with his skin colour.

And just perhaps, taking the time in a zombie-infested world to try and overcome biology isn't the best use of one's time and resources.

So wait, if going back to pre-civilized conditions = no patriarchy, then how does she think the patriarchy came about in the first place?

I think what they may be going for though are the two brothers, Merl and Darryl. They were both raised to be assholes but Daryl has come to have a character arc. His care for Sophia and the group in general makes us think that he's become less of a dick than his brother. That might even culminate into a conflict between the two.

In season one there was a scene where the women complained that they were left to the laundry,,, while almost all the menfolk ventured back into the highly zombie-infested city in an attempt to retrieve Dixon, a mission for which not a single woman volunteered.

I'm still not sure if the laundry scene was a clever and subtle anti-feminism jab or shockingly clueless pro-feminist writing given the context.

Well Jeez, how are they supposed to win? Either there aren't enough black people or there are a few "token" black people. Is there a movie out there that has exactly the correct number of black people to suit everyone?

2012-11-11 06:13:55 PM
I never understood why some people complained that there were not enough minorities in HBO's Lena Dunham's "Girls". That show has main characters who are the worst people you could meet and I'd just assume it would be better to minorities featured in a more positive show. Girls is all about white privileged women behaving badly.

Maybe all the minority people in The Walking Dead Universe are safe, while the white people are barely surviving and dealing with stuff like "Why does my stupid son Carl keep wandering away from the house into zombie infested ares?"
