No, the reason the Romney lost the election was that 0bama got more votes (yeah, yeah, electoral college).
The reason why Pelosi failed in getting back the House is that the GOP got more votes.
The reason why there are so many GOP governors, is that they got more votes.

While Republicans hung onto control of the House of Representatives after Tuesday's election, Democratic candidates across the U.S. received more total votes than Republican candidates did.

While not all ballots have been counted, Democrats hold an edge over Republicans in overall votes. According to ThinkProgress, 53,952,240 votes were cast for Democratic candidates, while Republican candidates received 53,402,643. However, thanks in part to redistricting, Republicans will hold more than half the seats in the House while receiving less than half of overall votes.

I am really starting to hope that he's going to call for a second amendment solution once he realizes that he won't win. Either that or he's going to barricade himself in his Washington office until the SWAT team is sent in to extract him and his citizen volunteers that are protecting him. Mr West, please turn the derp up past 11 and show the American public who the Tea party really is.

Jesus these people are pathetic. It's not even that close of a race. The current spread is .58% according to the Florida SOS. An auto recount isn't even triggered until .5%, and historically in order to actually flip a result you have to be well within .1%.

For example, the only two result flips in recounts in the 2000s have been the Franken Senatorial race in 2008 and the Gregoire Washington gubernatorial race in 2004. Franken went in down by .007%. Gregoire went in down by .01%

In other words, West lost. Deal with it.

It is. It is the counter to the equally stupid argument that because the Republicans continue to control the House, that the majority of Americans do not agree with Obama's policies and he does not have a mandate.

I really liked...

Americans fail to understand, when their own government aids and abets endless wave of foreigners from socialist countries, Muslims, millions of illegals, dividing the once united, it's going to change their history, their elections, everything.

This is not complex.

The GOP's inability to be an inclusive political party that opens it's doors to non-whites, non-Christians and non straight folks that we see reflected in this freeper's xenophobic screed is just further proof that the GOP's current identity politics tactics are dooming them to become an increasingly irrelevant force politically with regional but no viable national aspirations.

It aint rocket surgery.

Because it's still outside the range that triggers one.

A partial recount of early ballots from St. Lucie County further narrowed Democrat Patrick Murphy's thin margin of victory over Republican U.S. Rep. Allen West, prompting the West campaign to call for a recount of all the early-vote ballots.

Murphy's total dropped by 667 votes and West lost 132 votes in the recount of 16,275 ballots from the last three days of early voting in St. Lucie County. West's net gain of 535 votes still leaves him about 0.58 percent behind Murphy in congressional District 18, which also includes Martin County and part of Palm Beach County.

A margin of 0.5 percent or closer is needed to trigger a recount under state law.

His argument that "the results" do not "add up" is accurate. Unskewed polls, anecdotal stories and gut feelings consistently forecast a victory for Governor Romney. How, then, may his loss be explained?

Yup and Condi Rice and Mia Love and Colin Powell and Dick Keyes and Herman Cain and Micheal Steele, etc, etc.

I've also seen the sea of old, white faces that filled the GOP's nomination convention and political rallies this year.

2012-11-11 07:38:45 PM

Fool_Marquis: I'm going to regret asking this:

Is anyone here: anyone at all, the least bit concerned that there were more total votes than the total number of registered voters?

Or do you doubt the veracity of this detail of the story? Townhall is probably about as reliable of a source as The Register, but it does list several verifiable facts and figures, such as the location (St. Lucie county), the registered voting population (175,554) and the number of ballots cast (247,713). This isn't hard, all we have to do to confirm or deny is contact the state's supervisor of election (Gertrude Walker), or her office. We can't do that monday because, well, federal holiday, but Tuesday we could make such contact...

I don't give a shiat about Al West or whoever is running in a given district. Not my state, so it has no effect on me. I'm much, much more worried about the state of our electoral system... either the ballot boxes were ludicrously stuffed, or else someone farked up the count and double-counted close to half the ballots.

If the latter, then yeah, they need to be fired (but probably won't be since... government job), if the former... how could we prevent such fraud from occurring again?

Anyone out there have a third explanation?

Sure. Although it wouldn't address large numbers necessarily.

Anyone who moved before the election, who legally registered prior to the election but not in time to be counted on the official registration tally, who legally registered in one precinct but legally voted in another (which is possible, but a pain in the ass), any of these would throw off the counts, such that it might appear that more people voted than were registered. It's entirely possible to register and vote the same day, because this is America and anyone legally eligible can vote; it's not like there's some kind of waiting period. If you turn 18 the day of the election, you don't have to wait another year to vote, but you might not appear on the registration count.

Now that said, it's not going to answer your question completely about how there could be 147% returns in a given area; however, it DOES point to tiny breaks in our voting system that haven't been addressed and probably should be.

That seems like a really, really dumb way to look at House elections, anyway.

Why? The whole point of the house is to REPRESENT, and while you have ~51% voting democrat you have (whatever number) less than 50% democratic representatives. Farked-up proportions means you aren't being "representative" anymore. It's the SENATE that is supposed to be like that.

I mean, I get that there's more to those numbers and that some drift and some inevitable gerrymandering even if you aren't trying to do it, but it seems like such a large disparity is a good illustration of how bad gerrymandering is right now.
