Saw this in C&D a while back. I don't get it.

While the Mustang is a capable car, a good chunk of its appeal would appear to be its styling cues linking it back to the 50's classic. Now it just looks like another Hyundai.

Butchering the Mustang design is tradition. Why does submitter hate tradition?

I think it's supposed to look like an Aston Martin.

And they're giving it a rear suspension system.

So it's not even a real Mustang.

Would it be that hard to think of a new name?

There is a definite resemblance but are those doors remotely practical?

It's almost like they have never even seen a 1956 fastback.

It is a neat looking car, I wouldn't mind owning one, but yeah, it really doesn't look like a Mustang

50's = 70's before coffee. Not sure how that happened.

OTOH, a GIS for 1950s mustang comes up with some fine looking cars

They could have kept a few styling cues with the new body... The three bar brake lights maybe, the pony on the grill running the wrong way, that type of thing.

It's a nice looking Toyota Celica.

It's not a pony car.

You hit the nail on the head. Part of the appeal of the Mustang is how it pays homage to the classic Mustang of the 60's.

As for this iteration, I like the car...just not as a Mustang.

It looks like a Hyundai raped an Infiniti.

From the picture, it looks like you can fill it up from either side. That would actually be a decent idea. It looks like it's going to have gigantic blind spots though.

No story. "Artists" idea from some vague rumors.

The good ol stang has been a parts bin car from the start, take what ya got, make it look nice, give it ok handling, and sell it.

about time they gave it independent rear.

I feel like I'm missing something here, like there's a meme be played out that I'm not aware of.

You're all commenting about a concept car. Not a real one. And if you'd read TFA you would be aware that it is completely contradictory with with following statements "Those that have seen the 2015 Mustang say it looks nearly identical to the Evos concept" the one in the pictures from the article and "Those in-the-know say the car new will keep its shark-nosed grille and round headlights. Only a idiot should think that gull wings on a volume market car is possible, they're way too expensive to build. A a quick look inside just screams concept.

The Weeners contains a more slightly more realistic idea of what it might look like, but again I doubt it looks this good.

You're forgetting the original Ford Model "D" Mustang. The one that "came in any color so long as it's black".

2012-11-11 02:32:26 PM
Looks like a concept version of a mere Fusion coupe. And as everyone else has said, absolutely no relation to a Mustang.

Only buy the even numbered models. Odd version numbers are not generally stable releases.

Mustang body styles tend to vacillate between "pretty cool" and "hideously ugly."

I mean, look at this mid-80's abomination:

"Now slightly more sporty than the Chevy Cavalier!"

When the Mustang came out in '64 1/2 it was a great concept car. Fair HP/Weight ratio. After the '66 it just became more and more bloated. Gave up on them after '70.
My last Mustang looked exactly like this one:

As someone who owned a 1966 Mustang fastback.....that thing makes me sad....I will echo that it looks like an Aston Martin that's all f*cked up.....

Looks a Transformer in mid-transformation...

Still, the concept care looks pretty cool... I can see a few styling cues hat echo various mustang years... but overall, it doesn't really scream "Mustang" to me. Give it a different name and it will sell better than if it's trying to fight a perceptual barrier to Mustang die-hards. Grand Torino?

2012-11-11 03:40:51 PM
First off, that article is from June and as others have said, that's the Evos concept.

Second of all, all of the other pictures are actually renderings of what the Mustang designers say they're doing with the car. Those renderings aren't even from Ford but people who take what Ford says, and interpret it.

Finally, this should calm people down. Motor Trend claims some spy shooters got a look at the actual 2015 Mustang:

Link, From November 7th

stwot.motortrend.com

If anything like the Evos actually get's produced, I would expect they'll spruce it up quite a bit and put the Lincoln badge on it.

I'll be 45 this month, so if I'm that much younger than you, you must be fairly old.

My girlfriend at the time had a light blue one, and, trust me, it was pure suck: Looked like crap, ran like crap.

All you have to do to sell Mustangs is run ads saying "Do you feel the need to cut people off in traffic at 80 mph because shaving 35 seconds off your commute is more important than the very lives of the other people on the road? Buy a Mustang!"

Every asshole in the world will buy one.

The article says it'll keep the shark grill and round headlights. Few of those design concepts will stay. Calm down

2012-11-11 03:44:51 PM

Looks fine to me, but when it comes to cars like the Mustang you're mostly talking about fogeys trying to recapture a fond period of their lives that never really existed so every little change completely outrages them for no real reason.

Recent spy shots have revealed that the next 'Stang will be ditching its archaic solid rear axle for a modern independent setup....

Welcome to about twenty years too late for me to care. And when you're talking about a car that doesn't start being remotely respectable until $35,000.... yea... no thanks. I'll buy a real car.

Not that I don't get the love for the Mustang. I had a GT when I was younger and it was great fun, but at the price they go for now and the other options available for the same price I have a hard time imagining why I'd buy it or any of the other pseudo-pony/muscle cars being sold these days.

baka-san: The mid 80's GT was THE bargain screamer for it's day.

It still looked like someone beat an Escort from the same era with an ugly stick.

And it was only a bargain screamer if you never actually intended to encounter curves of any kind. Fox bodies from the factory were sloppy death traps that might as well not have even had steering wheels in them until you dropped some coin on a decent suspension.

Plus they routinely got spanked by Buicks.

/ no pictures of the GNX pls, I will ruin the front of my pants from the excitement....

Dumbasses.
They completely ruined it all once before. It got a little better in the 90's, and then in 2004 they finally got it right. I guess we're going back into the retarded age of the Mustang.
