The funniest thing about that is, people actually believed it. It didn't take much in those days - you could scratch "Satan Lives" or "666" onto anything and a significant number of people would believe it was a sign of demon possession without once thinking that maybe it was you who did it.

At my Baptist high school, we had a kid who went on a bender and got out of the consequences by scratching 666 on his chest and claiming he had been abducted by Satanists. it was accepted without question.
